"Yes, you do! If you have a Warden Device, you have a weapon that you can summon with it! That is the whole point of it!" Brice laughed loudly, and I winced, looking back at the dragon, but it was walking into a tree like it was stuck in a glitch in a game. Just what in the heavenly eggrolls is going on here? Was I inside some sort of game?"
"What is wrong with that thing?" I asked, and then pointed at it, not bothering to lower my voice this time. "Why doesn't it notice us or hear us?"
"We are outside of its agro bubble, so it can't sense us. Once we get closer, then the real fight begins! As for why it is walking into the tree, your guess is as good as mine. Some of the lower lever monsters are pretty stupid," Brice explained, and I sighed.
"Then how do I use the Warden Device?" I asked, and Brice grinned.
"This is the best part! Check it out; I will show you how it is done!" Brice laughed and then backed up from me, pulling out his Warden Device.
Brice started doing this ridiculous dance, and I watched in complete disbelief. The only thing going through my mind was, why did he pick me? But then I watched him burst like some 90s anime character, and a fancy bodysuit and sword appeared in his hand.
I had no idea how this was supposed to help me, but at least I would look more presentable for a fight than in a suit. I pulled out my Warden Device and followed Brice's moves, and soon enough, a body suit and a sword of my own appeared. The blade had a strange blue glow, and it felt colder than the air around me.
I looked at Brice with surprise, and he just grinned back. "Pretty cool, right? Now we can take on this monster!" He said enthusiastically and moved closer to the creature.
The dragon noticed us at about thirty feet and whipped its head around, and let out an ear-piercing screech before charging forward. We charged forward too, and I attacked first, slashing with my blade and missing. It felt like I was playing a video game, but for real.
Brice came in right behind me and lept up, driving his sword into the dragon's back. It screamed out in pain as it writhed around, trying to shake us off. I quickly rolled away as Brice drove his blade further in, slicing through the dragon's thick scales and causing it immense pain. It looked like he had it, but the creature suddenly screeched and hurled him off, taking his sword with him.
Then the dragon turned to face me.
"Oh, fuck," I muttered under my breath and looked at the sword in my hand. I had no clue how to use this damn thing, and I was supposed to be killing that... nice guy! Dammit! He was actually pretty nice!
I took a deep breath and steeled myself, knowing that the only way I was getting out of this alive was to fight. I ran forward, slashing wildly at the monster as it tried to dodge my blade. It managed to avoid most of my hits, but then I suddenly moved in close and drove the sword into its neck.
The dragon roared in pain and stumbled back, crashing down onto the ground. I prepared for a final strike when suddenly, it stopped moving. Brice ran over to me, his face alight with excitement.
"Halberd! You did it! You killed it!" He said, and then punched me in the shoulder. "Now that you know how to use your weapon, you can become a great hunter! Let's head home and start planning our next mission."
He was kidding me, right? I don't think that swinging my words around wildly would be considered any kind of technique, but killing the creature made me feel different. I couldn't really put my finger on it because it was a complicated feeling. It was like feeling a sense of improvement, but throughout my entire body.
"A hunter? I saw myself there, right? My sword skills are not really skills," I said, but Brice shook his head and then pointed at the dead dragon.
"It's dead, and we are not. That, to me, says that you could become something if you really want! I think that we would make a good team, but we should get the loot from this and then head back. We will get a good bit of Mana from this, so we can get something to eat! I got a place where you can crash as well since you have no memories. That is, if you want, not trying to be pushy. You just look like you could use a bit of help."
Why was he so freaking nice?! Gah! How the hell was I supposed to kill someone like this? The guy was helping me out, and I was plotting his death. What the hell was wrong with me? No! It wasn't me, It was Jim! This was all his fault!
I had been living a fairly horrible life with little chance for success, but all my bad luck and failures were my own for the most part. Now I was just some interdimensional douchebag out to ruin good people's lives! This was some bullshit!
"Halberd? Are you okay?" He asked, and then looked at the monster, pulling me from my thoughts. "You look like you have an existential crisis," Brice chuckled, patting my shoulder. "I remember the first time that I killed a monster..."
Brice started to rattle on, and I just let out a long sigh. While he was a nice guy, the man was completely clueless. It was still ridiculous that I had to kill this guy. Jim had told me that I was going to have to kill good-looking younger people, but being here with the target right in front of me was a completely different thing from just talking about it.
"I am just trying to get my bearings together. My mind is slowly starting to clear up, and I think I know why I came here now," I said, and then looked down at myself. "How do I get this silly thing off me?"
