Chapter 14 - Episode 13

There are three steps to damnation; sin, guilt and another sin.

The police had been on Cyril's tail for a few days now and he had been shrewd in his movements, doing all his best to avoid them. The detective on the case though was a man of great wit, bright and even more canny. He had graduated from the university of Ibadan as a behavioural psychologists before enrolling into the Police academy and passing out as one of the best in his class. He was one not to be messed with.

He had obtained a fingerprint sample from the door handle at Cyril's house, the print was scanned on the NIN database to retrieve some vital information about him, especially his birth certificate and certificate of origin. This would help narrow down to know more about him, his family background, his relatives and where he comes from.

After about 20 minutes the results came back and then the search began. The detective and a team of policemen went back to the hotel to get the gate man's statement once more.

At the hotel the gate man told them exactly what he had said the last time he was questioned.

"He had told me his girlfriend was sick and needed to be taken to the hospital urgently. I helped them carry the lady into the car his friend had brought with him. I opened the gate for them and they left."

"Sir which way did they go after exiting the premises."

"They turned left and drove off and that's all I know."

"Thank you so much" the detective said.

He googled once more on the Internet the number of hospitals that were around that area. The results said there were two hospitals and the closest one was 36 kilometres away; about an hour drive.

Eket was not a town known for so much violence and evil, it was a quiet and a peaceful neighbourhood. Often though some hoodlums who had no clear perspective of their carnal self would seek to disturb the quiet by invading into the homes of residents. Unbeknownst to the residence though, a more excellent evil lingered placidly.

Cyril had a good start for his new task, things had gone so smoothly and he was starting to enjoy it. With the help of Nonso's friends he had been able to copulate with 5 girls. Some nights they visited night clubs and other nights the streets was their playground. He didn't do much of the talking, Nonso's friends were the 'talkmen', all the ladies needed was a little 'gingering - if you know what I mean. Nonetheless things had happened even faster than he imagined. He'd take them to a hotel and had them drugged. A sip or two would knock them out flat and then it was time for work. He did exactly as was instructed by the Oracle - copulate with them, use a red kerchief to wipe their genitalia and take their underwear.

Nonso was back home with his family once again, his mother was happy when a motorbike drove into the compound and her son appeared from behind the rider.

She was extremely elated at his return, she never thought she would be seeing him that soon.

She took him inside, prepared a good meal and had it served to him.

Nonso was miserable, sorrow engulfed his heart. He did not want to do what was asked of him but he knew the repercussions, it was too late to cower. The instructions had been 'as clear as daylight'.

It was 10:45 pm, he had not been able to sleep. He was waiting for the right opportunity, he got up from his bed and walked out of the room. He tiptoed towards the room, squeezed the door handle and the door swung open. He walked towards the bed and tapped Nkechi - his youngest sister - on her shoulder.

She was startled, she looked up and there was her brother.

"Brother, why aren't you sleeping?" She asked.

"I need you to come help me, I think I may have lost my wallet, come and help me look for it."

She got down from her bed and followed as he led the way. Outside, she innocently went about the compound searching for a lost wallet. There was a club right next to the wall that was used to fence the building. He picked it up, walked to where she was and - thud - she fell to ground without making a single sound.

Someone once said " never kill a man - or woman - who didn't speak."

He picked her up from the ground, placed her on his shoulder and exited the compound. There was a thick bush not to far from the compound. He took her there, placed her on the ground and it was time to work.
