Veronica sat in the back of the taxi, clutching her espresso, the bitterness of the coffee matching her mood. The taxi swerved through the early morning traffic, and she watched the cityscape pass by. Another day, another job. She sighed, reflecting on how little had changed since her last workplace.
Augsburg had never felt like home. Not now, not even in the last couple of years she'd lived in the city. She'd left her hometown after being released from the juvenile detention facility because of how many bad memories it held for her.
She'd attended a state-owned university in Augsburg but had never truly made any real friends. Whatever schoolmates she'd happened to talk to at the time had all been left in the past. One or two of them had tried to keep in touch, but she was always quick to give reasons why she could go for meet-ups and hangouts till they stopped inviting her.
