Morning came like a fog, bringing cold and heavy wind with an eerie rumbling as if trying to wash off traces of all that had occurred the day before from everyone's mind as well as the blood from their hands. The dark clouds gathered in a tightly packed cluster above the city of Augsburg, and only the noise of thunder startled Veronica awake.
She blinked up at the dim lighting, disoriented from sleep as she listened to the rain beat continuously against the windows. Her hair was a disheveled mess from sleeping on the hard floor, her sides hurt but not as badly as her neck.
A cool breeze wafted through the bottom of the bedroom door, sending goosebumps down her skin even under the thick fabric of her long-sleeved white shirt. She sat up, wincing as her sore limbs protested against the movement. "It's so cold", she mumbled, rubbing her left upper arm.
