Chapter 34 - A solid group

The next morning, Mortis and his new group set out for the dungeon. In this group, it quickly became clear that everything was different here. The members communicated much more with each other. From the first contact with enemies, the tank gave clear instructions on who to attack, and the healer announced when he would heal or deal damage. Burrack explained to Marina exactly when to use her rain of ice to slow down enemies and deal damage. Mortis was impressed with the coordination in the group. Even if it was just small elementals launching attacks, the tank was able to get much more out of Marina than if she had gone into the dungeon alone.

Marina was also excited. She quickly realized that a well-managed tank who gave clear instructions and paid attention to everything was far more effective than someone who just defended herself and hoped everything would go well.

Mortis mainly used slash attacks when the birds were around. Actually, he had an ability he could use, but he hesitated for fear that Marina would realize he had sent the ghost. Marina, for her part, did considerable damage, however, and with the slowdown, even the melee fighters were able to get successful hits.

After a few floors and a tower climb, as well as many smaller enemies, they finally faced the intermediate boss: a large black raven that immediately rushed at them upon entering the room.

The raven attacked the tank with its beak, but the tank blocked all attacks with its shield. Then the tank led the damage dealers (DDs) and the healer to the right to get behind the boss. This way they could attack more effectively.

After a few hits, the boss rose up, screeched loudly, and released a black mist that enveloped the entire room and impaired visibility. The group panicked. Burrack shouted, "Can anyone see anything? I can't see anything at all." Mortis yelled, "Tank, turn to your right and keep your shield in front of you."

The Boss flew at high speed, trying to attack Tank and the others from the side and behind. Burrack stood his ground and struck back with his sword. Mortis struck as well, but the Boss was gone as quickly as he had appeared. Now the boss seemed to be aiming for Mortis. Just as the bird was about to rush at him, however, Mortis suddenly disappeared, confusing the Boss. Instead, the boss directed its attack at Burrack.

This game was repeated twice more, but each time the Boss was stopped by the group and punished with blows. The black fog cleared, and the Boss stood farther away, shooting quills at the group. The mage was instructed to give it his all while the melee fighters attacked the boss.

Mortis jumped several times, and the monk used an ability that made green wind swirl around him, making him appear faster and giving the appearance that the projectiles were being directed by him.

After a few more hits, the boss finished its phase. Just as he was about to attack Mortis, the tank jumped in, hit the raven's head, and the bird turned to Burrack to peck out its eyes with its beak. Finally, the raven could no longer withstand the onslaught and was defeated.

A wooden box appeared, which the monk opened. Inside, Mortis found 10 gold and a cloak with strength +2. No one in the group wanted the cloak, so Mortis put it in his ring. The gold was divided among them. A portal appeared and took them out of the dungeon.

In the city, Burrack and the others said goodbye to Mortis and Marina. They had other plans and this city was their home. Since a carriage was not available to take them back until the next day, Mortis and Marina decided to make the most of the time. They explored cemeteries while Marina also sent a message to Baron Francis of Rotermain to announce their stay. In the end, their path led them to Rotermain, where Marina sought shelter and Mortis was determined to rid the land of the corrupt god of death.
