Chapter 1 - The Engagement Trope.

"Shit."

In the Lin Family Manor, a youth suddenly cursed out. A girl of about 25 next to him, dressed in a black formal suit, wearing an earpiece and a pair of black glasses, most likely the youth's bodyguard, looked over warily.

"Young master, is there a problem? Do you require something?"

"Ah! No, nothing, Xue. I just remembered something unpleasant. I don't need anything... well, just give me a gun. I feel like I might need one."

Even though Leng Xue was a little confused, her job was to obey orders, so she did what she was told and handed over a gun to the young man. Why was a gun so easily passed around in mainland China? Well, money, connections, and, most importantly, novel world. Don't think about it.

"Young Master Lin, although I don't need to remind you, please be careful. After all, today is a big day."

"Well, thank you, Xue. You should be a little more careful than usual today. I have a really bad feeling... haha."

With that, the youth put away the gun in his coat's inner pocket and stopped talking. A serious look appeared on his face, and if you looked carefully, you would notice a slight trembling in his hands and a slight twitch on the edge of his lips.

'Seems like this is real. I, Lin Biao, have really been transmigrated, and that too in a f***ing novel world. Shit, and that too as a villain, Shit.'

Yes, the obvious big reveal: this youth is none other than our main character, Lin Biao, who has just been transmigrated into a novel world. Although getting isekaid was a dream come true for anyone familiar with anime culture, not many would want to get transmigrated into a villain's body in a Chinese cultivation or martial arts novel, be it a city or xianxia world. It would have been fine even if he was a Japanese villain. Why, you ask? Because those protagonists are generally soft-hearted, kind, passionate... okay, immature and indecisive and not killers. But here, even if the villain's eighth cousin's dog is spared, it is considered not going overboard. Well, it seems things are not completely out of hand yet.

'I think I can still be saved. Currently, I have not met the protagonist, nor have I done anything evil (well, gambling, drinking, and playing around with... ahem, girls don't count, maybe...?) since I, or rather this body, never forced anyone, and these behaviors were also from three years back. Being a licking dog may have saved me. Also, the heroine, besides me, Leng Xue, I don't need to worry about her. She was in my team till the endgame.'

{Well, what do you expect? A beautiful female bodyguard in a Chinese webnovel. What is she if not a top assassin and a heroine? More on her later.}

Here it is, expect the expected. You read that right. He is a low-grade simp of a villain who, for the last three years, has chased a single heroine, and that heroine doesn't even bother to look his way. This was a good thing for the current Lin Biao, as due to this personality, most of his bad habits have come to a stop. He has never entered a bar in these years, started working out and studying, takes part actively and effectively in the family's and his own company's business. The only downside is that he is too passionate, or rather, a creep. As a result, he earned the heroine's disgust, which will only elevate today.

"Today's important event is, after all, my grandfather's (Lin Family's current head) birthday and also the announcement of the engagement between the Lin and Yan Family. It is between Lin Biao, aka me, the villain, and Yan Wen, aka the heroine."

Yan Wen represents someone who possesses both physical beauty and a gentle, refined demeanor. She is one of the main heroines of the novel, super talented, insanely talented, currently 26, and is the CEO and founder of a billion yuan company. From establishment to its glory, this company never once received any help from the main Yan family due to the stubbornness of the heroine. As a member of such a prestigious family, she was certainly aware that one of the most important life choices of hers was not hers alone. As a result, she wanted to build something that is glorious and totally hers. Though dissatisfied, she never once showed it until Lin Biao became her main suitor. She would rather die than associate with him, but his family was on par, if not stronger than hers, and this was just a branch. The main family was among the top existences in the whole of China, if not the world. They have influence not only in business but also in military and government.

The only light was that the man in question was obsessed with her and would not do anything to displease her. But this engagement was decided by her family, so if she backed out, what she would face is not a broken-hearted man, but a giant Lin family that would swallow the Yans whole.

Even in such a desperate situation, she does not hate Lin Biao. Yeah, true, she does not like him and ignores him because she has already refused him a million times (even the current protagonist does not know this). Staying true to her name, a beauty with a gentle heart, she cares for all, and being smart, she knows you can't choose to fall in love with someone; it just happens. Sometimes instantly, sometimes a catalyst is required, but mostly it's not your choice. But she can't just love someone like that. Talent aside, a man with non-existent pride, no ego, no self-respect, and no drive, motivation, or goal not even a desire to explore is really not worthy of her love.

'According to the plot, Wen will be about to reach here, and with her would be the protagonist as a bodyguard. After the announcement, the classic line 'I OBJECT' or 'WHO DARES' would be heard, and then the rest, everyone knows. One guard, two guards, then eventually, he will beat everyone and take her out safely. Well, by the way, he will also send me into a coma. Sigh... This will be the start of the novel 'Dragon King Returns to the City,' a story about a mercenary king who, after spending 8 years in the Middle East in blood and battle, returns to his country tired from all that and chooses to retire and pick up girls along the story. A story full of face slaps and satisfactory kills.'

While thinking all this and his future steps, he feels a hand on his shoulder. A chill runs down his spine, and his body immediately goes into survival mode, ready to run. Though, after hearing the voice, he calms down.

"Young master, are you alright?"

"As I said, I am fine. Why do you ask, Xue?" 'It seems I am too tense. Relax, take a deep breath. Huh... When was I this afraid of anyone (even in the previous life)? It seems to be the effect of this body. Well, now that I have calmed down, I feel more collected.'

"Well, you have been pinching your head for the last 5 minutes, so I thought maybe..."

"Actually, you are right. I certainly am not okay, but now I have calmed down. Thank you, and I will let you know if I need anything." Saying that, he smiled a little at her, which made her blush. You can't really blame her. This is the first time he smiled at her throughout her one-year service besides him.

'He really isn't right. What's with that smile all of a sudden... Not that I hate it,' Xue thought a little embarrassedly.

While all this was happening, there was a commotion all of a sudden:

"Oh, is that the Yan family? Even they are here."

"Of course, even they have to give face to the giants like the Lin family."

"See, there she is, the number one beauty of our city, Miss Yan Wen."

"What are you getting excited for? She is just a human, not a fairy after all."

"Oh, so why do I see the camera on the phone open?"

"... This... This is just because my brother is a fan, yes, my brother."

"Brother, brother, I understand." With that, everyone laughed.

The stars of the attention, the Yans, just entered the manor. They had a small talk between them, then most of them went to the 1st floor, most likely to greet old Lin. Just Miss Yan and her two guards were here, one a normal standard bodyguard, the other a man of around 26 with disheveled hair, a casual outfit, and a lazy demeanor. A sharp contrast to his counterpart, a professionally dressed and alert bodyguard.

"Well, here they come, the pearl of every reader's eye and the Dragon King. Xue, come with me, let's greet the guests."

'I have to say, the female leads of these novels certainly have otherworldly appearances (well, they are from a different world). Even regular people are more pleasing to the eye. BUT DOES IT MATTER?? Hmm, why did I think that in caps lock? Well, let's not think about it.'

"Yes, young master." 'This girl is here again. Oh, master, when will you give up on her? Sigh... a pity.'

They both traveled to greet them. Being the grandchild of the host, it is kind of his duty to greet any guest, which he, of course, will do.

"Good evening, Miss Yan. I hope there was not any problem reaching here. How are you?" With that, Biao ended the greeting with a slight nod. 'A perfectly normal greeting. Did I do it right?'

'Wrong. Something's not right.' This thought flashed in both of the heroines' minds at the same time. A normal greeting to Miss Yan? Don't joke with me. Normally, it would be something like, 'The love of my life, I am so thankful just to see you again.' Yeah, the kind of line that would drive anyone crazy.

Though shocked, Miss Yan politely greeted back, "I am fine. Good evening to you too, and a happy birthday to your grandfather."

"Well, thank you, but he would be happier to hear it directly from you. Hahha."

'How the hell is he holding a normal conversation?' is what both Xue and Wen thought.

"Well, never mind that. Who would it be here with you, Miss Yan? A guest of yours. Why don't you introduce him?"With that, Lin Biao faced the disheveled hair boy, aka the Dragon King.

"Yeah, sure. He is my new bodyguard, Ye Chen. I hired him today. Though young, he is highly skilled." While she was introducing him, Lin Biao made a sign with his hand behind his back.

"Oh, is that so? What was that saying again? Heroes come from the young generation. Hi, Mr. Ye, you can call me Young Master Lin." Saying that, he smiled towards the protagonist, Ye Chen, not extending his hand. Being polite towards him from the start, yet declaring the dynamic between their relationship, taking control of the conversation, not giving him a chance to speak or do anything that would put them on equal standing. Because then, using that, it would be a lot easier for Ye Chen to do certain things, like talk frankly with not just him but all the people here, and maybe establishing certain relations. You think this is a bit overboard? No, this was a novel world, though currently real, but certain things would not change.

But certainly, just one sentence would not keep him down. Even Miss Yan would defend him. Then, while riding with the momentum, he, too, would claim to not be just a bodyguard but a friend, thus lifting his status. And as expected, here she comes:

"Wait, brother Lin, Ye Chen is not just a bo..."

"Yes, Young Master Lin," spoke Ye Chen through gritted teeth.

Before Miss Yan could explain that she treats him as a friend, Ye Chen replied first, surprising not just Miss Yan, but also Xue, as being a top assassin, she knows him, so seeing him yield is a bigger surprise than of Miss Yan, who is just somewhat familiar with his attitude.

'He really is the Dragon King, but I think I can handle it. After all, I am not just a nobody in both my lives.'

END.
