"Remember that you also need to remain calm," Fiona said as I helped her down after Elara.
Kya had stayed in her weapon form as the blue glass scimitar attached to my belt the entire trip. I had asked her many times if she wanted to come out until she said she wasn't comfortable around the men, so I relented after that.
"Aye, I know, but I can already tell that this is going to be a trying visit," I said as I turned to look at the village.
The place was in shambles, and if there weren't people starting to gather, I would have said this place was probably deserted. It also looked like much of the damage was caused by monsters. Also, another strike against me, and I was more than sure this would be blamed on me.
As we began to make our way through the village, wary eyes followed us closely. The air was thick with tension as both humans and monsters under my guard stood side by side. My heart pounded in my chest, but I kept a resolute expression on my face.
A man stepped forward from the apprehensive crowd, appearing to be their leader or spokesperson. He eyed us warily, his gaze lingering on each member of our group before settling on me. "Why have you come here?" he asked gruffly, his voice full of suspicion.
I cleared my throat, mustering as much diplomacy as I could. "We've come to seek peaceful negotiations between your settlement and our kingdom in Havencrest. We believe that cooperation and trade can benefit both human and monster populations."
The man scoffed, crossing his arms as he sized us up. "Our people have suffered at the hands of monsters for too long. What makes you think we would ever trust you?"
Fiona stepped forward, her tone calm yet assertive. "Attacks from monsters are unfortunate, but many times it is due to misunderstandings or fear. Our goal is not to cause harm but rather to work together to build a brighter future for all. Together, we can overcome the trials that life throws at us."
For a moment, the man seemed to consider Fiona's words - but then his expression darkened once more. "It's difficult to see how any peaceful coexistence is possible when it was one of your kind who destroyed our crops and left us to starve," he spat bitterly, gesturing to the barren fields around Keth Rock.
I frowned, surprised by this revelation. Certainly, some monsters would attack human settlements out of hunger or malice, but I had no knowledge of any such incidents involving those under my rule.
"Please understand that we were unaware of your suffering," I said sincerely, keeping my voice steady. "We do not condone such actions, and if one of our own is responsible, we will ensure that they face justice."
Silence hung in the air as the man studied us, his expression unreadable. After what felt like an eternity, he finally spoke again. "Very well. We'll give you a chance to prove yourselves, but know this: if any harm comes to our people, there will be no more talk of peace."
And with those loaded words, we were granted entry into Keth Rock to begin the difficult task of building fragile bridges between humans and monsters. Little did we know that there was still much strife and hardship ahead of us - and some unexpected surprises that would put our resolve to the test.
"Can you tell me about the monsters that have been attacking you? Are the ones that attacked the fields the same that attacked the village?" Elara asked, her eyes turning black. This made the woman she was asking step back in fear, but that only made Zulu, now in control, cross her arms. "I am not here to hurt you. I only need to know what they are and if there are one or two kinds attacking you."
The woman hesitated, her eyes darting to the other villagers for reassurance before she finally spoke. "There are two different types of monsters that have been attacking us. One kind is large and lumbering, with thick scales covering its body. It was this monster that destroyed our crops," she explained, a hint of fear creeping into her voice.
"The other type is smaller but just as deadly - they move quickly and strike without warning. They've attacked several of our people in the past few months, leaving many injured or worse."
Elara nodded thoughtfully, her black eyes betraying no emotion. "Thank you for sharing this information. We will do what we can to investigate these incidents and prevent future attacks. Our goal is to work together with your people, not against them."
The villagers murmured amongst themselves, skepticism still evident on their faces. However, there was also a glimmer of hope in some of their eyes – hope that perhaps the change was possible and peace could be achieved.
"Very good, but it would not hurt for you to smile," Fiona said as we continued on through the village. We had talked to a few people now, and it seemed that the village only had one problem. The Large creature eating their crops was most likely a Ghurthar, a massive herbivorous beast known for its voracious appetite but generally peaceful nature. However, when hungry or threatened, they could become destructive.
As for the smaller attackers, it was difficult to pinpoint exactly what kind of monster they could be, as the descriptions we gathered were vague and inconsistent. It seemed that fear had clouded their recollection of events, but it was clear that these creatures posed a threat, and the villagers lived in constant fear of their next attack.
In an effort to address these issues, we decided that our first course of action would be to attempt to find and communicate with the large Ghurthar, hoping to redirect it away from the village's crops. For this task, I asked Fiona and Kya to assist me since their knowledge of monsters and tactics might prove valuable.
"We'll approach the creature cautiously," I instructed, "making sure not to startle or provoke it. If we can calmly explain the situation to the Ghurthar, there's a chance it may leave the crops alone. These creatures are not violent unless provoked, so I suspect something has driven it here."
They nodded in agreement, understanding the importance of such a delicate interaction. Meanwhile, Elara and the guards would continue investigating the smaller, more aggressive monsters that had been attacking the villagers. With her unique ability to communicate with other creatures, Elara was well-suited to this task.
As we split up and embarked on our individual missions, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that whispered in the back of my mind. The situation felt like a complex puzzle with pieces missing or deliberately hidden from view. Still, for the sake of Havencrest and the future we were trying to build, it was crucial that we untangle this web of fear and mistrust between humans and monsters.
Over time, through patience, diplomacy, and understanding, we gradually made progress in Keth Rock. We managed to locate and redirect the Ghurthar, which had apparently wandered into their territory due to scarcity of food in its usual habitat. In exchange for leaving the village unharmed, we offered to help find a new, more suitable area for the creature to settle.
Meanwhile, Elara and her team uncovered evidence suggesting that the aggressive smaller monsters may have been coerced into attacking the village by an unknown party. This disturbing revelation led us to suspect that someone – or something – wanted to sabotage any potential peace between humans and monsters.
