While Jack was helping Jane, I went into the living room with my father.
“What was that about? You were mean to Jack.”
“He needed to know I don’t like him. He hurt my little girl, and needs to realize forgiveness doesn’t come easy.”
“He knows that it doesn’t come easy. He’s here trying to spend time with me.”
“What’s going to happen when you leave, and he doesn’t follow you. I doubt he’ll pack up his little girl and move across the country to chase you.”
“Why are you defensive about this?”
“It’s the same thing your mother did.”
“This is different; Jack is here now.”
“And so was your mother at some point. You were little and probably don’t remember, but your mother left us more than once. She left, and she would have her fun and ask for me to take her back, to forgive her, and I did until I couldn’t take it anymore, and I told her if she left again, she wasn’t going to be my wife anymore.”
