Mariel and Brenda looked at Bella with furrowed brows. Of course they won't understand, Bella thought. The words she spoke only raised more questions that needed explanation, but she wasn't going to say anything more. The risk was too great.
"I can't ask questions, can I?" asked Brenda.
"No, Bren," Bella shook her head. "That's all I can say. But well, if you think this has something to do with life and death, well... let's just say that."
"Damn it, Bel. Don't make me worry!" snapped Mariel. "Oh my! I'm sorry I asked."
Bella laughed and felt sorry for her two friends. "Never mind, it's not your burden. I promise I'll take care of it. Nathan helped me."
"I didn't think he was such a nice guy," Brenda said. "Nathan Wilford is helping with the life and death issues of someone who openly dislikes him and he ignores that fact. Wow!"
