Chapter 91 - Chapter 91 - Interview At Anping First Middle School

"So are you." Han Yichen said, lips upturned. "By the way, I'll be going to Anping First Middle School in a few days. My interview has been scheduled."

"Oh, alright. I won't be having an interview because I'm a resident of City M, only the results of the school-leaving exam. Sigh, I hope my grades are high enough."

"You don't think you did well?"

"Oh, I wasn't really in a good mood that day, but I tried."

Han Yichen stared at him.

"Is it weird that I write exams according to my mood?"

Han Yichen shook his head wordlessly before replying, "No, it makes sense. One's psychological state is an important factor that affects performance —academic or otherwise."

Li Yuchen gave him a thumbs up in appreciation. He wished he had recorded Han Yichen's answer so that he could play it to his dad when next he complained about his fluctuating performance.

Seeing as he had said everything he wanted to say, Han Yichen was about to end the call when Li Yuchen hurriedly stopped him. "I wanted to ask you, when is my Goddess' birthday?"

"Next weekend."

"You're joking right?"

"No, I'm serious."

Li Yuchen wailed dramatically, "I didn't know. And I haven't prepared a present yet."

"It's okay. We will be in country F at that time, so maybe you can get her something then."

"No no, my Goddess is very special, she deserves the best. I have to get her something that will show her how much she means to me. I need to think carefully."

Han Yichen shrugged. "I'll be going now. I need to write my book."

"Alright. You need to solve the mystery for us. How did Yan Mari disappear? And would the bandits be caught soon?" He was referring to Han Yichen's latest novel.

"Read on to find out. Bye."

Li Yuchen pouted. "Don't I deserve some spoilers at least?"

"No."

Li Yuchen: "...."

He gave up. "Alright, talk to you later then."

As soon as the call ended, he went straight to Li Chuanmo's study to gloat. "Dad, I know something you don't."

Li Chuanmo did not raise his head from what he was writing. "What?"

"Did you know that my Goddess' birthday is next weekend?"

"Why do you think we're traveling next week?"

"Dad! You are as clever as a fox!" Li Yuchen was good at appreciating talent.

His father paused and raised his head. "Meaning?"

"Ah, I'm only praising you Dad."

Li Chuanmo continued writing, talking to no person in particular, "I told him to learn proper language skills, but he keeps learning these messy phrases, how infuriating!"

"Dad!" Li Yuchen whined. Why was his dad insulting him?

Li Chuanmo looked up innocently, "What? I was not talking to you.

"Hmph!"

Two days later, it was time for Han Yichen's interview.

As Pei Yueran drove into the school, Han Yichen stared. He had seen pictures online while he was doing his research, but the pictures were not as good as the real deal.

The school was very big. Numerous buildings dotted the landscape, painted in the school colors —white and burnt orange. Han Yichen assumed that they housed the classes and administrative offices.

He could also see tall complexes in the distance, designed to look like small apartment buildings. Those were probably the dormitories.

The environment was very serene. Flowers and plants dotted the school premises and were used as borders. Each building had a different kind of flower growing around it as well, and at first sight, it made the school look bright, giving a burst of energy to the onlooker.

Being the oldest middle school in City M, it occupied a dominant spot amongst other secondary schools and was known to be very difficult to get into.

Han Yichen got an interview scheduled so easily because of his mother's connection to the Li Conglomerate, and more importantly, because of his excellent transcripts.

It was because of his good grades that the principal made an exception and scheduled an interview date, even though the results for the school-leaving exam were not out yet. It was also why he opted to interview him personally.

They were directed to the principal's office by the security guard after Pei Yueran explained their purpose for coming.

"Come in." Principal Shen said in response to a knock. He was a middle-aged man with full black hair and a jaunty air about him.

He stood up and shook hands with Pei Yueran. "Ms Pei right? You're welcome."

"Thank you Principal Shen. It's nice to meet you", she said, giving him her name card. He also gave her his in exchange.

Shifting his gaze, he looked at Han Yichen, "Is this the student?"

"Good day sir. My name is Han Yichen. Nice to meet you."

Principal Shen smiled at him. At first glance, he could see that the young boy had a scholarly air around him. He was neither servile nor overbearing. Principal Shen nodded to himself. He then asked Pei Yueran to excuse them.

The interview had begun.

When asked why he chose Anping First Middle School, Han Yichen gave a number of reasons, citing evidence of historical feats the school had achieved and their current prestigiousness.

In other words, he flattered the principal without using flattery and praised the school to high heavens without sounding vulgar. His literary talent was on full display, and Principal Shen was dazzled.

He continued to ask him other questions, such as what he liked about City M, his expectations for the school and his opinion about student leadership. He also asked him questions about his hobbies and interests.

The more answers he gave, the more impressed Principal Shen became. For a boy his age, Han Yichen was very calm and collected. He had already decided to grant him admission on the spot, regardless of his school-leaving exam results.

The admission letter could only be given after the results were out though, but he knew he would be reserving one spot.

In a moment of genuine curiosity, he wondered how Han Yichen had even heard about their school, and he didn't hesitate to ask.

Han Yichen replied truthfully. "Actually, I was searching for a school that offered full scholarships when I came across this school. I was impressed by the high standards and pristine repute. My mother also did her research and was in agreement with me."

Oh, so that was it. Based on his transcripts and the interview, he indeed deserved it. But there was a little problem.

"You're right, we do offer full scholarships to very outstanding students or those in special circumstances. Unfortunately, this opportunity is reserved mainly for students who are residents of City M."
