Kai waved his hand in the air trying to get his attention. "Narcen!" he yelled out.
The lizardman turned his head in Kai's direction, yellow-slitted pupils staring right at him, and his face brightened up immediately.
"Kai!?" Narcen cried. "Im so glad that thing didn't get you." The setting sun shone off his green scales. The rain from the morning was long gone.
"Oh yeah?" Kai mused. "A lizardman worrying for a human?"
Narcen made a face at him. "I'm not stupid and I know you're an ally."
Kai patted his back and chuckled. "Nah, I'm just kidding." He looked up to the sky and added, "You returned the fruit safely?"
"Yeah, but was it really worth it to help that merchant?" Narcen replied.
Kai shrugged his shoulders. "Well," he said pointing at the air, "I was bored, and I just though I might as well."
Narcen furrowed his scaled brow in a confused manner. "Don't you regret it even a little? I can see that nasty would on your shoulder."
"I knew I would win, I guess." He said without much thought.
"You didn't look like that when you were fighting that monster," Narcen pointed out. "Plus, I wouldn't get too cocky, this world is a crazy place. We're in a really safe coastal region. If that monster in the forest gave you trouble, imagine what all the terrifying monsters around the continent could do to you!"
They both paused for a second. Kai began to move his lips, about to speak.
"Yeah bu-"
"And think about the monsters of legend!" Narcen interjected. He waved his hands in the sky, his digitigrade legs tensing up. "They are beyond our comprehension!"
Kai indeed understood what he was talking about. The "storm" that he somehow survived wasn't the weather. It was something else.
Some of the lizardman around Kai were beginning to wonder what the commotion was. Kai cleared his throat.
"Listen, I understand your concern." He wiped some sweat off his arm. "But I think I could get really strong with my magic, I just need to train."
"Narcen made a confused expression, throwing his hand out, palm up. "What even is your magic? I really don't understand it."
"Well, you've probably never heard of it," Kai said. "It's called cosmic magic."
Narcen looked up at the waning light of the sky and uttered the name under his breath. "Cosmic magic.." He gave a somewhat amused expression. "Yeah, I've never heard of it. It sounds pretty damn cool though."
Kai nodded. "And it seems to be really powerful too. There are all these things that my book tells me about the magical abilities, like radiation sickness and x-ray radiation. I just don't understand what it means.
Narcen raised his hand, palm facing outward, fingers spread wide, as if trying to halt time itself. "Hold on hold on!" He exclaimed. "First off, book?"
"Yeah I learn my abilities by a book that appears."
Narcen made a confused expression. "Could you show me?"
Kai looked around. "I don't think we should do it in front of all these people. Don't want to give away my secrets. Also I know for sure there are some lizardman who still have malicious thoughts about me over their village being taken over. I don't want them knowing too much about me."
He realized how desperate he sounded.
"I'm sure your fine. We're a more pacifistic tribe," Narcen said, waving his hand. "If you're worried about Karla, nobody will lay a claw on her. Everyone collectively knows what will happen."
"Now," Narcen added. "Let's see this book you're talking about."
"Alright," he sighed. "But let's go at least somewhere that isn't in a totally public space."
Narcen nodded. Together, they went down a few paths and behind a tavern. By then the sun completely set.
Kai cleared his throat and said, "Book, appear before my eyes." He tried to sound somewhat noble in order to not embarrass himself.
Ten seconds in, and nothing happend. Kai winced. There was a silence.
Then, out of the blue the book materialized. Purple stardust embellished it, and Narcen's eyes opened wide.
Just as he was about to tell the book to open up for Narcen to see, a guard came running towards him. The book dissappeared.
How did he know where we are!?
"Sir!" The lizardman said to him. He was quite muscular, wearing armor, and had a visible ability mark on him. Kai remembered from that one other warrior. "The barrier has been broken. We are being invaded!"
"What!?"
