I quickly hid my phone behind the bed after Souline hung up. Another yawn escaped me as I lay down and switched off the lamp. Souline's question lingered in my mind, and I thought about it for a moment. "Do you like him?" How could I? I'm only here to finish what I started and then head back to Ontario. I don't want to be in Rome any longer, no matter how well they're treating me. Ontario, not Rome, will always be my home.
There was something off about Souline too. Her voice sounded shaky, almost like she was worried about something. Maybe I'm just overthinking it; fatigue might've made her sound different during our call. I took a deep breath and rubbed my temples, but sleep still wouldn't come. I needed something—water, milk, anything—to help me fall asleep. I can't afford to show up to work with dark circles.
