The tunnels were dark and confusing, and there was no doubt that if any of us had stumbled down here, without Roger to guide us, we would be lost within moments. It was a scary thought. But also a little comforting.
If the tunnels looked so confusing that I couldn’t even place where I was, or where I was being taken, then there was more than a good chance that Hawke’s soldiers would get lost down here, too. That they would never be able to find us. If they even followed us this far.
“We had no idea that you were still alive,” Roger murmured softly as he led us through the tunnels with confidence. He barely looked where he was going, turning almost on instinct. “We hadn’t known that there was anything left to keep fighting for.”
Even in the darkness, I saw Erik’s lips pressed into a thin line. I knew at that moment that he thought that even if he had died, there would have been plenty to fight for. The resistance didn’t live and die with Erik. It was greater than that.
