Chapter 8 - Mr Smith

Renee Johnson and a guy named Jeffrey Long are in the briefing room of the mysterious Compound. Apparently both of them have questions, and only this man in front of them now can give answers.

Mr Smith: Welcome to the Compound you two. Please, sit. (Mr Smith tells them as he motions for them to sit down in front of his desk)

Renee Johnson: Okay. (Renee says as she cautiously takes a seat, being wary of the twins)

Jeffrey Long: Thank you. (Jeffrey says as he nervously sits down, also feeling uneasy by the presence of the twins)

Mr Smith: You don't have to worry about them, they are simply here for my protection. (The older gentleman explain with a smile)

Mark Ross: Hey. (Mark casually said)

Eva Ross: Sup. (Eva adds with a smile)

Mr Smith: See, they're friendly... Now let's get down to business, I assume by now you have both realised that you are no longer living normal lives, right? (Mr Smith asks)

Jeffrey Long: Yeah. (Jeffrey replies)

Renee Johnson: Obviously. (Renee adds)

Mr Smith: It is all because of this man here. (Mr Smith says as he places a picture down on his table, showing the image of a handsome man with long dark hair)... Now we don't know who he is, or where he comes from. But we know that he has the incredible ability to save people from the brink of death. (Mr Smith explains)

Renee looks at the picture of the man, and instantly recognized him.

Renee Johnson: That's him, that's the doctor that fed me his blood! (Renee realised)

Jeffrey Long: I recognize him too, but he was not a doctor when I met him, he was a paramedic. (Jeffrey said)

Mr Smith: He comes in many ways, but his objective is always the same. To save someone from death. (Mr Smith explains)

Jeffrey Long: But isn't that supposed to be a good thing? (Jeffrey asks)

Renee Johnson: Obviously not! Since it screwed up our lives somehow. (Renee tells him)

Mr Smith: You're absolutely right... You see there's only one problem with saving someone from the brink of death, and it's that it means death has been cheated of a soul... Doctors and others save people all the time, but this man here, is doing so using unnatural methods, and that is costing us dearly now... Do you remember what he asked before he saved your lives? (Mr Smith questioned)

"Do you want to live? If I do it, if I save you. Know that it means that your mundane life will be over. You will be forced to live in a world filled with untold pain, and an endless suffering. Knowing this, do you still want to live? (Renee remembered)

Renee Johnson: This is what he meant by that. That bastard did this to me! (Renee realised)

Mr Smith: Not him, Renee. Death is the one that is after us, and there's nothing we can do to stop it... The very circumstances that should have lead to our deaths, will come back to us as our Reckonings. Terrifying creatures who will not stop until they see us all dead. (Mr Smith explains)

Renee Johnson: No! This shouldn't apply to me anymore, mine is already dead! So that means I'm free, right?! (Renee asks desperately)

Mr Smith: I'm afraid not. There's no way to really kill a Reckoning, it's an impossible task. (Mr Smith tells her)

Renee Johnson: I killed it myself! It's dead! And is never coming back, right?! Right?! (Renee yells as she got up from her seat)

Mark Ross: Please settle down. (Mark tells her)

Renee Johnson: You stay out of this! (Renee yells at him)

Eva Ross: Wow, rude. (Eva said with a smile)

Mr Smith: While it is possible to kill your Reckoning, it is only a temporary solution to the problem. Killing your Reckoning just get's you seven days of freedom. But it will always be back. (Mr Smith explains)

Eva Ross: And sometimes it comes back more dangerous than before. So always killing your Reckoning is not very advisable. (Eva explains)

Renee Johnson: No! No! No! This can't be happening to me! What did I ever do to deserve this?! I don't even know this guy! (Renee yells in frustration)

Mr Smith: I'm afraid this is the price we have to pay for our Immortality.

Renee Johnson: I never asked to be immortal! I never asked for any of this. (Renee said with tears in her eyes)

Mr Smith: I know... I know that all this can be overwhelming, but that's why we're here. I created this place to be a safe haven for people like us, a place where we can learn to live as normal a life as possible, without worrying about this curse that looms over us. (Mr Smith explains)

Jeffrey Long: (Sighs) This is a lot to take in. All of a sudden my life had been turned upside down, and you're telling me to just accept it. Isn't there a solution, some way to fix this? (Jeffrey asks hopefully)

Mr Smith: No there is not... All we can do is help you live with it, nothing more, nothing less. (Mr Smith tells him)

Jeffrey Long: What about my family? Can I contact them, tell them what's going on? (Jeffrey asks)

Mr Smith: Of course you can contact your family, but I'm afraid that you can't tell them where you are or what you're going through. Not only will they not believe you, but it could also put this place in serious danger. And I will not let that happen. (Mr Smith said frimly)

Renee Johnson: Are you saying we can't leave?! (Renee asks)

Mr Smith: You're free to leave anytime you wish, but know that as long as you live under my roof, you will follow my rules... Leaving here without fully grasping the reality of your situation, will just put the lives of those you love at risk... Reckonings usually vanish before they can be seen by the eyes of a mortal, and all the damage it has caused will vanish with it. (Mr Smith explains)

Renee Johnson: I thought I was going crazy when everything just returned to normal. But now you're telling me that it's a power of theirs?! (Renee asks)

Mr Smith: Yes it is... Reckonings are powerful and mysterious creatures of death, and we've only recently discovered that the same group of people can't keep you safe for long. Sooner or later the Reckoning will get used to those you surround yourself with, and when it does come for you, those around you will not be able to save you from it's wrath, rather they might also meet the same fate. (Mr Smith explains)

Jeffrey Long: So how does this place protect us then?! You're making it sound like we're screwed no matter what we do! (Jeffrey finally yells)

Mr Smith: The Compound has many rooms, and many more employees. All constantly keeping watch and monitoring everything and everyone living here. With so many eyes keeping watch, it is completely impossible for a Reckoning to show up here. And even if they were to somehow appear here, we have very capable individuals who are well trained and equipped to handle them. (Mr Smith says confidently, referring to Mark and Eva)

Mark Ross: Hey. (Mark simply says)

Eva Ross: Sup. (Eva adds)

Renee Johnson: All of this is a lot to take in, I'm still not sure I want to stay here... I'd rather go home. (Renee admitted)

Mr Smith: Then how would you like to see the death of another Reckoning? Would that change your mind? (Mr Smith asks)

Renee Johnson: What do you mean?

Mr Smith: Your Reckoning has already been taken care of, that gives you, I think six days of freedom right? (Mr Smith asks)

Renee Johnson: It was killed yesterday... So, yes. (Renee answered)

Mr Smith: Mr Jeffrey's Reckoning is still very much alive, and we will have to kill it before he decides if he's going to leave or stay. Would you like to witness the death of his Reckoning, Miss Renee Johnson? (Mr Smith asks with an intense look in his eyes)

Jeffrey Long: You want me to face that thing again?! I don't want to! You can't make me! (Jeffrey yells as he jumps to his feet)

Mr Smith: Don't you want to be free, Mr Jeffrey? Even if it is only temporary, this can greatly help you decide... As to if you really want to stay here, or leave. (Mr Smith tells him with a smile)
