Kya and Elara left alone, leaving Fiona with the guards and me, but I was uneasy. Even knowing that Kya would be able to get back into her wolf form within a few hours, I was racked with questions that I couldn't find answers to.
"My King. I think that we should deal with the final problem that we came here for. It was the main reason, after all," Fiona said as we stood at the edge of Keth Rock.
"Aye, but I was waiting for you to give me your plan. You already know what I want to do with the person. I would make them come forward or start killing people until they did," I said, looking at my hand that one of my muscles had ripped out of and was nodding along with me. "But, This is why I keep you so near and why you are not back at the castle."
"I am honored that you think so highly of me, my King. I do have a plan, but it is going to require you to keep calm. I know that you always want to resort to violence, but you also know that you have to change," Fiona explained, and the muscle hissed, but I pulled it back into my hand and looked at her.
"Yes, as much as the rest of me dislikes this new path," I said, looking at the village that was still in tears. I turned my head to the guards and then pointed to the town. "Help them fix the place back up. Fiona and I are going for a walk."
The guards nodded, making their way into the village to assist with repairs. As they departed, I glanced at Fiona, my expression a mixture of determination and apprehension.
"Alright, let's hear this plan of yours," I said, folding my arms across my chest.
Fiona took a deep breath before beginning. "We need to gather the villagers together for a public meeting. Explain to them that we've dealt with the immediate threats and are now focused on finding the root cause of these issues – someone who wishes harm upon both humans and monsters."
I nodded slowly, understanding her strategy. By addressing the people directly, we might be able to gain more insight, find clues, or even encourage the culprit to show themselves. Furthermore, demonstrating our commitment to resolving their problems could help build trust with the villagers.
"But how can you guarantee that our traitors will reveal themselves?" I asked, raising an eyebrow in skepticism.
"We cannot make such guarantees, but by setting the stage and applying pressure publicly, there's a possibility that they may slip up or act rashly," Fiona explained. "At the very least, it may buy us enough time to continue our investigation and narrow down suspects."
"Would it not be better to just explain clearly what we want? One of them attacked the guard that was sent here. That person needs to pay for that, and that is what I need you to figure out. How does one pay for this crime? Besides taking his life?" I asked plainly.
Fiona considered my words carefully before replying. "We could demand a form of reparations from the guilty party, either in the form of manual labor to help rebuild and fortify Keth Rock or by having them contribute resources or skills to aid Havencrest and the surrounding settlements. This way, they would be given a chance to atone for their crimes while also benefiting our kingdom."
"What if the person is unwilling to come forward? What if we cannot find out who truly attacked our guard?" I questioned, concerned about the potential complications of this plan.
"If no one comes forward or can be identified as the perpetrator, then it may be necessary to impose a more generalized penalty upon the village," Fiona suggested. "This might take the form of an increased tax or work levy, with the understanding that these measures are intended to offset the harm caused by their actions."
"This route risks alienating the villagers further, but it's essential to demonstrate that such behavior will not go unpunished. Additionally, imposing some form of justice might encourage someone with knowledge of the situation to step forward and assist us in identifying the true culprit," she continued.
I mulled over her proposal, weighing the pros and cons. I knew that diplomacy was necessary, but finding the right balance between fairness and accountability was proving challenging.
"Alright, let's proceed with this plan," I agreed reluctantly. "Gather the villagers together and lay out our intentions clearly. We'll see how they react and adjust accordingly based on their response. Remember, though, our primary goal is to uncover any hidden threats and protect the fragile peace we've established so far."
Fiona nodded solemnly, understanding the gravity of our task. Together, we made our way back into Keth Rock, prepared to confront the villagers and face whatever other challenges might arise – all while keeping a wary eye out for the machinations of the mysterious adversary pulling strings behind the scenes.
As Fiona and I stood before the gathered villagers, I couldn't help but notice the apprehension in their eyes. They had already been through so much, and now we were demanding that they face some hard truths.
Fiona spoke on behalf of us both, her voice calm yet assertive. "We have come here not only to address the immediate threats to your village but also to uncover the root causes. We now believe there is someone among you who has harmed one of our guards and may be working against the peace between humans and monsters."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd as faces filled with shock, confusion, and even anger. It was clear that many were struggling to accept this possibility.
"We know that these are difficult times," Fiona continued, "but if we are to build a future together, then we must address any injustices that have arisen from these conflicts. Whoever attacked our guard must make reparations, either by aiding in the reconstruction of your village, assisting Havencrest, or offering other resources or skills to aid our kingdom."
The villagers began talking amongst themselves, uncertainty hanging heavy in the air. Eventually, an older woman stepped forward, her gaze meeting ours with determination.
"I will speak for my people," she said firmly. "We understand the need for justice and accountability. But it's important to remember that not everyone here shares the same ideas or beliefs. If you can find the person responsible for this crime, then they alone should bear the price – not all of us."
I nodded in agreement, appreciating her wisdom and courage. "That is fair. Our goal is to bring forth the guilty party and ensure they atone for their actions without punishing those who are innocent. Thank you for your willingness to cooperate."
With newfound resolve, Fiona and I began the process of questioning the villagers and searching for clues that might lead us to the attacker. Unbeknownst to us, however, dark forces were still at work – and our mysterious enemy was orchestrating events to further complicate matters.
As we continued unraveling the web of deceit that surrounded Keth Rock, it became increasingly clear that someone was always one step ahead. Obstacles and setbacks plagued us at every turn, pushing both humans and monsters closer to the breaking point.
Even as I fought against frustration and anger, I knew that giving up was not an option. We had come too far and sacrificed too much to allow this unseen enemy to tear apart everything we'd built. And so, with my trusted companions by my side, I vowed to uncover the identity of this traitor and bring them to justice – no matter what the cost might be.
