The sea was a raging monster that night. Angry waves crested high as far as the eye could see, illuminated by the dull flicker of a half-moon peeking through the endless storm clouds. Lightning ripped the sky apart, while thunder bellowed deeply within the girl's chest. A lone ship sailed on these tumultuous waters, her fate hanging in the balance.
Rachael had been traveling for many weeks on this vessel, all alone. She was bound to a watery grave to whatever was in the sea.
The ship creaked and groaned against the tumultuous waves as the young girl clung tight to the mast, her hair whipping across her face. The storm raged on, unabated, tearing at the sails and sending the ship careening across the ocean.
She was all alone. Chained and abandoned in a ship, leaving her to fend for herself against the rage of the elements. She had tried to stay strong, to hold on to the hope that somehow, someone would come to her rescue. But as the storm grew worse and the waves rose higher and higher, that hope began to slip away.
For hours, she struggled against the chain that tethered her body to the ship, watching her fate unravel before her. The ocean continued its relentless onslaught, its cruel waves battering the ship until it finally succumbed. A monster wave slammed the vessel from the side, ripping it in two with a shuddering crunch.
And then, all at once, it was gone. The ship lurched wildly, her grip slipping from the metal chains that held her captive as the world spun around her.
All around, Rachael saw the sea swallowing the ship, dragging it down into the depths. The chaos only lasted a few seconds, but it seemed like a lifetime to the lonely woman. As the ship was sucked under the water, the girl held onto the wheel with white-knuckled determination.
In the next moment, everything went dark.
The girl surfaced, gasping for air. Her world had shrunk to a tiny circle of floating debris, the remnants of her ship. She clung onto a broken plank of wood and surveyed her surroundings. Ahead, the ocean stretched out to infinity, while dark, ominous clouds loomed overhead. The girl knew she was completely alone, lost in the middle of nowhere, with no help in sight.
The current was swift, and Rachael was quickly being carried away from the sight where the ship drowned. She kept her head above the water as best as she could, and she hoped that someone had seen her and would come to her rescue. But as the agonizing minutes went by, Rachael knew that her hope was futile.
The last of her energy was draining from her body. She was getting colder and colder as hypothermia set in. The sun had already blazed down at her still form as it slowly dissipated all of her strength.
For the first time in forever, she felt the full force of her loneliness. There was no one to share her sorrow or her fear, no one to comfort her, no one to hold her. The vast, empty ocean was a cruel reminder of her own heart, which felt just as vast and empty. She was trapped in a vicious cycle of pain and despair, with no way out.
As the hours ticked by, the girl felt her resolve beginning to slip away. The waves continued to buffet the wreckage, and she held on for dear life, afraid of letting go. The sea around her was teeming with life, but all she could focus on was the empty expanse of the ocean, the void that seemed to be swallowing her whole.
The girl's thoughts floated back to everything that had led her to this point: the heartache, the pain, and the losses that had brought her here. She tried to hold onto these memories, but they were slipping away, replaced by a growing sense of lethargy. Her mind was turning against her, making her forget everything that mattered, making her forget who she was.
Finally, after what felt like forever, the girl's luck ran out. The storm never abated, and the sea never calmed. One moment, the girl was clutching onto the wreckage, and the next, she was thrown off into the vicious waters. The currents pulled her down, down into the unforgiving depths.
And then, suddenly, there was nothing beneath her but the cold, merciless ocean.
She fought against the water, kicking and paddling as if her life depended on it - which, of course, it did. But the waves pulled her under, dragging her down into the depths of the ocean. She could feel her lungs screaming for air, her heart pounding in her chest as she struggled to keep her head above water.
It was then that she saw it - a creature, emerging from the dark depths of the ocean. It was massive, its eyes glowing like beacons as it swam steadily toward her. Its tail propelled it forward with strong velocity.
She immediately knew what creature was coming for her. Her mother told her stories about them when she was a child.
She tried to scream, but the water choked her, filling her mouth and throat until all she could taste or smell was the salty brine of the ocean.
And then, it was upon her. The creature caught her with its massive jaws, dragging her under the surface and into the darkness below. She struggled, fighting with every fiber of her being, but it was no use - the creature was too strong.
The creature had captured her, his scaly hand gripping tightly to her ankle.
The creature was tall and muscular, with piercing green eyes that seemed to look through her soul. Rachael tried to struggle, but he was too strong, dragging her deeper into the water. Finally, he let go of her ankle and wrapped an arm around her waist, holding her tight against his chest.
As she plummeted deeper into the water, speedily by the creature who dragged her along, the girl realized that all the sorrows she had been carrying for so long no longer mattered. All the pain, all the loss, and all the heartache were drowned out by the sound of the sea.
And then, everything went black.
The monsters beneath the waves had claimed another victim. Rachael was taken captive by the vicious sea.
