Chapter 1 - The Origin Of A Hero

Leonard Ezekiel Ajax always knew he was different from ordinary people. Even as a kid he saw things differently, and processed things differently than average people. His parents and the people around him told him he was a genius. He was smarter, stronger, and faster than a kid his age has any right to be, even outclassing most adults he came across. Luckily Leonard was a kind, brave, courageous, and just, kid. His parents made him realize early on that right from wrong and that because of his uniqueness he has a responsibility and a duty to use it for good to make the right choices.

And he did exactly that, he would help around wherever he could, protect the weak from the strong.

He would always surround himself with books learning everything he can because he and his family were always on the move, so he was homeschooled and self-taught in everything he knew. If he wasn't reading and learning from books, he would spend time watching his parent and the other people practicing their acts for the circus. He would mostly just watch his parent's acrobatic performances.

After a lot of convincing and begging his parents taught him their tricks when he turned 10 and he was a natural acrobatic, performing complex maneuvers with ease. His parents were shocked, amazed, and proud of him. They fell into a routine of Leonard reading and being taught most of the day and then practicing his acrobatics.

Everything was great, he was happy with the life he had.....But like all good things it didn't last for long....Everything changed when they had a show in New York and his life changed forever.

[New York - 8 August 2003]

{The night before his life changed was like any other.}

"Good thing you're not this slow in the 'Ring', Raymond--They'd have to cut the other acts!" A 13-year-old Leonard teases his friend as they run on top of a moving train. Raymond smirks and says "Keep talking trapeze boy and it's gonna be you--", "Sorry can't hear you from all the way up here!" Leonard exclaims as he front-flips off the side of the train, with Raymond following right behind him, and they both land in a crouch position next to each other grinning. "Oh yeah!" Raymond shouts in excitement.

{And by 'any other' what that means is...totally average. After all parkour train racing had become a favorite game of the two friends. The trick was to keep moving.}

Leonard front handsprings across the front of another train, with Raymon doing a vault into a front flip landing in front of Leonard and taking the lead. "Ha!" He cheers running ahead, Leonard just smirks running after him.

{Always looking forward. Never back. Reading your surroundings...and other people.}

"Stop!" A security guard shouts baton in hand holding out his hand to stop. Leonard looks at the guard taking in his posture and noticing that the guard has his body weight leaned forward and is unbalanced. He notices an oncoming train and immediately looks at Raymond knowing what he is about to do and yells "Raymond! Wait!,".

{Of course, there was a reason why Leonard usually wins.}

Raymond jumps forward over the guard using his head as a stand pushing him over onto the train tracks and flipping over to safety. "No!" Leonard gasps in shock seeing the oncoming train and launches at the guard tackling him over the tracks and to safety landing next to Raymond. "Whoa!" Raymond exclaims in shock seeing the two.

{Raymond wasn't great at the reading part.}

"Yuh-you...You're in big trouble kid," The guard says still shaken from the close call and grabbing a hold of Leonard who looks at him wide-eyed.

[Later]

"It should go without saying you're grounded," Leonard's Mom says frowning with her hands on her hips, dressed in her performance costume. Leonard bows his head in shame. "But let me say it anyway, you're grounded. indefinitely," She sighs in disappointment. Leonard's Dad also dressed in his performance costume scowls at him, points his finger and asks "Do you have anything you want to say?"

"And congratulations, Leo, it's not every mother who celebrates her birthday in a police station. So, thank you for that," His Mom says sarcastically shaking her head. Leonard sighs and fiddles with his fingers anxiously and says "I'm sorry Mom, but the guard isn't pressing charges and I've apologized like a hundred times. I don't know why you guys are making such a big de--".

His Dad cuts him off glaringly and rebukes "Because you don't get to run around doing whatever you want and ignoring the things you don't want to deal with, Leo". His Dad sighs and scolds him further "I have told you time and again. Life doesn't work like that! People have to be responsible for their actions. You're a smart kid, but you can't always be moving forward, no matter how much you want to be." His Dad ends his scolding sighing tiredly and walks to the door of their trailer, and says before walking out "And give your Mother her real present."

His Mom looks at his Dad confused and asks "My what?". Leonard looks up sheepishly at his Mom scratching his neck nervously "Oh. Right. I know how much you love Robins...Mom" Leonard takes out a gold bracelet with two Robins engraved on it. "...So I made sure it had two of them. Happy Birthday," He says smiling and hands her the bracelet.

"Oh. Leo...it's beautiful," She says smiling softly at him and putting it on. She hugs him and says "Robins from My Robin...Thank you.". She steps back ruffling his hair a bit and smirks "But you're still grounded,". She walks out of the trailer leaving a sulking Leonard behind.

{To this day, that moment stands out in his mind crystal clear. Pristine. Even though what happened after...}

Leonard after a few minutes of sulking decided to go for a short walk to clear his mind from the day's events before the show starts and watch his parents and the other acts perform. He puts on his jacket for protection against the cold night. He exits the trailer locks it and wanders around aimlessly.

{...Is only fragments.}

He stops behind a fence after he hears two voices arguing and decides to eavesdrop. "What I'm saying is, if you want to avoid accidents, Haly..." A man in a black cap and brown jacket threatens Haly pushing him a little. He grabs onto his collar and hisses menacingly "...You'll take the necessary precautions.". Haly holds up his hands in surrender and says placatingly "Okay, okay Tony,".

{Snapshots}

Leonard walks away after eavesdropping and heads toward the Big Top, to wait for the show and acts to start.

Leonard stands cheering and clapping hands as his parents perform their act tossing each other through the air and catching each other, swinging on the bars performing flashy flips and twirls.

{Disjointed}

He watches as his parents prepare for their final act, they swing and catch each other as planned but on the final turn, his Mom flies through the air ready to be caught by his Dad...but the rope of the bar snaps. Leonard watches in horror and screams in despair, tears in his eyes.

{All frozen in time.}

Everyone gasps in horror as they watch the two performers fall to their deaths. His Mom reaches out for his Dad and his Dad reaches out for his Mom but not reaching each other.

{But connected.}

Leonard pushes through the crowd of people trying to get to the bodies of his now-dead parents but is caught by one of his parent's friends and held back as he cries and shouts at them to let him go to which they just hold on tighter to him whispering words of comfort to him.

{But the moment everything really changed...}

Leonard picks up his Mom's bracelet that's covered in blood and cries holding onto it tightly. He looks up, when hears two police officers talking about the ropes being sabotaged before the show started and that a man named Tony Zukko was apparently responsible for it when he didn't get paid his so-called 'protection fees'.

{...Didn't happen until later.}

[Days Later]

"The most important thing to remember, Detective Goodman..." A Child Psychiatrist says to the Detective that decided to look after Leonard while he is at the orphanage. The Psychiatrist looks towards the open door of Leonard's room where he seems to be playing games on a computer and says "...Is that Leo already blames himself for what happened. For not speaking up about what he saw.".

She sighs and looks back to the Detective and says softly "The last thing we want to do is push him to start dealing with this before he's ready. Having said that he's doing well."

"Granted he spends most of his time playing computer games". It shows Leonard sitting in his room researching, details and anything he can find on Tony Zucco and his parents' case.

"...Or reading...But considering everything he's been through...I'd say he's already adjusting."

At night time Leonard sneaks out of a window at the orphanage, dressed in a red hoodie, black fingerless MMA gloves, black with white striped track pants, and black sneakers.

He runs across a roof ledge side flips across to another building onto the side of a chimney pushes off and lands running on the roof.

{The first few nights, he wasn't sure what was going to happen. He just knew he had to be the one to find Zucco. It was his Responsibility.}

He jumps across to another building and stops when he hears someone calling for help. He stands still for a moment and changes directions going to the source of the cries for help.

{On the fourth night...He found something else.}

He reaches where he thought he heard the shout come from and sees a group of three men cornering a man, a woman, and a small boy. They looked to be a mother, father, and child. Judging by how they are dressed and the jewelry the mother is wearing they are well off. The father is shielding and protecting the mother and son by keeping them behind him.

It appears there was a scuffle seeing as how his suit is ruffled, his face has a bruise and his lip is bleeding. He is holding onto his rib with the hand that's not holding his family behind him. He looks winded and tired but his eyes burn with a determination to protect his family.

The three men cornering them also look to have a few bruises of their own and are looking at the man warily. It seems they underestimated him and paid the price for it.

{Maybe it was the adrenaline. He's not sure.}

Leonard watches as one of the men says something and reaches into his jacket and pulls out a Glock causing the family of three to flinch and take a step back in fear. Leonard without a second thought jumps down from the roof.

{But he likes to think he jumped off that roof because of more than that. Because he knew he should.}

Leonard launches himself as he descends off the side of the building and kicks the gun-wielding criminal in the jaw breaking it with a satisfying crack, causing him to drop the gun and howl in pain. His surprise attack shocks the other two frozen, and he uses it to his advantage, jumping and roundhouse kicking one on the chin and knocking him out.

He kicks the last guy in the chest, grabs his arm gut punches him, and while he is winded, jumps onto his shoulders, locks his legs around his neck, and swings down to the left side, sending the guy flying towards a wall hitting his head knocking him out as well.

He kicks the gun over to the father of the family which snaps him out of his shock and awe at what he just witnessed. He looks at the man and nods his head at him, the man seeming to understand picks up the gun and aims it at the one guy that was still writhing in pain from his broken jaw.

Leonards hears the sirens of a police cruiser incoming and nods one last time to the man, who seems to find his voice finally and says "Thank you, whoever you thank you so much,". Leonard just gives a thumbs up and turns to leave and is stopped by the man, "Wait! Here take this. Feel free to call if you ever need anything I can do to repay you for protecting me and my family," The man hands him a personal card with his number on it.

Leonard takes the card and once again nods at the man and turns and runs up the side of the building grabs onto the fire escape and makes his up the building and disappears into the night.

{Because he knew he could help them.}
