The alarm went off exactly at six. But it was the vibration of the phone on the table that woke me up. Waking up in new places had become a habit for me, but it still took me a minute to realise where I am and gather my bearings. There was a faint light coming through the window and I realised that it is still early morning in the mountains. The fire had died out in the fireplace, but the embers were keeping the room warm.
I got up slowly and walked over to the window. The top half of the window was glass and I looked out through it. There was a faint light on the outside but the surroundings were empty. I took the camera out of the bag and walked out of the room and out to the veranda. I felt the chill in the air and quickly came back to my room to put on a woollen blanket and walked back out.
