Chapter 17 - The Deal

Aiden did not have the strength to argue. He stood up and glanced at Sophia again. After confirming that she was fine, he followed Professor Martin out of the room.

As the distance widened, the sense of weightlessness gradually weakened, confusing Aiden.

"Why would Sophia's recovery of her mental strength affect her surroundings so much?"

"How would I know?" Professor Martin shrugged and sighed.

"The talents at the top of the ability sequence are all extremely terrifying. I'm not surprised at such levels."

Aiden nodded. He didn't think too much about it. As long as Sophia wasn't in danger, it was fine. After all, she was injured saving him. If anything happened, he would never be able to forgive himself.

To prevent others from discovering Sophia's abnormality, the two simply sat outside the door. Aiden looked at Professor Martin, who was holding a pile of bottles and bottles and studying them. Aiden asked curiously, "Professor Martin, what awakened you?"

Professor Martin stopped what he was doing and looked up hesitatingly.

Seeing this, Aiden quickly said, "If there's anything inconvenient, you can pretend I didn't say anything."

"No, nothing." Professor Martin shook his head.

"My awakening is due to my wife. She is a Fool."

"Wife?!" Aiden was stunned. He looked at Professor Martin with a hint of pity.

It was already unacceptable that a person he loved suddenly turned into a beast. It was hard for him to imagine how Professor Martin must have felt when he found out that his wife was one.

Sensing his gaze, Professor Martin laughed self-deprecatingly. "You didn't expect this, did you? Actually, I didn't expect it either. I didn't believe it the day I discovered that my wife was a beast, but when the truth was in front of me, and no matter how much I lied to myself, I had to accept it."

Aiden comforted him, but he quickly realized the crux of the problem.

"If she is a Fool, why do you still…?" Aidan trailed off, but the implication was clear. With Professor Martin's skill, it would be easy enough to take care of a Fool.

Professor Martin smiled bitterly and shook his head. He did not answer. Instead, he said leisurely, "I'm sure you already know the ratio of one in a hundred thousand. You should know how bad your situation is."

Aiden didn't know why he suddenly said this, but he nodded.

Professor Martin sighed and stared at the moon in the sky. His tone was bleak and sorrowful.

"We, or rather, all Awakened's, are destined to be abandoned by the world from the moment they awaken."

"In that case, why should we care if it's a human or a beast sleeping beside us?"

Aiden fell silent. He wanted to argue, but after carefully savoring the professor's words, he found himself unable to.

With a ratio of 1 in 100,000, were humans really still the masters of the world?

The professor seemed to be right. As long as he could survive, what did it matter if the person beside him was a human or a beast? In other words, as long as he was happy, what did it matter if he knew the truth?

For a moment, Aiden was lost.

The two of them did not speak and sat there until dawn.

"Where is this…" A moan came from the room. Sophia was awake.

Aiden, who was by then a little sleepy, instantly perked up when he heard the sounds in the house. He got up and rushed into the house.

In the room, Sophia was sitting on the bed. Her face had returned to normal. She was rubbing her eyes sleepily.

"Sophia, are… are you okay?"

Aiden hurriedly stepped forward to ask. Sophia stared at him blankly. After some time, she suddenly came back to her senses and said in surprise, "Aiden? Weren't we killed by ferocious beasts? Where is this? Is this heaven?"

"Of course not…"

Aiden was about to explain when Professor Martin followed him in. He smiled bitterly at Sophia's words.

"Young lady, you're thinking too much. If this is heaven, then hell might be happier than where we are."

Sophia immediately sat up and stared at him warily.

"Don't be nervous. We're on the same side." Professor Martin raised his hand and smiled.

Sophia naturally did not believe him. She turned to look at Aiden, who nodded gently and whispered, "Professor Martin saved us. He is also an Awakened."

Hearing his words, Sophia let down her guard a little. Then, Aiden roughly told her what happened after she fainted. When she heard him say that Professor Martin had seen the Sequence Table, her eyes immediately lit up.

"Come on, tell me!"

Her reaction was so great that even Aiden was startled. When he came back to his senses, he couldn't help but be puzzled.

"Do you care so much about the Table?"

"I have my reasons." Sophia wasn't going to say more. She stared hard at Professor Martin.

"Give it to me."

"It's not impossible to tell you." Professor Martin did not care about her attitude at all and smiled faintly.

"You have a condition?" Aiden was keenly aware of the meaning behind the other party's words.

"Yes, as long as you two do me a favor, I can tell you all the talents I know."

A trace of reluctance flashed across Professor Martin's eyes, quickly replaced by a look of determination. He was afraid that Aiden and the others would not agree, so he added, "Not only that, but if there are any problems in the future if I can help, I will do my best to help."

"What is it?" Sophia asked anxiously.

Professor Martin looked at the two of them with a bitter expression.

"Help me… kill my wife."
