14th March 2023.
CERN Large Hadron Collider, Geneva, Switzerland.
"Hey Dante, did you fix the broken dipole magnets?" asked someone in a noisy hallway full of scientists wearing coats and engineers doing their work.
"Yes, I am about to go do just that."
CAUTION! LEVEL 1 ALERT ON OCTANT 3!
"Hey! Who is still inside the tube? The experiment is about to start. Tell him to come out."
"Dante! Come out after the repairs are done."
"Got it, sir."
If you are wondering, I am a lowly intern at the Large Hadron Collider, working on routine maintenance tasks and dreaming of uncovering the universe's secrets. I am currently doing my repairs and minor maintenance before the particle accelerator starts.
I am your everyday regular college student doing a summer internship. I have a loving family. My father has a good job, and my mother stays at home to take care of my little sibling.
As I entered the particle accelerator, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The immense machinery surrounding me was like nothing I had ever seen before.
The whirring sounds of the machines were both intimidating and soothing as if I was being welcomed into the heart of a giant living organism.
I made my way to the dipole magnets, which were responsible for creating the magnetic fields needed to steer the particles around the accelerator.
The magnets were delicate pieces of equipment and required constant monitoring and maintenance to ensure their proper function.
As I began my work, I could feel the excitement building within me. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work on the cutting edge of scientific discovery, and I was determined to make the most of it.
Suddenly, an alarm sounded, interrupting my thoughts. A voice came over the intercom, urgently instructing me to leave the tube as the experiment was about to start.
I quickly gathered my tools and made my way to the exit, but as I was about to leave, I realized I had forgotten something. I hurried back to retrieve it, hoping I wasn't too late.
As I raced back towards the exit, the lights began to flicker and then went out completely, plunging the tube into darkness. The sudden silence was jarring, and I felt a wave of panic wash over me.
I knew I had to find a safe place to hide until the experiment was over, and I frantically searched for somewhere to go. Finally, I found a small cavity where I could wait out the experiment.
As the particle accelerator began to whirr to life, I could feel the vibrations through the walls of the cavity. The sound was both deafening and hypnotic, and I found myself mesmerized by the rhythmic humming.
But then I realized my mistake. The instruments I had brought with me were not secured properly, and the increasing magnetic field of the collider was causing them to move and vibrate uncontrollably.
I watched in horror as the tools flew across the cavity and collided with the walls, creating a deafening metallic noise. And then, one of the instruments hit me directly in the leg, causing intense pain.
I knew I had to get out of there, but the exit was locked, and I was trapped. I could feel my body being thrown around by the force of the particles, and the temperature inside the tube was dropping rapidly.
I closed my eyes and braced myself for the worst, hoping against hope that someone would find me before it was too late.
I don't remember much of what happened next. There was a blinding flash of light, a sense of weightlessness, and then...nothing.
