Chapter 8 - The system that determines the good people

Han Fei spent the whole time chatting with Li Xue, thinking they were all "suspects," but only now did he understand that Li Xue was a police officer.

He observed Li Xue's distant figure from the interrogation room. His heart was not as broken since he now had a police officer willing to listen to him. He looked at her with a very enthusiastic gaze.

"Hey! Don't be fooled by her beauty. If we detained you, you might only be prisoned here for a short duration. However, if you fall into her hands, you will be skinned alive without dying. You will eventually desire death." Han Fei was motioned to accompany Zhang Chu into a different room.

In a small room, the chief officer was furiously clutching a phone. This is the station commander who just scolded Li Xue.

Despite his intimidating appearance and commanding speech, Li Xue pays him no attention at all.

"Captain Wang, please control your rage; it's dangerous for your health. She is merely here to perform rudimentary duties despite receiving two honorary awards from the CID. You don't need to be bothered with her." Wen Tao quickly poured a glass of water and placed it next to the chief officer.

"So, what if she has received two awards? Do you think she looks like a cop? She looks like a gangster! Don't run around hanging up my ass if you want to continue your job tomorrow!", The frustrated police officer in his middle forties was not in the mood to listen to Wen Tao.

"You are determined to terminate her. Her parents would beat the drums to show her respect. I've heard her family is pretty wealthy. Her parents have been against her going into law enforcement." Wen Tao quickly finished speaking before noticing that the chief officer was irritated.

"Captain Wang, Han Fei is here." he quickly changed the subject.

Captain Wang finally calmed down when he heard Han Fei's name and adopted a professional demeanor, "Please accept my apologies for keeping you waiting so Jiang, young man. I hope you have nothing to conceal because we want to ask you a few questions."

Even though Han Fei has been living honestly for more than twenty years, this is his first visit to a police station. He responded, "Trust me, officer, I will absolutely cooperate with the police.," despite his natural nervousness.

The government database and its evaluation of the personality profile for each citizen were considered big data.

The police can now easily handle cases considerably more than in the past because of the rapid advancement of technology. Every citizen has a unique profile based on their information. Computers can even evaluate how much a person may be susceptible to crime.

Furthermore, many police officers have highly specialized lie detector software and case management analyzers on their tablets. Thanks to technology, the likelihood of false convictions are minimized.

The entire exchange lasted one hour before they allowed Han Fei to go.

Han Fei was not suspected of arson either by computer analysis or personality profile using big data. The system gave him an extraordinarily uncommon threat score of 0.

In other words, Han Fei wasn't just unlikely to commit a crime; he was also genuinely a good citizen.

At least, that's what the big data analysis was.

"Captain Wang, we're just going to let him go like this?"

"There is nothing we can do to keep him from leaving; the police station does not have the authority to hold suspects," the chief replied.

Han Fei's citizen information lay on the table, and Captain Wang studied it as his eyebrows furrowed in unison. "Our district has been declared the safest district in Karhold for five consecutive years. A major crime was committed suddenly this month. The evidence section is still unable to identify the source of the fire till now. This is clearly something not simple." he said.

"Should me and Zhang Chu keep an eye on him?"

"Watch out for the security; don't let him find out." Captain Wang covered all information on Han Fei.

"I've been a cop for many years, but this is the first time I've encountered an adult with a zero threat score. My old instructor taught me that there are two kinds of individuals with perfect threat scores. Simple-minded and kind-hearted people fall into one category. Even they can't consistently maintain a threat score of zero."

"What about the other kind of person?" He was encircled by Wen Tao and Zhang Chu.

"The other type is the sneakiest and most dangerous. They are high-profile criminals with great intelligence. They are experts in hacking and using self-hypnosis to guard themselves."

Captain Wang inhaled deeply, "They are all masters of mind games and will go to any length to conceal their true criminal nature. These individuals may appear kind and innocent on the outside, but their minds are twisted and corrupted to the extreme."

"Do you believe Han Fei is that kind of person?"

"I'm not sure, but it would be wise to remain cautious."

.

.....

Han Fei, a "high-profile criminal," grabbed the just-purchased bread from the vending machine. He was standing in front of the police station. "Does the police station keep people without meals for hours?" he remarked quietly.

It is currently midday and approaching eleven. He has yet to hear from Li Xue regarding the older couple.

Han Fei decided to go home first after devouring the bread. However, before he could take further steps, his phone started to ring.

Han Fei was pleasantly astonished when he looked at the caller ID.

"What's going on, director Jiang?"

"Please come to this side of North street in the old town at one this afternoon. I'm filming a new movie. You can come for auditions."

Han Fei was going to mention that he had lately experienced certain things and was not prepared to attend the audition when the other party abruptly hung up the phone.

"Hello? Director Jiang?" Han Fei licked his dry lips as he listened to the beeping sound coming from the other end of the phone.

"I simply have no feelings right now. I'm no Jianger in a condition where I could take on a role.

If he didn't go, it would be a bit insulting to the director who, when he was at his wit's end, was ready to give him a chance.

Han Fei hurried to North street after arriving home, having a shower, and getting dressed.

North Street was located in a vast, multicultural city. The center region has been transformed into a smart city, filled with big buildings, numerous businesses, and top talent from all over the country.

The old town is rather out of date when compared to the central area, yet it is nonetheless kept up the same way it was years ago.

"Is director Jiang Yi here, sir?" When Han Fei arrived at the designated place on the North Street, he was shocked to see two filming crews there—one was filming a remake of a romantic comedy movie, and the other appeared to be a crime thriller.

All his previous works were connected with romantic comedies, so he first went to that crew and inquired.

"Han Fei?" The staff member inspecting the cast enrollment form immediately recognized Han Fei: "Weren't you fired from the company? Why are you coming here again?"

"'Is agency shooting here?" Han Fei was also a bit puzzled. "Director Jiang Yi asked me to come over for an audition."

"No, Jiang Yi is not the director of the "Urban Romance" remake! Did someone play a stupid prank on you?" That employee was only an errand boy on the lowest level of the company, but he was very understanding of Han Fei's situation and wouldn't intentionally try to make things difficult for Han Fei.

"The director is not Jiang Yi?" Han Fei was certain that the address was correct. Since Jiang Yi is not directing this remake, he must be the director of the crime thriller film.

Han Fei carefully turned around and stared at the dark residential building across the street. A banner reading "The Flower of Evil" in four enormous blood-red letters was nailed to the locked apartment door.

"Is this a ploy to get me to play a role in a haunted movie?"
