Bella left Carter in the library. Leaving the man who was still her husband to contemplate alone. Carter now realizes that his decision to go to the ranch was wrong. Bella was really in good shape, and therefore not at all impressed by his pretext of concern.
Another thing was the arrival of Reef Davis on the same day. She didn't expect him to come to see Bella either. Although legally, he had the right to Bella, Bella's heart had left him a long time ago. Perhaps it was never given to her in the first place. Denying it all the time only shows your stupidity, that's what Reef said while they were waiting.
Reef may have been a little cheeky for daring to mock him, but what he did to him was arguably the same thing. Upon entering the library and seeing Carter there, Reef grinned. "Oh, I'm not surprised you came here."
"And why am I surprised to see you standing there so confidently? Have you slept with my wife?"
