Chapter 12 - Weekend Off

*

After Liam paid at the front desk, we exited the restaurant and thankfully Walter was already parked in front waiting for us, I was about to get the door for Liam but he raised a hand to stop me and instead opened the door and gestured that I get in instead.

Without question, I got into the back seat, Walter got the door for Liam at the other side and after that, we drove back to the office in silence. It had been twenty minutes since we left the restaurant and Liam still hadn't said a word about the incident, did I perhaps cost him an important contract?

What have you done Cyra? You shouldn't have gotten involved, now look where you've gotten yourself, I thought to myself. We drove back to the office in silence, I couldn't even dare to breathe but surely that was impossible.

Walter dropped us off in front of the office before driving away, I followed Liam as we walked back into the office, we took the elevator and got back to our floor, still not a word.

"Tell Gomez to come in," Liam said immediately after we got into his office.

I on the other hand jumped when I heard his voice, but did what he said nonetheless. A few minutes later Gomez walked into the office.

"I hope you had a good lunch because those Hawaiian sponsors have a lot of ideas they want to pitch at you. Imagine, a Hawaiian-themed park at the back of our resorts? Ha!" Gomez said not minding me.

"Cyra, send me a copy of the edited contract with OVA and drop a printed copy on Gomez's table," Liam said completely ignoring Gomez as well.

"Contract?" Gomez asked looking at me like I had just caused some kind of trouble.

"Yes sir," I said doing as he said leaving the office to the both of them. I wondered what they were going to talk about.

I did as I was told but I was too afraid to go back to the office, so I went to the back room, as I called it now. After spending a little over 30 minutes, I got a text from Gomez saying I needed to go over some sorted papers Liam had left behind. By the time I got back to the office, no one was there.

I breathe a sigh of relief as I started sorting out the heaps of papers on my table, I had been sorting for hours when I received a text from Gomez again saying I could go home for the day, but it was only just 6 o'clock. Tired from the constant sorting, I packed the remaining unsorted files placing them behind my desk when I received another message from Gomez, saying I should also take the weekend off.

What was happening? Today was my first day on the job, I didn't need a weekend off, even if it was thoughtful but, it's too early in my career. I thought hard about why when my mind shifted to a sudden incident that happened this afternoon and a chill went up my spine.

Was I being...laid off? No, if I was Liam would have confronted me directly, he's not the type to take the easy way out. Is he?

I couldn't think properly, I packed my things extremely slowly as I thought about all the possibilities of what could have happened. I eventually called Smith to come to pick me up but I told him to drive me straight home.

I said almost nothing throughout the ride home, just the occasional one-line answers, I got home just a few minutes before dinner so I went up straight to my room, I needed a break from thinking.

A few minutes later, I heard a knock on my door, I already knew the maid was here to tell me to go to the dining room.

"I'll be there in a minute," I said but the knocking became constant and annoying as well. I jumped out of my bed opening the door with as much force as I had been frustrated.

"I said I'd be out," I shouted at the maid who was startled by my sudden outburst.

Then I noticed the tray of food in her hands, I looked back at her confused before she spoke.

"The master has gone out for a dinner meeting with Miss Veronica's fiance, I was instructed to serve you dinner when you arrived home." I started at her for a moment before moving out of the way for her to set the food down.

She bowed slightly as she left the room closing the door behind her, I felt sorry for dumping my frustrations on her so I hurried out to apologize.

"I'm sorry for shouting," I said before she took the corner. She only smiled and walked away. Weird.

I went back to my room and locked the door, I wouldn't be accepting any kind of disturbance tonight. After I had my dinner, I set the tray aside and tried calling Nancy, it rang a few times before she picked up.

Nancy: "Oh my goodness, with the way Smith explained how worried you were, I wasn't sure if I should disturb you or not. How are you Cyra?" Nancy said immediately.

Me: "I guess I'm fine, I was just thinking about all that happened today."

Nancy: Does it have anything to do with the contract you sent me?

I stayed quiet for a moment and Nancy sighed.

Nancy: You don't have to worry Cyra, after what you did for them today, you should be promoted to the board of trustees.

Me: I know but I can't help but worry, I was told to get off work early and that I had the weekend off, doesn't that sound suspicious too? It was like yesterday they tried their best to get rid of me and now they had a reason.

I told Nancy pouring out the pains in my heart.

Nancy: Er... Who am I talking to become it can't be the Cyra that I know. The Cyra I know is strong and determined and doesn't give a shit what anyone says. Your family has caused you more heartbreak than this, you handled that, you can handle it. I know you can.

I smiled over the phone at the encouragement from my new best and only friend.

Me: Thanks, Nancy.

Nancy: Don't sweat it, maybe they're giving you the weekend off because your boss has some rich friends he's having over the weekend, I could look it ups for you if you want.

Nancy offered. I shook my head as if she could see me before I answered.

Me: No, I would like to protect his privacy as much as I can. The less I know the better for me.

Nancy: Well, it's your loss.

Me: By the way, I still haven't thanked you for today. You were amazing and in such little time.

I started praising Nancy in an attempt to change the subject.

Nancy: Well, it's all in a day's work and a good team effort. Besides, you already made most of the corrections in the document, I wonder what kind of hell those Americans put you through to work that fast and efficiently too.

Me: I was a kid on scholarship with no solid income, I had to work twice as hard to secure my place as an intern and also prove my skills to be awarded some benefits. That's how I survived.

Nancy: You really had a rough life, didn't you and your father never even helped once?

Me: I can't blame him, all the money he sent went through Patricia, so I used the money he would send at the beginning of a semester to try to survive.

Nancy: That's why you had to keep the scholarship.

Me: My time in America was a bitter-sweet memory, but at least I gained useful skills there and with my salary here, I can move out of this death trap soon.

Nancy: And I can move in with you.

Nancy said cheerfully.

Me: I would like that.

The conversation lasted another hour before Nancy had to put down the phone, I promised to come to help out at the cafe tomorrow since I had nothing better to do. We said our good nights and I put my phone down to charge.

I still wasn't able to sleep as I worry most of the night about the next week, would I still have my job then or would I have to work for my father at his company, the anxiety was killing me but I fell asleep eventually.

I spent the weekend working with Penny and Nancy at the shop and as usual, it was a whole lot of fun, but it wasn't enough to shake off my insecure thoughts.

Monday finally came and I went to work early as usual, I got Liam's tea and placed it on the table. I arrived earlier than him so I was sure I was in the clear today. The elevator bell dinged and I shot up patting down my skirt.

"Good morning Mr Richards," I said with a smile. Liam looked at me nodded and headed straight to his table.

Nothing happened, stay calm Cyra, you can do this, I said to myself, but before I could settle down.

"Cyra. Come here." Oh hell No!
