Duchess Alicia stood alone by the window, peering out into the pitch-black night. The wind howled and the rain battered against the glass, creating an eerie atmosphere that made her skin crawl.
She clutched a white wine glass in one hand, her knuckles white as she gripped it tightly. On the other hand, she held a letter from Edward. Her hands shook as she reread its contents.
The thunder boomed and lightning flashed, making her jump. She gulped down the white wine in her glass, hoping it would calm her nerves. But nothing could ease the agitation in her mind.
She stumbled over to her sofa as she read the letter again and again, but the words remained the same. Edward had asked her to kill Beatrice and had even provided her with poison. It was insane. She couldn't possibly do it.
