Chapter 9 - Acting as if he had personally lived through it

Han Fei approached the front of the dark building and knocked softly on the door. A staff worker immediately stepped from the building shortly after.

"Director Jiang invited me to an audition, but I suddenly ran into some problems and may not be able to ..." Han Fei was aggressively dragged inside the building before he could finish speaking.

"You've just arrived on time. The new actors are making director Jiang irritated. Director Jiang has repeatedly turned down applicants because newcomers these days are acting badly and in a different way from how he wants them to."

"I've never acted in a horror movie, and I have something important to do tonight..."

"Director Jiang! The new actor has arrived!"

The employee shoved the script firmly into Han Fei's hand, "Generally, there would be a designated area for auditions, but because this is a low-budget crime thriller and horror film, it's not that necessary. Director Jiang and the others are getting impatient, so hurry and come over."

Han Fei was forced into a room where six actors of all ages were positioned against the wall, each holding a copy of the script. No one dared to speak.

"Are you calling this acting, guys? Have you ever had a genuine respect for this profession? Horseshit, that's all it is!" A middle-aged guy was harshly pointing his finger at the actors from the middle of the room.

One of the young girls started crying because of how harsh his tone was.

"Are you sobbing over your neglect? Why is the fake blood only on your clothes? You don't have any on your hands or face. Would the murderer have gently slashed you intending to keep your face pretty?"

"I'm telling you, if you can't handle getting dirty and gooey, acting is not for you! It doesn't matter whether the sponsors gave you the role; you still need to follow my instructions since you are here to perform in my production." Director Jiang was a grumpy individual who taught at the Shanghai Film and Television Academy and supervised Han Fei's class.

Director Jiang finally turned to Han Fei after giving a harsh lecture and said, "I've heard about your matter. I have a part here for you to try."

When Han Fei analyzed the situation, he actually realized he couldn't refuse to participate directly, so he respectfully stated, "Director Jiang, I have not acted in thrillers."

"You are an actor, understand? The audience can define the actors, but the artists should not define themselves." Director Jiang met Han Fei while carrying the script.

"Our movie is based on the human jigsaw puzzle case, a tragedy that happens a few years ago. The killer has not yet been arrested. I advise you to study the news articles from the time and attempt to understand the character's sentiments better to convey the character more naturally."

"Who am I playing?"

"In the beginning, the human jigsaw puzzle case had seven victims, according to the authorities. The authorities then learned that there was an additional eighth victim through autopsy. The murderer stitched the victims' bodies together into the shape of a jigsaw puzzle using various body parts. You will play the role of Wei Youfu, the second victim."

"I'll give you a brief account of the scene.", Director Jiang hurriedly said while frequently turning the script.

" Wei Youfu is an ordinary white-collar worker, he worked overtime until late at night before returning home, only to find that his wife is not in the house. He sent a few messages to his wife, who replied back that she had gone to her mother's house. Overworked, he didn't think much of it and went straight into the bedroom. The key point came, in fact, the wife did not go to her mother's house, Wei Youfu's wife was already dead by this time, the murderer was hiding in the bathroom to deal with his wife's body, the message just now was also replied by the murderer."

"Can you tell me more about Wei Youfu's personality?"

"Let me complete first. The second half of this scene is the most heartbreaking. Half asleep, Wei Youfu heard the door to his bedroom open. His wife's head was put in the doorway. His terror was immediately sparked, and then it got worse! The killer immediately showed himself with the knife and made him the second victim of his slaughter." A few more details were incorporated into the script by director Jiang.

"We are unable to film a scene that involves chopping up a corpse. We can only convey the brutality through your changing facial expressions to the viewers. The audience's fear must be fueled by your horror. Can you manage it?

"I'll give it a shot as I've never encountered the thriller genre before.", To be a comedy star was Han Fei's ultimate goal. He had no idea how he started auditioning for horror films.

"Alright! Let's examine the area and assess the atmosphere." Director Jiang waved and summoned numerous cameramen to the second story, saying, "This is the site we're interested in; originally, we planned to shoot at the crime scene, but the owner of that murder home was not available to us."

After the curtains were pulled, the already-darkened room appeared depressing and dull.

"Get ready, everyone! Let's cooperate as a team! The male antagonist has not yet arrived. Where is the manager? Here, put on the mask and exit the room to play the killer. You must open the door in time to place the head on the table. Then you should immediately fling open the bedroom door and bolt inside."

Five minutes later, everyone had taken their positions, and the room was immediately quiet.

Director Jiang gave the signal, and Han Fei slowly moved into the position. Han Fei covered his eyes as he lay in the pitch-black bedroom, slowly getting wrapped in darkness.

The memories of last night's horror returned to him, and he realized there was no need to act.

The eerie, cold, bone-chilling, inescapable despair.

"Creakkkkkkk!"

Suddenly, the peaceful room made a low sound. Han Fei opened his eyes in a daze, looked around the bedroom, and then fixed his sight on the lock of the bedroom door.

The wandering gaze gradually came into focus, and before Han Fei was completely awake, the doorknob turned on its own. Everything appeared to have been practiced several times.

The door opened with a slight gap.

His cheeks were stroked by the chilly breeze. It appeared as if a world of the dead was hidden behind that dreadful door.

When five fingers stretched out from the door, Han Fei's memory of fear was triggered!

His face turned white in an instant. There was a natural response of self-defense due to the last night's psychological terror.

His wife's head was on the doorway. His expression darkens as he watches the familiar face, as though he is wondering why he is not with her.

When the bedroom door was entirely opened, the terror that had been concealed in the depths of Han Fei's mind was aroused. The blood-splattered knife mirrored in his eyes as the killer dashed into the night!

He felt the old terror and darkness, but this time, he had nowhere to flee!

The scene of the pale face on the table and the killer in front of him intermingled in his thoughts. The terror deep within Han Fei was triggered, and the genuine threat of death caused him to make the most horrified expression!

That expression was indescribable, and even the manager who was playing the killer running toward Han Fei stopped and turned his head to look behind him.

"CUT!"

Director Jiang holding the script, stormed straight over and angrily yelled at the set manager who was playing the murderer, "Why are you turning your head back! You're a murderer! What are you looking back for!"

"No, Brother Jiang." The set manager took off the mask, and his face was also full of cold sweat, "I just saw Han Fei's expression. I thought there was something behind me, so my head unconsciously turned around to look."

"You're a fucking murderer. What are you afraid of? Such a perfect shot is wasted. I'm so angry!" Director Jiang ran into the bedroom, and he personally helped Han Fei up.

"Han Fei, your acting skills have improved so much! You have a talent for thrillers! I feel like you were born to act in thrillers!"

"Am I really that great at acting?" Han Fei's emotions had only just settled, and his expression had returned to normal.

"Of course! You're acting as if you had personally lived through it, it's awesome!"
