#Chapter5
---Nyx, the good person-02
That little punk would probably make a big fuss over this, playing the role of the big brother when he clearly was two years younger than her. But if Owen tried to lecture her, Nyx could always start collecting his debts. Last time she had to drive his very pregnant Lucy to the doctor for her monthly check-up and she had to wait outside, sitting right beside a woman who stared at her for like five minutes and then walked to her with very slow steps. Once she was close enough to Nyx, the woman grabbed her hand and whispered to her that her water broke. SHE WAS GIVING BIRTH RIGHT THERE, IN FRONT OF HER! Poor Nyx was traumatized for a month.
So, now, dear brother could compensate her for going through all that. She was being a good sister by giving him such a chance.
/"Owen.../" Her voice dragged the /"e/" for a bit too long when her brother answered her call, her voice not showing the tiniest bit of how she really felt inside.
All of a sudden, a lot of noise was heard from Owen’s side. Nyx could hear her mother yelling, cupboards slamming shut, her aunt raising her voice and little children crying.
/"Where are you, you trash can?/" Owen's voice was louder than Nyx expected, and she really couldn't think of anything she might have done to get him so angry so early in the morning. Maybe he found out she ate the last pudding in the fridge three years ago. Who knows? /"Where the fuck are you? Mom has been going nuts for an hour now./"
Oh... that... The famous monthly lunch…
The Letti family had a long tradition going on, and that was... family lunches... The oldest, in this case, Nyx's grandfather Walter, would be the host and invite all his children with their spouses and kids in his house. This happened every first Saturday of every month, and it was simply a nightmare. Nyx hated it.
Walter really loved all his children and wanted to at least have that bit of time every month to spend with them since all of them were busy with their jobs and families. Nyx didn't have anything against this. Even though she was pissed at her grandfather for kicking her out of his company, she really loved him a lot and would visit him often. She knew how lonely her grandfather could get. This was more the case after her grandmother died a few years ago.
Her problem was that these family gatherings were too stressful.
The reason why?
Because she had to fake being nice most of the time. And she didn’t fit in at all. Ever since she was young, she and her brother would be left out whenever the cousins got together to have fun or simply hang out. As a result, the two of them weren’t as close to them as they were to each other. This also meant that any conversation she tried to have with them felt too dry, and having to always take the initiative to start the conversation drained her psychologically.
Things weren’t any better with her aunts and uncles. Whenever Nyx tried to say anything, they would either interrupt her, not letting her finish talking, or her mother would glare at her across the room to keep her mouth shut because, apparently, her opinions weren’t that welcome.
Having to stay still in a corner of the room where everyone could see her being there but not having any right to say anything was too much even for Nyx.
Walter was aware of that, so he didn't force Nyx to come to these gatherings. After all, his dear granddaughter visited her on her own, without having him ask her to go see him. However, this time was different.
This time her mother was forcing her to go. The reason behind this was because Elinor wanted her daughter to talk things out with Walter so she could get her ass back to work! And because she wanted to make sure Nyx ate well during lunch so she wouldn't wolf down the food in front of her date and scare her poor guy away because she has seen her daughter eat. And it's terrifying.
If she thinks that I'm going to sit down in a restaurant or whatever and order a salad, she must be on crack. I may not come out of the date with a potential boyfriend, but I sure as hell will come out with my stomach full.
/"Oh my God, I'm so sorry, I seriously forgot./"
Hand over the Oscar.
Technically speaking, Nyx really did forget. It's just that she made sure she would forget. But Owen wouldn't buy it. He knew his sister too well.
/"Do l look like I was born yesterday?/" Owen growled through the phone. Nyx had to move the phone away from her ear to save it from going deaf. She actually needed them for a few more years.
/"Well, taking into consideration the fact that you still sleep with the light on.../"
/"Just shut up and come here already./"
/"Okay, okay. Chill! I will be there in an hour. But first, I need you to do something for me./"
/"I'm listening./" Owen said sounding so done with her, but Nyx knew he was smirking, most likely thinking of what he would ask in return.
This jerk.
I'm already so miserable, and all he can think about is how to use me. (ಥ﹏ಥ)
/"I need you to find where this guy works./" Nyx bit her lip nervously after saying that.
/"Sure. Which guy?/"
Owen didn’t get any answer for a while. He even had to move the phone away from his ear to check if he had accidentally hung up, but that wasn’t the case. When he brought the phone back to his ear, he heard Nyx’s voice sounding a bit hoarse.
The car was Neil’s, so technically she should be asking about Neil’s whereabouts, but Nyx pretended to be have turned silly for a moment, muttering the wrong name. /"James… Where James works…/"
