Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

The doorbell rang twice as I struggled to get out of bed. I mumbled profanities as I went to open the door.

It was Detective Marsh. His dark hair combed neatly but a few strands managed to escape their place and tried falling forward towards his face. Honestly he was too good looking to be a cop.

'Mrs Pierce, sorry to bother you. But I have questions that need answers' he said

I hesitated but I didn't want to turn him down and look even more suspicious. I let him in & offered him coffee.

'Mrs Pierce, what exactly is your connection with Randall Bailey?'

'I don't know who he is ' I replied

' I have records showing he sent you money three times in the past month' he said

'That's impossible. If I had actually gotten any money from this Randall I would know. I don't even know who he is.'

Marsh raised a brow, it was obvious he didn't believe a word I said much to my disappointment.

'Wait, I have my bank statement. I just got it last week' I hurried to one of my bags to fetch it.

I showed it to him, and after scanning it for a while he looked up. His phone rang temporarily suspending the almost suffocating tension.

'Lenny is outside. Ma'am you're gonna have to come with us to the station'

'What? Why?' I squeaked ' I'm not going anywhere'

'With all the compelling evidence we have right now, I advise you come with us willingly'

I wasn't sure what they knew or how Randall was connected to me. I obliged and followed them.

I was kept in an interrogation room, my head was spinning.

I was questioned about Randall repeatedly and I kept giving the same answer.

'The account statement you gave us. It says Wreston Bank' said Marsh

'So? What does that have to do with anything?' I asked

'What about your other account?'

'What other account?'

He placed papers on the table separating us. Looking through them I saw my name right there. It showed I had received $30,000 three times in the past month. My mouth hung open in shock.

'This isn't mine. Its not possible' I said

'Really? You don't own an account with Sinclair's?'

'I closed it after Jack and I got married'

'You're saying you don't use this account. But how is your signature there? And you say you closed it'

'Well not personally, Jack said he'd handle it. He does most of the paperwork and bills. Its his thing obviously, as an accountant' I almost huffed

My story wasn't convincing as I was delayed and pressed with more questions. I became claustrophobic just sitting in the room with them, it felt like the walls were closing in on me.

I had reached my breaking point.

'I'm not saying anything else without a lawyer. I already told you I don't know who Randall is, I don't know anything' I almost yelled at them.

'Calm down Mrs Pierce, we're only doing our job'

I crossed my legs and tapped my fingers on the cold table

'my lawyer' I repeated.

I was allowed to make call. I reached out to an old friend Amy. I couldn't use Jack's lawyer, the man was loyal to Jack and probably knew about this.

Amy arrived as fast as she could. And I was let go under 10 mins. They weren't charging me with anything so they couldn't keep me there. And Jack was the only person who could explain the account and until they had valid proof i knew what was going on or Jack was awake, they had no choice but to back off.

Once we were a good distance from the station I spoke up.

'You're a life saver Amy. Thank you' I hugged her

She stood a few inches taller than me in her heels. Her hair was tied up neatly in a bun revealing her slim neck. She killed her look with the sleek grey suit she had on.

Rolling her eyes playfully she replied 'Of course Skye. You owe me one though'

I smiled at her 'definitely, but this isn't over. I still need your help'

'At you service my friend, but you're buying lunch. By the way, what happened to Jack?'

I stilled. I could feel her watchful eyes on me

'That's why I need your help Amy' my voice almost shook 'He's been unconscious for a week'

'What's wrong?'

'Let's head to my place, we could order or I could whip up something' I nervously rambled

'Relax' she put a hand on my shoulder

'we'll order at your place. Let's go'

I was grateful for the comfortable silence Amy graced me with on the ride back to my place.

We ordered and tried catching up at the counter in the kitchen. Amy got serious after a while.

'Skye you need to tell me what's going on. I'm going to do my best to protect you as long as you tell me the truth. We'll find a way' she assured me

I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell her the whole story but I needed help, legally at least.

I took a deep breath

' I almost killed him. Its my fault he's in the hospital'

*****************

Amy stayed with me for a few hours before leaving. I told her all I could remember right down to the woman i saw and the strawberry fragrance. I was in a tight spot, she suggested we make proper plans in case Jack wakes up.

Even if he did she could argue that he was in no condition to be 100% sure if I assaulted him or not.

It wasn't enough though. She would work something out. My head felt heavy but felt a bit of relief that I had told someone who was willing to help me.

As I cleared up, the phone rang.

'Hello'

'Where's my money? Funny how a lady as pretty as you managed to pull this off' a voice responded

I wasn't even sure if that was a compliment or an insult

'Excuse me? Who is this?'

'Don't act stupid. You and your husband are in on this together. The money he sent to you, you thought I wouldn't notice?'

This was definitely Randall, but I had to be sure

'Randall?''

'I thought you didn't know who this was' he chuckled 'pay up or face the consequences'

He hung up.

What the hell had Jack been up to?

I freaked out and called Amy immediately telling her what Happened. She was trying to calm me down when another call came through.

'Let me call you back Amy' I said before switching the call.

'Mrs Pierce, you should come to the hospital. Your husband is showing signs of consciousness'

My heart broke at the news. It was over for me. Here I was, hoping he'd still be unconscious so Amy would have more time. Part of me wished he died.

'I'll be right there.' I replied in a fake excited voice.

This was going to be a problem.
