Dances aren’t my thing

After going home, life had settled down. I started feeling more like myself. It had to do with Val. Everything was fine until I saw Homecoming posters plastered on the school’s walls. God, I loathed school dances. I always got dragged to one and appeared awkward around people.
Last year was horrible. I reasoned that dancing with my ex would be more enjoyable. As my life spiraled downward, things deteriorated. The thought caused my skin to crawl.
/"It sounds like a magical moment,/" said a voice.
I turned to see Val standing next to me with a smirk.
/"We’ll go since it’s our senior year./"
She smiled.
/"Yeah, I doubt it./"
I left.
She caught up with me.
/"What about attending the dance with the funniest girl?/"
/"Dances aren’t my style./"
