Chapter 9 - Memphis

The cavalry rushed into the gate and flooded into the streets followed by the Unsullied. They strictly followed the plan. The cavalry will quickly rush into the pyramids scattered around Meereen, while the unsullied will take over the pits as they are where the slackers are concentrated and also to prevent the slavers from freeing the fighters in the pits.

Meereen had 15 pyramids, which acted as castles for the Slaving Families. The Silent Cavalry split into 15 armies of 1,000 men each to rush into these pyramids and basically 'secure them' by killing every noble, soldier, and slaver and keep any freed slaves in custody so that they do not run amok in the city. The remaining 5,000 headed into the Great Pyramid as it was the seat of power of Meereen and the main stronghold so it needed to be secured quickly and tightly to make sure no one escapes and become a headache later on.

The Unsullied also split into 10 armies of 1,000 men each and formed tight formations while marching towards the pits and killing any hostile groups on the way. Meng Tian had groups of archers who are apparently his spies in the city, stationed on the four gates of Meereen to shoot anyone who tries to leave the city.

A few hours later, I marched into the city with my guards and I was overwhelmed with paradoxical emotions. I saw corpses literally ripped into pieces, and children standing there with their cuffs still on wearing bright smiles on their faces, happy they will not spend the rest of their lives training how to serve men and women in bed, or be thrown into the pits like an animal for the rest of their miserable lives. The contrast was quite confusing, but I was able to stomach it much better compared to Astapor, probably me adapting to this world and having their insane immunity to gore and carnage.

I found the Silent Cavalries in groups of 10s patrolling everywhere to guarantee the city is completely safe and clean of any vermin slavers. I imagined the scenes since we agreed pre-battle that we will not take any noble prisoners to avoid the public outrage that usually comes with public executions, yet I still grimaced at the blood running like rivers throughout the entrance of the Great Pyramid, even after they removed the bodies. All the bodies were thrown into one of the pits and now we stand at the greatest pit to the northeast of the Great Pyramid, We formed a great pyre and had the bodies torched for hours with the freed slaves coming one by one throwing their chains, shackles, and fetters into the fire. The fire was raging for the whole night and Meereen was covered in smoke, soot, and sunlight with all the slavers burnt to ash and no one pitied them.

Three months later, my father followed the script and appeared on top of the dais leading to the Great Pyramid on top of his pitch-black stallion, wearing regal-black silk robes with wolf heads embroidered into it with silver threads, with the wolf eyes adorned with shiny blue sapphire stones. He had his long raven black hair crowned with a black Onyx crown. He had rows of Silent Cavalries forming two lines from down his dais to the plaza in front where all the masses are gathered. They stood there solemnly with their mighty lances shining as they reflect the light rays throwing terror into the hearts of the masses. My father waited a few minutes in silence to put pressure on the masses who kept alternating gazes between him and the massive statue on top of the pyramid.

There used to be a Harpy statue. The Harpy is a mythical creature in the culture of Essos, whose likeness is used as the symbol of the Ghiscari Empire, as well its colony-cities in Slaver's Bay, where Ghiscari culture survives to this day, harpies are shown as having the head and torso of a woman and the wings, tail, and legs of a bird. Now the harpy statue that was there for as long as anyone can remember is nowhere to be found and instead, there is a Great Wolf Statue that one wonders how is it standing still in the Apex despite its sheer massive size. The Wolf was a monstrosity made of White Platinum cast into the shape of a huge, 50 feet long, around 15 m, and 30 feet high, howling wolf.

My father took out his huge claymore Frostmourne, it had a shiny dark edge siphoning the light, proving its authenticity as Valyrian Steel, and shouted in a loud deep voice "O free people of Meereen, today we rise anew as free men with no more slavery and any of its remnants around. You broke your own chains and regained your freedom and the freedom of your descendants to be born for thousands of years to come."

He took a deep breath and continued "Today I stand before you as Cregan Stark, Prince of the new FREE CITY OF MEMPHIS, it shall be a truly free city and we shall forget the old slaver name of Meereenese and become truly free Memphisi. You shall never be slaves again as long as this city does not fall! This city shall never fall as long as its Silent Knights and Unsullied are not defeated! You will learn crafts, plant crops, and build the city with me to true prosperity. We shall have allies in Lhazar, Vaes Dothrak, and even in Westeros and we shall rise as the greatest Free City and prove that slavery was the greatest tragedy since the fall of Valyria."

"Everyone said that slaves are worthless and they can only do menial labor for eternity, however, centuries ago a group of slaves fled to the far northwest and established Braavos the greatest Free City nowadays. This Prince believes you can be much better than the old Bravoosi freed slaves and with you, we shall rebuild this city into a Golden Blessed city that everyone in the four continents will envy you and will wish to be Memphisi like you. Now FEAST!! The Lesser Pyramids across the city will provide meat and mead so feast through the night O Great Memphisi men and women"

I have to say the old man has a knack for public speaking. I looked at him proudly as he fired the audience with a few phrases while also indirectly reminding them how we freed them and that their prosperity depended on our existence as rulers of the city. He also guaranteed them a new resplendent future of a free and flourishing life. We also tried to erase all traces of the past regime so we changed the identity and name of this city and its people to bring forth a new chapter and quell any thoughts of attachment to Meereen, the Slavers, or the Ghiscari rulers. I convinced my father to name it Memphis, by saying I saw it in my green dreams to choose this name. Memphis was a city in Kemet, ancient Egypt, and it served as the capital of the first nome, region, of Lower Egypt that was known as mḥw, a hieroglyphic word for North. I thought it would be a nice guilty pleasure to be the only one who knows it. I think I just yearned for anything familiar in this strange world.

We left the masses and went back to the Great Pyramid. The Pyramid was a monstrous building for Planetos standards, I was not impressed at all but others were and they had every right to. It is a massive structure that serves as the administrative center of Meereen. It is 800 feet tall, 244 meters, from its huge square base to the lofty apex. The foundations of the pyramid are massive and thick, supporting the weight of the huge structure overhead. The interior walls are three times thicker than any castle's curtain walls. The servant's steps are the quickest way up and down the pyramid. These narrow, steep, and straight stairs are hidden within the thick brick walls. The walls in the heart of the pyramid are eight feet thick. The outer walls are thirty feet thick (9.14 meters); they muffle the tumult of the streets and keep the heat outside. Consequently, it is cool and dim within.

The Great Pyramid boasts three-and-thirty levels, a number sacred to the Gods of Ghis. Underneath the pyramid are vaults, dungeons, and torture chambers. On the ground level stables, stalls, and storerooms are located. The stables in the western walls hold horses, mules, and donkeys, while the stables in the eastern walls hold elephants. On the second level, the armory is located, and a training hall on the third. On the thirty-second floor, the splendorous Great Hall is one level below the royal chambers, down a broad marble stair. It is an echoing, high-ceilinged room with tiles and walls of purple marble. Tall candles burn amongst the purple marble pillars, Unsullied stand with their backs to the pillars. On a high dais sits a plain ebony bench that I made the throne, having broken up the previous throne of gilded wood carved in the shape of a harpy. In the lofty apex of the pyramid on the highest step, the royal chambers are surrounded by greenery and fragrant pools. My father just summoned me to the Great Hall, I am unaware though of the reason for this summon.
