I made my way to the hospital and remained in the car for a few minutes.
I let out a cry of frustration as i put my head on the steering wheel. My mood almost lightened at the thought of drinking a glass of wine.
I sighed, if Jack was awake he'd probably be able to explain the money to the cops and Randall but I'd still be accused of attempted murder; if he wasn't awake or dead I'd still be under scrutiny by the cops and Randall would come after me.
I went in and found out Jack had been moved to a different room upstairs. I followed the nurse to the elevator going a floor above the previous one. It had less traffic, I took note of every emergency exit I could find like a trapped mouse.
We reached Jack's room, the usual steady beep of his monitor welcomed us. I sat beside Jack and held his hand, it was warm.
Suddenly, His hand moved in mine, it twitched. He opened his eye for a second and closed them back.
'I'll get the doctor'' the nurse rushed off
'Jack?' I called softly
He didn't respond, his eyes remained shut. I looked at the pillow beside him, I could feel a draw towards it like a magnet.
I was crazy, I couldn't kill him.
I needed him alive......Or did I?
My heart raced as I reached out for the pillow.
'Skye'' a low voice said. I almost jerked away in fear before holding his hand.
'Jack? Its me honey' I tried smiling
Doctor Ryan came in 'good to see you Mrs Pierce'
'He's awake' I said resisting the urge to drop his hand but I had to play the concerned wife
'Skye' his voice was louder this time, he held my hand and blinked, struggling to keep his eyes open
'Give it time Jack' the doctor said while checking his vitals
When all was done I moved closer
'I'm so happy you're okay'
'What happened?' he asked looking worried. I grew hopeful.
'You don't remember anything?' I softly asked
He was silent for a moment 'I think I was at the office' he frowned
'Try to rest Mr Pierce. Are you hungry?' asked Ryan
Jack shook his head 'no, thank you'
'Well I'll have the nurse bring food anyways.' he smiled before leaving.
The room was silent once more, I could hear Jack's slow breathing
'Are you okay?' I asked again
''I guess'' he almost slurred. His medication was still wearing off.
We didn't say anything for a while. I was bit uncomfortable.
'How long have I been out?'
'A week'' I replied
'Whoa! I need to call the office' he tried getting up, I stopped him
'Not right now. The doctor told you to rest' I held him down.
He looked confused & worried
'Relax honey. Everything is okay'' I said
He looked unconvinced. My phone beeped, a message from Amy asking if everything was okay. I had forgotten to call her, I quickly replied updating her about the situation.
Footsteps approached, it was Marsh and Lenny. I rolled my eyes, these two were beginning to get on my nerves especially Marsh.
'Honey this is detective Marsh and his partner Officer Lenny' I said to Jack who gave a slight nod.
'We're glad to see you're okay sir' said Marsh
'We just wanna ask a few questions' Lenny said
'My husband needs to rest' I said
'Its fine' said Jack 'go ahead'
'What can you remember?'.
'Not much, its all fuzzy. I remember leaving the office, I was heading home' he paused 'I don't know, I'm not sure. I think I was in a hurry'
My heart thumped loudly, could he remember?
'Why were you in a hurry Mr Pierce?'
'I'm not sure'
'Was someone after you? Where you avoiding something?'
'I don't know' Jack frowned closing his eyes for a second before shaking his head, making me relax a bit.
'Do you think Randall Bailey had anything to do with this?'
I noticed Jack's reaction. He tried masking his shock but I knew him well enough to tell they took him off guard
'I - I don't understand' he said
Just then, the nurse came in with Jack's food
'He needs to eat then rest. Doctor's orders' she said
'Have a good day Mr Pierce' said Marsh then nodded at me ''Ma'am''
Jack exhaled loudly. What was he hiding?
Some of Jack's colleagues from work were coming over in the next few days. A few if our suburban neighbors called asking when Jack would check out of the hospital .
The doctor had cleared Jack, assuring us that Jack's memory might come back in bits even if they didn't start now.
I was tried acting normal around Jack. I didn't bring anything up. I was sweet to him .
I made dinner and gave him his meds, before he went to bed. I felt suffocated just standing in the same room with him.
He was going to remember what happened very soon. I was playing a dangerous game and I had no plan.
I had to do some digging on my own. I was confident Jack knew Randall from the way he reacted. Something was going on.
I cleared up and joined Jack in bed. He came close and held my hand. I didn't want him to touch me.
'Are you okay?' I asked
'Yeah. Just trying really hard to remember....anything'
I really hope he doesn't remember.
'Don't try too hard. You'll wear yourself out' I said stroking his hand
'I guess so' he said drowsily
'Get some sleep' I said before turning off the light.
