The vigilantes were a hostile group, and Charlotte had to meet with a group of them on her own and almost died. For Vincent to take on the whole vigilantes entirely by himself was absurd. She knew that he was strong, but what if they were also able to bend him to their wills as the young vampires?
"You want to kill them all?" she asked horrified.
"It is better than to sit around idle while they wreak havoc. I still have a job."
"Ah, your job as a cavalier is to protect other vampires?"
"It's more so to do routine checks to see if vampires aren't breaking any rules, so in the end, it is for their safety."
"Then, the rest of the killings you're doing it on your own?"
He nodded, and Charlotte gave him a hesitant smile. She finally felt like she got a better read on him. To her, it seemed that Vincent had a knight complex. The idea brought a bubble of laughter to her mind.
He didn't seem kind on the outside, but he was doing his best to make sure that those around him were safe by volunteering himself in secret. He was telling the truth about him being a loner, especially since doing all of that work alone was quite dangerous.
Vincent didn't trust anyone, and it suddenly became blatantly clear to her that he didn't trust his household staff either which was why the staff seemed to be tip-toeing around her as well.
She cocked her head to the side and took in his handsome face. She was curious to a fault, and her mother often chided that it was going to be her death of her. It had finally come to a time that it would actually pose a problem.
"Why don't you extend your help to other vampires?" she tentatively asked.
"I don't need it," he replied easily while she noticed anger come to light in his eyes.
She bit her lip. "Vincent. Are vampires normally lonely creatures?"
"Contrary to what you would think, vampires, tend to do whatever pleases them and are very sociable. They blend in with the world and take up whatever is pleasurable to make the time fly by."
She voiced the thought that was on her mind for a while. "Then... why are you alone?"
Vincent crossed his arms. "Are we getting into the best friend stage?"
Charlotte laughed. "Yes, do you want to braid hair next?"
Vincent huffed out a breath. "I am half."
"Half of what?"
"Keep up, Charlotte. I am a half-vampire."
Her mouth dropped open into an o. "What really?"
"My mother was human. This was her mansion outside the city walls which was built by my pureblood father."
"Is it even possible to have a human mother?"
"It is. It is not popular since vampires want to keep their bloodlines pure."
"Is that why the vampires are off-put by you?"
"Yes and no. They are weary of my background, and I hate their kind of entertainment so it goes both ways."
Charlotte grimaced. "Would I want to know their kind of entertainment?"
He smirked. "No, but I'm sure you're curious."
Charlotte placed her chin in her hand and changed the subject. "The reason why you have following me around from afar was that vigilantes had their eyes on me, correct?"
"Yes. I thought they would lose interest if I stayed back, but then you called for me."
Charlotte sighed. "Your efforts went down the drain."
Vincent suddenly went silent and glanced out the window for a moment. He turned back to her with a golden rim to his eyes, as his fangs elongated. Charlotte froze, and she eyed the furniture behind her. She didn't do anything to set him off, and she wasn't freshly bleeding since he was fine around her bullet wound earlier.
"Vincent..."
He pressed a hand to his face. "Charlotte. Leave the room."
"Are you okay?"
"Charlotte!"
Charlotte didn't have to think twice when she ran from the chair and tumbled when Vincent flipped her over onto one of the couches. Her breath left her lungs, and she laid her hands against his chest to try and push him away. She met his eyes while their breaths mixed together. His forehead pressed onto hers and tipped her head back exposing her neck.
"I'm going to kill Sebastian," he growled.
"What's wrong?"
He raked his teeth along the column of her neck making her let out a shuddered gasp. "Bloodlust..."
Her heart was pounding erratically making her breasts threaten to spill out over the dress. She ran a hand down his hair, trying to calm him. "Let me out of the room first."
Vincent nuzzled into her shoulder and his lower body came to align with hers. She could feel his erection poking her, and she gawked when she realized how hung he was. He was huge! It wasn't going to fit. Charlotte squeezed his back when he started to lick the swell of the breasts that were above the neckline of her dress.
"Wait... Vincent."
"Charlotte," he whispered, as he licked the shell of her ear eliciting a shiver.
