Chapter 18 - Nervous Confrontation

"Help me… kill my wife…"

Aiden was stunned. For a moment, he thought that he had misheard. He quickly asked, "Wh-what?"

"You didn't hear wrongly." Professor Martin's eyes were dark. "I want you to help me kill my wife. As long as you're willing, I'll give you the Ability Sequence."

This time, Aiden was dumbfounded. When he was talking to Professor Martin earlier, he seemed to express the idea that he wanted to coexist with the beasts. But now?

"May I ask why?"

Professor Martin was silent for a long time before muttering, "If I'm not wrong, my wife may have guessed my identity. Recently, her behavior has been a little abnormal. From time to time, she would say strange things to test me. I'm worried…"

"Then why didn't you do it yourself?" Sophia tilted her head and looked at him. "With your ability, it should be easy to kill someone silently."

Aiden pulled her arm gently, signaling her to stop talking.

Sophia might not understand, but he knew very well that Professor Martin had true feelings for his wife.

It was like like that with him and his parents. If someone told him that his parents were vicious beasts, Aiden would not be able to do anything to them.

However, reality was cruel. If a beast discovered an Awakened's identity, he would have had to kill the beast if he wanted to live. Even if the beast was the person closest to him.

"Hehe, I won't say the specific reason. You just have to tell me if you're willing." Professor Martin spread his hands. "The conditions are the same as before. The Sequence Table and my greatest ability help."

Sophia did not say anything, but it was obvious that she was tempted. Her eyes revealed her thoughts.

After a long time, Sophia suddenly burst out laughing. Her big eyes narrowed into slits, making her look like a child who had secretly eaten candy.

"Professor Martin, right? I'm sure you still don't know what my ability is, right?" Sophia's eyes flickered.

"If I want to, no one can hold back any secrets from me."

Aiden wanted to persuade him. After all, they were all Awakened. There was no need for them to have a conflict over a so-called Sequence list. Moreover, Professor Martin was their savior.

However, Aiden soon noticed that the smile on Sophia's face froze and slowly disappeared. Then, her expression became extremely solemn.

"What happened?"

Sophia did not say anything. She continued to stare at Professor Martin, who had an unfathomable smile on his face.

The two of them were in a deadlock. Just as Aiden was about to step forward to dissuade him, Professor Martin said leisurely, "Don't waste your energy. Your ability may be very strong, but for now, it's probably a little difficult to forcibly read my memory."

Aiden was stunned for a moment before he sucked in a breath of cold air.

He, he actually blocked Sophia's ability?

Aiden had personally experienced the feeling of having his memories read. There was no way to resist at all, but now it seemed that Professor Martin was not afraid at all.

"Why?" The light in Sophia's eyes dimmed as she questioned unwillingly.

"Why is your memory blank?"

'Blank?'

Aiden looked at Professor Martin in surprise. The latter smiled and took out a glass bottle with some red liquid inside.

"This is a potion I made at the last minute. It can affect my brain waves. Of course, while blocking you, I will also be affected a little, but it's much better than having my memory read."

"Ad hoc production?" Sophia frowned. "You've been guarding against me?"

"Sort of." Professor Martin shrugged. "Your mental strength is too terrifying. Although we're all Awakened, we still have to be vigilant."

Sophia said nothing more. There was nothing she could do against such an opponent.

Seeing this, Aiden quickly stepped forward to mediate. "There's no need to be so nervous. Why don't we listen to Professor Martin's conditions first? It might be easy."

His idea was very simple. Since Professor Martin had said that the mission was easy and there was important information that they would get, he might as well agree first. It would not be too late to go back on his word if it did not work.

Sophia Harry glared at Aiden, but she did not object. For her, there was no guilt in killing a beast. It was just that…

Sophia raised her head and looked directly at Professor Martin. "My talent is not suitable for killing without making a sound."

This meant that she had agreed to Professor Martin's suggestion.

Professor Martin was stunned. He smiled bitterly and said, "Don't worry about that."

As he spoke, he took out a bottle of transparent liquid and shook it in his hand.

"This is the potion I concocted. It can silently kill the target."

Sophia took the potion in her hand without even looking at it.

"Smart people." Professor Martin snapped his fingers and took a note and pen from his suit pocket. He wrote a note and handed them a room card.

"At six o'clock tonight, go to this place and change into the clothes in the room. I'll call you to inform you of the specific actions."

"Can't you tell me now?" Aiden was a little impatient. The other party's secretive manner made him wary of unexpected risks in this operation.

"Hehe, don't blame me for being careful. After all, I'm the same as you guys. I can't completely trust you guys. Living in this kind of hell, I can only try my best to survive."

Professor Martin smiled. There was a hint of bitterness in his smile.

Sophia didn't say anything. She took the note and put it in the pocket of her shorts.

"Alright, once it's done, I'll contact you." Professor Martin turned and left the room. Before he left, he had a thought. He turned and smiled at them. "Don't go to class this morning. Go back and have a good sleep. Don't affect your plans for the night."

After he left, Aiden and Sophia Harry agreed on a time and place to meet. Then Aiden went home alone.

Looking at his familiar home, Aiden's heart was filled with complicated emotions. His conversation with Professor Martin and Sophia had changed his outlook greatly in just two days.

A one in a hundred thousand ratio. He knew exactly what that meant.

There was no concrete evidence but if his parents were Awakened, why would they watch their son date a beast?

If they were not Awakened ones…

Aiden didn't dare to think about it anymore. Even though he yearned for his family to be human, he knew very well that he had to be rational!

If he had chosen a Fool like the fast-food restaurant owner instead of Lily, he could have continued to live ignorantly. That itself might have been a blessing.

It was not scary for a person to live in a fake dream world. What was scary was when he suddenly woke up one day.

However, reality was not a fairytale world. There were not so many ifs, nor was there a chance to do it all over again.

Aiden had awakened. There were only two choices for him.

They would either live their lives in a daze and fear, only to be discovered by ferocious beasts one day and torn to pieces and eaten.

Or they could either take the initiative to search for the truth of the world and the way to survive.

Advancing and retreating were both abysses.
