Chapter 5 - Chapter 6: Navigating uncharted terrority continues

Oct. 16th (Monday)

After I got finished getting dressed, I quickly sent Jake a text that I thought it was best if I drove myself to school. It took him a little bit to text back and all he texted back was okay. I just put my hair in a ponytail for school and when I went to grab my black jacket before leaving the house, I saw it wasn't there then I remembered I probably forgot it in Jake's truck due to what happened when we got back Saturday night. I was surprised Lena or Courtney wasn't waiting on me when I got to school. It was cold outside and I tried to walk fast towards where I knew Jake and them would be at. When Harrison saw me, he cleared his throat really loudly then Jake, Lewis, and Keith looked to see me. Jake quickly got up leaving behind two coffee cups that was on the table in front of him and walked towards me.

"Why aren't you wearing a jacket?" He asked shaking his head at me.

"It's in your truck." I said as I stopped in front of him.

"Huh, I didn't notice. Here take my jacket. I'm wearing a thermal undershirt so don't you dare say no Abby." He said before taking off his dark blue jacket with the high school mascot on it since it was a baseball jacket then he held it out towards me.

I took off my backpack and he grabbed it before I could put it on the ground then I took the jacket. I put it on and immediately smelled his Versace Eros cologne with the mint leaves being the strongest scent. He didn't hand my backpack back to me instead he turned and walked towards the table. I shook my head before following him. The jacket was really big on me and I put my hands in the pockets to warm up my hands.

"The coffee is still hot; it should help warm up your hands." He said after I sat down beside him and putting one of the cups of coffee in front of me.

I didn't say anything, I just grabbed the cup of coffee and he was right the cup was still hot. I drunk some of the coffee to see it was White Chocolate Mocha Caramel.

"You guys seen Lena or Courtney yet?" I asked after drinking a little bit more of the coffee.

"No, not yet." Lewis said and I nodded my head.

"Courtney seemed to have a great time with Hank at the dance." Keith said as I felt something touch my right hip.

I jumped a little bit because I wasn't expecting it then I saw Jake put his right arm back by his side which made me put together what happened.

"I'm…" I started to say.

"It's fine." He said without looking at me then drinking some of his coffee.

Keith and them looked at us as Jake kept drinking his coffee.

When Lena and Courtney finally showed up, they gave Jake and me a look. I shook my head then they looked away. When the bell rung to go to first period, I got up and grabbed my backpack before grabbing the cup of coffee since I wasn't done with it. Jake walked away without waiting on me even though our first classes aren't that far from each other.

"Girl what happened?" Courtney asked as we walked towards our first class.

"I didn't know he put his arm around my waist, I felt something touch my right hip and I jumped/ flinched whatever you want to call it." I said and she nodded her head.

"And the jacket?" She asked pulling on the sleeve of Jake's jacket.

"Mine is in his truck; I forgot it was there until this morning when I was getting ready to leave for school. He had wanted to pick me up but my dad is still in one of his moods over us dating so I texted Jake that I thought it would be best for me to drive myself to school so I showed up here without a jacket. He gave me his jacket and told me I couldn't turn it down because he was wearing a thermal undershirt." I said and she nodded her head.

"Dating; so you agree you two are dating and a couple?" She asked smiling really big.

"I guess so." I said as we made it to our first class.

"There's no guessing about it Abby. It's either yes or no." She said as we sat down in our seats and she turned around to face me.

"How was your date with Hank?" I asked.

"No comment." She said before turning back around and I laughed.

"You'll tell me sooner or later." I said then she laughed.

Lunch

I was in the line to get food and almost to the front of the line when I saw Brooke and them talking to Jake and them. I got my food then got something to drink before heading over that way. I saw Jen had her hand on the table very close to Jake's right hand but Jake was giving her a look that said try it and see what happens.

"Well as I was saying, party at my house this weekend all of you are invited." Jen said really loudly and making sure to touch Jake's hand as I put my food down beside Harrison then I sat down.

"The answer is no; I already told you that and don't touch me again." Jake said yanking his hand away from her.

"Oh hey, Abigail I didn't see you there. I guess you can come too as a plus one." Jen said smiling at me then she walked away.

Brooke and them followed Jen after that. I just looked at my food then opened my drink. I didn't even have to look up after I felt Harrison get up to know what was happening. Not long after I felt Harrison get up, Jake sat down beside me on my right side and sitting close enough his left leg was touching my right leg.

"I was not flirting with her." Jake whispered in my right ear.

I was happy I was wearing a jacket after that because I felt myself get goose bumps after feeling his breath on my skin and how close he was to me.

I grabbed my hamburger and ate some of it.

"I know." I whispered after I swallowed and I saw him smile.

"Besides it was a stupid pool party; a pool party in October. Is she crazy?" Keith asked.

"You have met her right?" I asked giving him a look then all of them laughed.

Lena and Courtney showed up after that. The conversation quickly turned to what Jake and I missed since we left the dance early. Halfway through Lena talking about some crazy dance move Chance did, I felt something touch my left hip. This time I didn't jump or flinch. I looked down to see Jake's hand and knew he had his arm around me. When he saw I didn't jump or flinch, He moved a little closer and tightened his grip a little bit.

After-school

Courtney and I were walking away from the practice baseball field (since the baseball team was practicing on the regular baseball field during 7th period/ we usually switch up each week) and I was barely listening to what she was saying because she was going on and on about how Haley (a senior and more than likely going to be our captain this year) shouldn't be captain etc.

"What is up girls?" Keith asked then I looked to see Jake and them leaning against Harrison's truck.

"Aw, did you guys stay to see the real athletes instead of you wannabes?" She asked because she is always joking with them that softball players are the real deal and baseball players are not.

"Keep living in that fantasy world Courtney." Jake said giving her a look then looking at me and Courtney shook her head.

"That's it; he doesn't deserve you Abby and shouldn't be your boyfriend." Courtney said looking at me then Harrison choked a little bit on the water he had just drunk.

"Later; I'll see you tomorrow." I said shaking my head at her then hugging her.

I walked towards my car after that and I knew Jake was following when I heard footsteps behind me.

"Did you get my jacket out of your truck?" I asked without looking back at him as I unlocked the car.

"I knew there was something I was forgetting about; oh well, guess you are just going to have to keep my jacket." He said as I made it to the car.

I turned around to look at him after that and he smiled at me.

"You know I need my jacket. I can't keep leaving it in your truck." I said.

"Well you can grab it after we get finished studying together at my house." He said still smiling.

"Jake." I said then he stopped smiling.

"Abby." He said.

"Maybe we should kind of keep our contact outside of school to a minimum until my dad can get his head wrapped around this." I said.

"If you want space just say so Abby don't use your dad as an excuse." He said in a mad voice.

"You know what forget it. I'll go get your jacket and I'll see you tomorrow." He said before turning around and walking away.

When he came back with my jacket, he didn't say anything to me. He just held it out towards me and after I took it from him, he turned around and walked away before I could say anything.

There was a lot of tension at supper and I knew it was because mom kept asking questions about how my school day was and how Jake was and my dad didn't want to know how Jake was or how my school day was if it involved Jake. I did a little bit of homework before going to take a shower. After I finished my homework, I sat on my bed with my back against the headboard before grabbing my cell phone.

Hey. – Me

Hey. – Jake

Did you get your studying done? – Me

Most of it and don't worry I won't ask to be able to pick you up for school tomorrow. – Jake

Jake. – Me

Abby, I get your dad hates this new direction but do we have to let it come between us? I liked how we were at school. – Jake

What are we? – Me

Are we friends, friends with benefits, boyfriend or girlfriend, or something else? – Me

I'm not talking about this over the phone. Can I come over? – Jake

It can wait until tomorrow. You can pick me up for school. – Me

You sure? You aren't going to back out of it at the last minute like you did today. – Jake

Yes, I'm sure. – Me

Ok. I'll see you in the morning and we'll talk then. – Jake

Ok. Goodnight, Jake. – Me

Goodnight, Abby. – Jake
