In the end, Mike still could not convince Rick, so he stayed in the prison and Rick left the base with a group of people after having something to eat.
For the transportation of supplies and personnel, Rick and his group drove only five vehicles of which two were armored and the other three were military trucks. These types of trucks serve as cargo, have large bodies and their stability is among the best. In recent days, many of their shortcomings have become their advantages.
The compartments of these three trucks have been reconditioned, with steel plates installed on both sides and at the rear, which can be removed during loading and unloading, or simply open the rear lid at the back, so that the steel plates welded on it become supports where people can load things.
After a while, a group of five vehicles was moving towards the military base and fifty people were traveling in it.
Thanks to the fact that many in Rick's group knew the way, Rick and the others made no mistake in taking routes taking a little over two hours to reach the base after traveling dozens of kilometers.
This base is actually not far from the city, but it is located in a relatively hidden place. The soldier who came here is named Arnold. According to him, this should be the largest military base nearby. There were quite a few troops stationed here at first, but they must have been moved in the early days of the end of the world. He doesn't know how many people are left now but it was ideal for planes and helicopters to land.
Rick and the others made their way toward the base gate without much in the way. They paid attention to the watchtowers and found no guards. The outside of this place was surrounded by fences but there was a difference as on other sides surrounded by walls.
"If we hadn't found the prison in the beginning, this place would be very suitable as a base to live." Rick looked at the open space and sighed.
Daniel, off to the side, laughed and said, "Let's clean this place up first. If it is suitable, it will be taken as a base along with the people who will come here. The distance between the prison and this place is not too far, it will only take an hour by car and minutes by helicopter after a suitable route is established.
Rick nodded, he looked at the sides and this place was definitely very good. As Daniel talked about it, he was becoming more and more convinced that he could use this place as a new base.
As part of the group got out of the vehicles and approached the gate, they discovered that the gate was locked. Looking closely, Rick found that a chain was tied to the door, so they could not enter.
"Huh? How could it possibly be locked?"
Rick gestured behind him, and Morales approached with a couple of quips in his hands and then snapped the chain.
Rick looked at Morales and nodded, then signaled for everyone to get into the vehicles and the situation up ahead was clear after a glance, five cars drove straight in and several walkers appeared but were crushed by the cars that didn't stop after relocking the gate to keep more walkers out.
At first instance, a dozen members of Rick's group jumped out of the trucks and pulled out their cold weapons eliminating these walkers. The scattered walkers in the square posed no threat at all, and all were eliminated in short order.
When the group of five people got out of the vehicles, Rick asked everyone to put away the cold weapons and prepare for the worst, and with a signal the cars headed for the inner plaza wall.
The fence was constructed of bricks and was thick enough to resist against all types of attacks. Stopping, Daniel climbed onto the top of an armored vehicle and looked out over the main square.
In the distance, behind the inner fence were a large number of walkers, probably attracted by the sound of the vehicles.
Daniel looked at Rick with a complex expression and motioned for him to come closer and see. When he got into the car and saw this scene, Rick also felt a little tired. There are too many walkers in the yard. It's estimated that there are at least five hundred of them....
And Rick discovered that there were a large number of plainclothes walkers in the yard.
Looking at the huddled corpses, Daniel said a little strangely, "It seems that the survivors have been housed here, but why didn't these people flee together with the army?"
Rick, next door, naturally didn't know, but he could speculate.
"Maybe they were locked up after they became walkers. You can see there are bullet holes in the bodies of the corpses in the front, and all the doors here and on the outside are locked. The survivors who fled should see them closed for protection, it makes sense to see it that way."
Daniel looked at the people who previously before becoming walkers should have been living in the courtyard, but now there was no one to save. Thinking about the situation inside the central base of the community, he felt that something similar could happen as in this place.
Rick on the sidelines yelled to Jim downstairs, "Put the cars in a line and let everyone stand on the roof to deal with the walkers inside."
Not long after, a group of people had already stood on the roof, and the force had to eliminate these walkers before the people who would be sent by Airon arrived at this location with supplies. After most of the walkers were eliminated, only a few were visible behind the door inside the base.
Rick then instructed the team members to prepare for close combat.
The moment the door was opened, the remaining dozen walkers ran out of the door all at once, but these walkers with teeth and claws were cut in the head by more than a dozen cold weapons the moment he ran out of the door and then fell to the ground.
These walkers were just appetizers, they were resolved without any risk and the group continued to go deeper.
The inner courtyard is not small at all.
The ground was all hardened with cement, and there was still the odd walker wandering around in different parts of the square, and none of them resulted in gunfire. As the walkers approached, they would be eliminated by clean hits from cold weapons.
Passing through this plaza and parking five cars in front of a building, Rick looked at the structure here.
There is a large warehouse not far away, and next to it is a group of slightly lower buildings. It should be only one story high, but there are many rooms where the command room is possibly located.
Rick first entered the warehouse not far away, there was a double door here, which was closed at the moment, but also there was a small open door.
Rick motioned, and several members of the group stepped forward and grabbed the doorknob. With the silent countdown, the door swung open and a walking corpse jumped out of it.
The few people guarding the door cleared the walkers with a few knives. Rick entered the warehouse, and the first thing he saw was three tanks parked inside, and there appeared to be other vehicles parked behind the tanks. That made him feel ecstatic.
The tanks on the base played a very important role during the last horde. Even though these big guys consume a lot of fuel, the role they can play is irreplaceable. That can give people a great sense of security.
"These beasts are incredibly beautiful!"
Jim looked in amazement at these much more modern tanks than the ones in the prison and parked in the corner and couldn't help but speak excitedly.
Rick was also very happy, they continued to walk inside, and slowly all these war machines appeared in front of everyone.
In addition to the M1A2 Abrams tanks, ten armored vehicles and more than a dozen Humvees were stored here.
"It looks like no one has been here before, and the weapons and equipment are well preserved. I think these vehicles should have been left behind in the early days when the army was being deployed.
A man named Arnold walked up at some point, looking at this familiar equipment with excitement.
Rick looked back at Arnold, then pointed to the side and said, "Have you been here before, are you familiar with what's here?"
Arnold glanced at the layout of the warehouse, thought for a moment before replying, "This warehouse hasn't changed much. If it's the same as here, I can probably recognize the rest of the structures."
"But seeing as the situation in the warehouses is normal, we should go to the residential area where the military is resting."
"Understood!"
