Chapter 15 - Bad News

Sapphire

I returned safely at home on Sunday after spending the night at Grandma's place. After leaving the palace and learning that there was more to the murder of the mermaid at Lake Union, I decided to report to my supervisor. If I was sure, the case of the missing girls were never reported to the Paranormal Bureau Investigation Of Supernatural Crimes. Sir Eric must have swept it under the carpet and kept it under wraps. Today I was driving to work, pretty pleased with my self that I was arriving early. It was just 7:33am as I parked in the parking lot.

I walked into my department with cheerfulness, bouncing because I was a step closer in my investigation. My colleagues were in our office which we shared today, laughing at Buck's stupid jokes.

"Why are you guys looking shocked?" I asked as I took a seat. They looked so surprised I came early, if not for the stress of working two jobs at once and not getting enough rest.

"Nothing, it's just that you came early." Sandra countered. Moments later, our head of department Sir Martins entered the office and also looked shocked to see me though his face returned to his neutral mask.

"I have an announcement to make at 9:00pm. Detective Stone follow me to my office." I felt a foreboding feeling like something was wrong but I shrugged it off.

When we arrived at his office, Sir Martins gestured for me to take a seat.

"Detective Stone you are early to work today."

"Yeah, I took to heart your words. If I really wanted a promotion, I have to set an example." I smiled waiting for him to join me. But instead his face creased into frown lines.

"Detective Stone I've got some news to tell you." I shifted my feet in unease waiting for what could possibly have Sir Martins in a such a mood.

"Ok." I nodded for him to go on.

"About that promotion I promised you..." Geez! Please don't tell me it's what I am thinking.

"I'm sorry Stone, it had been given to someone else." I squeezed my eyes in pain and would have burst into tears if I hadn't controlled myself.

"Why?" I asked, I simply wanted to know the reason that was not possible. I could guess because I was a female but couldn't be all of it, could it?

"Because of some certain reasons." He answered answered as if he was deflecting the question. I narrowed my eyes in suspicion, if I wanted I could pick at his brain and get my answer. I shook my head clearing that thought from it, it would be wrong of me to invade his mind. This was the harpy part of me speaking. Sirens had two elements in them, the normal siren nature and harpy nature. The harpy nature develops when a siren is bitter, not happy with things not getting done in their own way. It only arises when a siren is craving vengeance, revenge or retaliation for a wrong done to them.

"Is it because of the fact that I'm a woman?" I asked looking at his face for any tells. Sir Martins had a very good poker face but I was a better detective.

"I don't know." He deadpanned but there was a little crease at the underside of his eye. Damn! I knew that was the main reason.

"So the higher authorities deemed it fit that the fact that I'm a woman deters me from doing from job?" My voice rose as I stood up.

"Detective Stone calm down." If only these people knew what I did as my second job, then they will be thanking me cause I kept them safe even though indirectly.

"So what was their final decision?"

"They felt someone else should be handed the mantle of leadership... " Which in this case was not me.

"Wait let me guess, one of the guys were selected for the job." Buck would be the most appropriate guy for this job because he had this leadership thing going on.

"I wish that it was that easy." My eyebrows arched as his statement, so if none of the guys at our department was chosen, then who was chosen?

"They brought in a detective who they are transferring from Nevada Las Vegas." Wow that really shocked me with that, I never expected the higher-ups to be such assholes. I think even Sir Martins was pissed at their decision.

"So who is this person?" At least I could know the name of the person usurping my position.

"Wait, let me see." Sir Martins checked around his deck before picking up a piece of paper.

"Micheal Steel." He said looking up from the paper. Say what now? It possibly couldn't be the Micheal Steel I knew. It had to be another person, gosh! It better be another person with the same name.
