The Kenyan government has come up with many policies and plans to help eradicate this problem. In Mathare however, there is lack of such social amenities and industries set up by the government. For example, the nearest police station is miles away and so is the nearest hospital that specializes in such cases related to gender based violence.
The lack of social amenities in itself is a fuel to domestic violence. In Mathare, there are many drug dealers and numerous places that sell illegal liquor and the perpetrators often have easy access to these types of facilities, the victims are then left vulnerable to such attacks.
The police have not helped at all as those that patrol such areas receive bribes and sometimes even the cases that are reported to them do not see the light of day. This type of behavior from those that should protect us has made the victims unable to report such cases whenever they occur because no help will be provided when they seek it.
