"Yes, I did." She paused, trying her best to stay composed. His tone didn't seem too surprised, though. As if he had suspected.
Mira blinked, her brow furrowing and a confused frown crossing her face. Closing his laptop abruptly, he stood up from his chair and moved towards her slowly. His step towards her echoed through the office. Her eyes followed his every step. She took a deep breath, keeping her cool.
"What are you- doing? " she asked, taking a step backwards but not taking her eyes off of him. She felt her back hit by the desk. Taking a few steps closer. He looked down at her, his hazel green eyes piercing hers.
"You know I don't like to be controlled," he said while placing his palms on the desk and leaned forward towards her, trapping her between him and the desk. He was the first man to ever come this close. Or to be exact, the first ever man whom she allowed this close.
"You will go and cancel this marriage now or else I will make you regret your decision," he said with a low menacing voice. Mira's heart pounded against her chest. His hazel green eyes laced with danger. He was the dangerous person to mess with. But at the same time he was also the one who was holding all the cards. She felt helpless, powerless. She was controlled by everyone; grandma, grandpa and Zion. She was just a piece of pawn on their chessboard.
"I also don't like to be controlled, Mr Martson," Mira asserted in a low and threatening tone, watching his reaction carefully. He narrowed his eyes, his eyes darkening. He tightened his grip on the edge of the desk, gripping his fist tightly.
"So you mean you won't cancel the marriage?" he asked gently, licking the inside of his cheeks with scoff. His eyes burning with anger as his hands balled into fists.
"No, I don't want to cancel it," She replied confidently. She knew she was playing with fire. Zion was the most ruthless person when it comes to enmity. However, her pride prevented her from backing down.
She needed to show him she was more than a chess piece, she was more than just a pawn.
"Leave now, before I do something that will hurt your pride," He warned, a sinister glint flashing in his eyes. He released his hold on the desk and stepped back allowing her to walk past him.
Mira looked at him for a moment before walking towards the door of his office. He was standing quietly with his hands in his pockets. Watching her, she could sense his gaze drilling into her body.
She continued and walked out of the office, closing the door behind her. She heard a loud sound of breaking glass and ceramic pieces right after she closed the door.
....
The day dragged on. Everything seemed to move in slow motion for Mira, and she found herself unable to focus her attention. Her mind was preoccupied with thoughts and they were slowly eating her from inside. She was so occupied that she didn't even notice Dhalia standing with a bundle of files right beside her until she placed them with a loud thud on her desk.
THUD!!
A shocked gasp escaped her lips as she jumped slightly from the sudden noise.
"Back to reality Mira," Dhalia said sternly with an angry look on her face.
"Sorry," Mira replied in a quiet voice as she looked down at the bundle of files.
"Put them in the archive ," Dahlia ordered as she started walking towards the elevator, leaving Mira to stare down at the pile of files.
It wasn't long until Mira arrived at the archives. She began putting the documents in the file cabinet before her eyes caught sight of the photograph in one of the articles.
She picked the article up from the shelf and scanned it over. Her eyebrows frowned as she read the article.
IS ZINNIA RAVENWOOD IS HAVING AFFAIR WITH THE CEO OF GRANDIOSE GROUP?
The article was about her mother. The picture that was imprinted on the article was her mom getting out of the car with the CEO of Grandiose Group. She couldn't believe the words she was reading.
"What is going on? Was her mother betraying her father too? And with the CEO of Grandiose Group? What exactly happened 20 years ago?" Mira muttered to herself as her finger traced the picture of her mother on the article. She pulled her out of her blazar pocket and opened the newest article about Grandiose Group.
THE CEO OF GRANDIOSE GROUP DISAPPEARED AFTER THE BANKRUPTION OF THE COMPANY!
"There is something fishy. Something is not adding up here?"
Her phone rang in her hand with an unknown number displayed on the screen. Looking at the caller ID she swiped her finger to answer the call.
"Hello, who is this?" she asked as soon as the person on the other end answered.
"Did you read the article, Mira Reid?" the person on the other side asked, his voice was canceled with a modulator. She looked around her with wide eyes.
"You must be wondering how did I know?" he continued, chuckling softly on the other line.
"Who are you?" Mira asked again, her voice trembling slightly. She could barely keep calm.
"It isn't important who I am Mira. What's important is what's going to happen next." his voice was still calm and nonchalant, yet she could feel her heartbeat quicken in panic.
"The next news will be the CEO of Grandiose Group committed suicide just like your mother did," He laughed mockingly and in the most evil way before hanging up the phone.
She looked at her phone screen with a heavy heart. Sweat beads appeared on her forehead as her stomach churned with nausea.
