Chapter 12 - Zhou Xue

Every step seemed to be treading on Chen's heart. Though it was too dark to see clearly, he could still feel the eerie power slowly corroding him.

Urged by these footsteps, Chen had to speed up and run towards the front, and soon the gate of the duty room and the morgue appeared in his sight.

The duty room was still lit with a white lamp, but there was no sign of John. The gate of the morgue, however, was mysteriously ajar.

At the end of the corridor, a gray fog was gradually surging in. Chen hesitated for a moment, and then finally ... pushed open the gate of the morgue!

In the darkness, only the sound like footsteps echoed endlessly around.

Then, it stopped beside his ears.

Through the gate of the morgue, Chen could even feel that something was standing outside the door, quietly watching him.

Then, both sides seemed to be in some kind of eerie stalemate.

After a while, Chen suddenly found that a strange gray fog was slowly pouring into the morgue from the bottom of the door crack. At this moment, a hand reached out from behind him and covered his mouth, dragging him into the darkness.

The gray fog that surged in from the bottom of the door crack rolled around the door for a while, as if it hadn't noticed anything, and finally slowly withdrew. After a while, the door made a creaking sound again, but this time it was gradually getting farther and farther away.

At the same time, the hand that covered Chen's mouth finally moved away slowly.

In the darkness behind him, a face appeared.

"John ... is it you?"

Chen took a deep breath with lingering fear, "Thank you."

"Hehe, how did you know it was me?", came the familiar voice from behind.

"Seeing that the duty room was empty, I thought you might have hidden in here."

"I didn't have time to remind you, but you are a smart man,"

Chen didn't continue the conversation, but instead changed the topic, "What was that just now?"

"I don't know," John seemed to shake his head in the darkness, "evil spirits, ghosts, in short, they are the embodiment of supernatural powers in the story, and they can kill us instantly."

"How did you know that hiding in the morgue could escape its pursuit?"

"It's just a guess. Ghosts and ghouls chase and kill people, maybe because they can sense our breath. In the morgue, there are all dead bodies, and the air is full of death. When the supernatural attack came, I thought perhaps we could use the death in it to cover up the breath of the living and escape the pursuit of the ghost."

Chen thought for a moment, perhaps it was true. Fortunately, he vaguely thought of this layer, so he didn't choose the bright duty room, but instead escaped into the gloomy morgue.

And John, obviously noticed this earlier than himself.

Although so, the two still waited for more than ten minutes until they were sure that the outside was completely calm before cautiously leaving the hiding place.

John wiped the sweat from his forehead. "Did you hear the footsteps? The ghost who was chasing us was probably the corpse that ran out of the morgue last night. And it seems that the story has given the core clues. Otherwise, it won't be so grand. The ghost will appear and kill directly."

Chen nodded, and then he also told John about nurse Xiaoyu's possible involvement in the story and the clues left by the other party.

"Qi and Zhou Xue, both of these people have had contact with Zhao Heping. We have already gotten some information about Qi, and this Zhou Xue is still vague now. And don't forget that Xiaoyu's death and this supernatural attack happened after we contacted Zhou Xue. This person should at least be an important character in the story."

"What is the identity of this Zhou Xue, and what is the connection between him, Qi and Zhao Heping? It is necessary to investigate it as the focus."

Chen nodded, which was also the part that had puzzled him.

Chen nodded, which was also the part that John had brought up that had been puzzling him.

"It's a shame that I'm not the real Zhao Heping."

Since he wasn't the real Zhao Heping and was only borrowing the identity of the other in the story, there weren't any memories of Zhao Heping in Chen's mind, which must have been added difficulty for the participants of the story.

Since the supernatural power had already dissipated, it wasn't appropriate for the two to keep talking, so after John returned to his duty room, Chen also left the basement. As the elevator door opened, the bustling hospital scenery around him returned, as if everything that had happened was just an illusion.

Just as Chen was looking around in a daze, a voice came from behind him again, "Doctor Zhao! Doctor Zhao!"

Chen turned around and saw another nurse, her face anxious, "Doctor Zhao, where have you been? The dean has been looking for you."

"Dean Qin? Looking for me?"

The nurse nodded blankly, "Yes, you'd better hurry."

Chen nodded and thought to himself, Could this have triggered a new plot?

When he arrived at the dean's office, he found out that he had thought too much, it was just because the dean had asked him this morning to find John in the morgue to find out what had happened.

Of course, Chen couldn't put the ridiculous story of "Corpse revival" on the table, he just said that John had drunk too much and fell asleep during the night shift, and he didn't know what had happened that night.

"This guy is really neglecting his duty!" Dean Qin was obviously very angry after listening to Chen's report, but he probably thought of John being introduced by Zhao Heping and forcibly suppressed his anger.

After Chen finished his duties, he was about to leave, but when he looked up, he saw that Qin, the Dean, had a hesitant expression on his face.

Chen was touched. "Dean Qin, is there anything else?"

"Actually... ah..."

Before the director could even finish his sentence, he sighed. "Doctor Zhao, our hospital has been so understaffed lately, and it's been hard on you."

Obviously, the Dean had something else to say.

Since that was the case, Chen decided to stay and sat back down. "What is it, Dean Qin? Just say it."

"Doctor Zhao..."

"The accident with Nurse Zhou was unexpected, and we all know that it had a big impact on you. Your work performance hasn't been the best lately, but even if the operation failed, the hospital still has to bear the responsibility, right?"

Dean Qin paused and hesitated.

"People can't come back from the dead. Let's just forget about the situation with Zhou and look forward instead. Don't you agree?"

Upon hearing this, Chen's face showed a sad expression, even though he was surprised in his heart.

The Dean's words brought new information.

Zhou was a nurse in the hospital.

Zhou had a close relationship with Zhao Heping.

And she had died unexpectedly.

This Zhou was clearly another important clue!

Back in his office, Chen immediately opened his computer and typed "Seventh People's Hospital Nurse Death" into the search bar.

A long list of information soon appeared. The top post was one that had been posted more than a month ago, titled "Suicide of Seventh People's Hospital Nurse.
