Chapter 6 - He who hasn’t forgotten

In the god realm, Vital and Teko had a conversation about Jes. Teko started "Aren't you lucky that ***** was there to assist with the problem regarding one of your followers?" Vital responds "You mean Jes? He was indeed useful this time around. Though I hope he won't cause as much trouble as he did in the beginning."

Teko responds "Indeed. He has calmed down a lot since then." Vital says "Back in the day, he would cause so much trouble." Teko said "Indeed."

Then a small pause came before Vital brought up a topic Teko didn't want to hear. She said "Do you think it's because of the knowledge he had from the outer gods or the world before us?" Teko said "The knowledge that he has from before our time is indeed something not to be taken lightly. The knowledge that an outer god who died during the end of the last world must have affected how he acted back then."

Vital says "I wonder what the worlds that came before us looked like. Did they have beautiful moments like we do?" Teko says "Only ***** and outer gods know now. What I heard ***** speaking about other worlds gave me the idea that ***** had fond memories of them."

Vital then says "Is that so? I need to ask Jes later then. I hope he can give me a clear picture. I wonder why I haven't asked about this before?" Teko says "It is possible that either you haven't thought about it before, you chose to forget or you were forced to forget."

Vital says "I don't know. I now have a feeling that I might have seen something once, but I can't remember anymore. For some reason, I feel sorrow while thinking about it." Teko says "I think it's best for you to not know. But you are free to ask ***** if you so choose." Vital responds "Okay. I'll think about it."

After Vital leaves, Teko speaks to himself "As far as the stories ***** told me, I don't really want to know. As beautiful as they might be, I prefer to stay ignorant of those sights. As they say, ignorance is bliss."

Back in the mortal realm, Jes is having a strange customer this time. He is a hooded figure and Jes senses a faint presence of an outer god. Jes knows that it is not possible to be an outer god or its offspring since it's far too weak, so he concludes that it is a worshiper of some sort. The mysterious figure says his name is Ernest and leaves it at that.

As he is meant to be a simple innkeeper, he says nothing to the customer and lets him do what he does. Ernest reads a book in his room and tries to practice some sort of spell. The spell itself is simple, but it requires an outer god's permission to use. The reason why it isn't working is because the outer god in question Nyghtoropte is afraid of angering the innkeeper in any shape or form. For Jes is quite well known amongst the outer gods.

Later, after Ernest has gotten frustrated and decides to try one last time, Jes contacts Nyghtoropte and gives it permission to assist in Ernest's spell. So the spell works at last and a bright light comes from the room it was casted in. Ernest is happy that he has succeeded and goes to sleep soon after.

The spell casted was a simple spell that changes a decent size of meat into a grotesque servant who will watch over. Jes thinks that "This customer might be a bit paranoid, but as he is a follower of outer god, that is to be expected. I just hope that he isn't someone on the wanted list that will cause trouble at this inn. Well, someone in his level must be some grunt at best."

But little did Jes know, Ernest was one of the highest members of Nyghtoropte's cult. He had come to this town to get life sacrifices for his master. Jes knew that Ernest must have some evil intentions, but as he had said, a customer is a customer no matter who they are or what their affiliation is.

Being near a servant of an outer god gives Jes many memories. He talks to himself "I remember how Lignoryste once turned that one town into zombies. They were firm believers of gods of that era, so seeing them crumble like that was hilarious at the time. While it is rather cruel thinking back, they were going to die soon in any case, so how they died didn't really matter." Then he paused for a moment and then said "Well, every mortal dies soon in the eyes of a god. Am I getting too much on the side of evil again? But I have done some good while I have been here, so it should balance itself out."

Then after a long pause, Jes remembers another story. "I remember that one time when Ilutsust made a computer virus that spread the most sensitive information of that time into the public. It caused a mass riot and almost caused the whole world to collapse. It was a shame when most places initiated martial law. I wonder if it will do something similar when this world reaches its end. I can't help but wait." He then gets to his bed for once in a while and as he goes to sleep, he says "As powerful as they are, even outer gods forget in the end. And where do those things end? Back to me. The carrier of memories."

In his mind he thinks "I wonder how O still views things or has it stopped bothering to care."

Then a familiar dream comes to Jes. A boy is waiting for his father to get ready and open a familiar shop. In that shop all things created by wood are sold. Chairs, tables, puppets, figures, all kinds of things. Then a girl that enters the shop every day to try and get the boy to play with her comes to the shop. Bothering the boy while he is working on some wooden figures since that's all he knows to do. The girl keeps pestering the boy to come with her, but then the boy's father comes and makes the girl leave. The girl leaves this time, but the boy knows that she will be back again in a couple of hours when the boy's father is on break.

The same thing repeats itself, when finally the girl manages to get the boy out and play with her. She shows her wonderful inventions to the boy who is dazzled by them. He can't help but feel envious of the girl. But his envy subsided as soon as the girl happily played with the boy. "Why would I get envious, I wonder." The boy thought. When the father of the boy notices that he is gone, the father knows where to look and goes and gets the boy back to the shop by force. The girl tries to stop him, but then the father smacks the girl down and says "Your witchcraft is tainting my boy. Stay away from him." The boy and his father then leave. The girl is left there alone, but she did not weep. She knew what she had to do.

Couple of weeks later, the girl comes to the shop once again. It surprises the boy who then told the girl "You shouldn't be here. Leave before he catches you." The girl smiled and said "Don't worry, you don't have to worry about him ever again. Just come with me and I'll show you the world full of wonder." The boy hesitated for a moment, but then it clicked on him "What else was there besides this workshop?" The boy took the girl's offer and went along with her. What he didn't know was that he wouldn't see his father for a long time.

The girl and the boy left the town they were in and traveled far and wide. How they survive the harsh world was a mystery to the boy, but he cared not since he was beside the girl. Her inventions might have something to do with their survival. Maybe even the fact that his father called her a witch made some sense to their surprising survival skill.

The boy and the girl eventually found a place they could call home far in the woods. There the girl taught the boy to hunt and live by the land. Each day spent with the girl was joyful for the boy. He did not care how the girl was so smart, so he was just as happy as he could be. They had their quarrels every now and then, but they would always make up in the end.

Many years passed and they both were now adults. The girl and the boy were still happy by being with each other. They had changed the place they were staying in many times since the girl wanted to show the world to the boy. But one day, people came to their home and captured the girl. And who was one of the men who captured her? It was none other than the boy's father. He said to the girl "You took my son away from me, so you will suffer the consequences, witch!" They hanged the girl in front of the boy who was screaming for mercy. But it was to no avail. The girl died and the boy had lost the most important thing in his life.

The boy's father then takes the boy back to the workshop and asks the boy "Do you still know how to craft wood?" To which the boy said defeatedly "Yes father." For days he would just craft wood. Then it turned to weeks. Then it turned to months. Then one day the boy got sick of it. He locked the doors from outside the shop and set it on fire. The boy's father was screaming for help, but the boy did not help him as he didn't let him help the girl. The father burns with the rest of the workshop and the boy leaves with nothing else to lose.

Eventually, he reaches one of the houses they had built together with the girl. There, the boy decided to craft a sculpture that looked like the girl. It took months of searching for the perfect wood, but eventually he found one perfect for the job. He took it down and dragged it back to his house. There he spent months working tirelessly on the sculpture. Eventually it was looking just like her and the boy was satisfied.

That night when the boy went to sleep. The sculpture changed into the girl he once knew. Her soul had come to the world of the living. Then she goes near the boy's ear and whispers "Hello Adam." The boy wakes up and is shocked by what he sees. He then touches the face of the girl and asks "Is it truly you?" To which the girl answers "It is me." The boy cries and hugs the girl as hard as he can. He tells the girl how much he had missed her and apologized for not saving her. The girl then smiles and says to the boy "It's alright, I'm now here. We can spend the rest of our life here. Together. Forever."

And so comes the morning and Jes wakes up. He then says "An old memory of time long forgotten. It's beautiful in a sense but when you think about it, you are left to wonder what the girl is and you can't just look at the story the same. If you don't question the story and let its hidden secrets stay as is, you can truly enjoy the story. As for the answer to what the girl is. Well it is simple, but I will not repeat myself again since I have seen the truth many times."

Jes then rises from the bed and goes to cook food for the customer that is about to wake up. During cooking, he mutters to himself "This is why I don't sleep often. Too many memories to handle."

Ernest eventually gets down and eats breakfast. He accidentally let the creature that was guarding the room before follow him and he notices that Jes saw it. He then tries to cast a spell to get rid of Jes, but Jes cancels the spell and then tells him "I know you are worshiper of outer god and I won't judge you. You are a customer and that is all that matters to me. Please feel free to enjoy your breakfast and come again."

Ernest is stunned for a moment until he sits down to his chair slowly and eats slowly. He keeps wondering "How in outer god's name did he know? Is he another one of us? Or is he…" He kept wondering things as he ate. Eventually it became time to leave and Ernest put the creature on his shadow and left. He kept wondering as he went to the town "What was that guy's real deal? Need to investigate further."

Then later that week, a familiar face came through the door. It was the little scholar Ilina. Once she entered, she gave a faint "Hello." And came in. Jes said his usual thing and after Ilina got close, Jes said "Is there something wrong Miss Naava?" Ilina said "I… Just don't know how I should treat you." Jes said "Just treat me as an ordinary innkeeper. I aim to do nothing else for a while." Ilina retorts "For a while huh."

Then Ilina gave the book Jes lent her last time and said "I came here to return this book." Jes takes the book and says "You could have kept it since I have no need for it." Ilina says "Well I have memorized it completely so I can write as many copies of it as I'd like. If that's okay with you of course."

Jes thinks for a moment and then says "Do as you wish. So did you find what you seek?" Ilina says "Well in all honesty, I didn't know what I was getting into when I picked that book. At least I now know why there are only two moons instead of three."

Jes says "It is a sad story isn't it. The tale of three moon sisters." Ilina answers "Yes. I don't blame Iliniya for what she did, but I won't condone it either." Jes claps and says "A neutral stance I see. Fairly common one in the kingdom of Paradisi" Ilina is surprised to hear that name and asks "You know about the lost kingdom of Paradisi?" Jes covers his mouth for a moment and says "I think I might have said too much." Ilina has stars in her eyes again as she says "Please tell me more."

Jes thinks for a moment. Then he mumbles to himself "I mean, it is a thing that has been forgotten, but that didn't happen by god's intervention. At least for the most part. Then again, they are going to unearth some truths about it eventually so…" Ilina smiles and stares at Jes with an expectant look.

Then Jes says "Fine, I'll give you a book concerning the rise and fall of the kingdom of Paradisi. Just wait a moment." Jes opens a small portal that fits his hand and grabs a quite thick book. Then he hands it to Ilina and says "You would find some parts of the history in due time, but this gives you a little heads up."

Ilina smiles and says "Thank you so much oh great innkeeper. I will make sure that its contents will be made public. Oh, while I'm here, I'm gonna ask you one more thing." Jes smiles and says "What is it?" Ilina then asks "Can I copy the content of this book and the tale of the three moon sisters?" To which Jes answered "Do as you wish."

Then Ilina begins to leave happily, but before she closes the door she says "I'll be sure to make many breakthroughs with your help. Thanks, oh great innkeeper." Then she leaves and Jes just waved goodbye.

Then Jes quotes the book about the three moons "I may have lost the man I love, but I'll be sure that his husk won't be tainted by the power of ill will. For this reason I will do what I must and get rid of you ilk." Then Jes looks up and says "I wonder if you are happy now that someone tells your story. May Tristian's will carry on." Then he quotes another part of the book as he closes his eyes "Even though I have lost you to your great love over us, I understand this pain you cause me and and the meaning behind it. But so it has to be done. My dear goddess of moon Iliniya. I, Tristian, will promise this."

Then Jes looks at the front door as he does most of his days. Then he says "Perhaps I should spread these stories that I have to the public in the form of fairy tales? Like the story I saw last time I slept."
