Chapter 2 - The Substitute Of The Wanted Crimson Necromancer II

An elderly man standing behind the ghost king lowered his head and spoke politely, "If Your Majesty wishes to retrieve that soul and apprehend that mortal, this humble servant is willing to travel to the mortal realm.""There is no need." The ghost king turned to his back and walked past the elderly man, slapping the ends of his robe sleeves against the air. "Do you know whose soul it is?"The elderly man shook his head, his gaze still lowered. "May Your Majesty forgive this humble servant, for he knows nothing about the identity of that soul."The ghost king remained silent, raising his lashes and staring into the abysmal darkness of the underworld with countless untold thoughts running through his head. Behind his mask was a hidden pair of woeful eyes nobody had ever seen.Everything from the underworld disappeared, as if Li Yuan had just awoken from a long slumber. He found himself lying on the ritual array with the soul-storing bottle clutched in his hands. He was finally back in the cave. The returning spell, which was said to be precarious, was a success."Master!" He Jin put down the lyre harp and dashed over to Li Yuan, gently aiding him in rising to his feet."There is no need to worry. I am fine. I am just exhausted from using too much of my nenha." Li Yuan uncapped the soul-storing bottle and released Fen Lei's soul particles into the air like fireflies. The soul particles floated and lingered around them for a moment before coalescing into a gleaming image of a young woman dressed in a white burial gown."Master, is it her?" He Jin murmured. But even if he spoke those words loudly enough, Fen Lei would not understand.Li Yuan was aware of this matter. He placed his right index and middle fingers in the air and moved them as if he were writing something. Fen Lei found it strange, but she remained silent as she observed his actions. As soon as Li Yuan completed his strange finger movements, a paper talisman appeared and flew towards Fen Lei, eventually disappearing after merging with her soul.Fen Lei was bemused. "What was that?""You certainly will not understand our language, so I have given you the temporary ability to speak and understand it," Li Yuan answered.Fen Lei was taken aback when she realized she had just conversed with him in a language she was unfamiliar with. How did that happen? Was this man endowed with supernatural abilities to perform such things?"This is my disciple, He Jin." Li Yuan smiled and pointed to He Jin.Fen Lei locked her gaze on He Jin, taking in every detail of his unusual appearance. He was taller than Li Yuan and had enticing facial features. In fact, he seemed more masculine than his master. He wore a navy blue robe tucked into an ankle-length pleated black skirt, and his hair was styled similarly to Li Yuan's."Fen Lei," Fen Lei said flatly."Ha?" He Jin was puzzled."That is her name," Li Yuan whispered to him.He Jin frowned at her, wondering if that was all there was to it. He did not even receive a single hello from her. Did she not know how to greet others? However, Fen Lei was oblivious to his irritation, or she might have been aware but did not care. She simply shifted her gaze to Li Yuan and asked, "What country is this?""This is the country of Azura," Li Yuan replied."Azura?" Fen Lei's brow furrowed. "Is there such a country on the world map?""How come you have never heard of this country when it is the largest country in the world? Are you stupid?" He Jin remarked.Fen Lei was irritated. "Are you not the stupid one here? Do you even read books or do internet searches? Russia is the largest country in the world.""You!" He Jin pointed at Fen Lei and then looked at Li Yuan. "Master, this woman makes no sense!""Calm down, calm down." Li Yuan stepped between them with an awkward smile. "He Jin, Fen Lei is from another world, so you may not understand some of her words."Fen Lei squinted. "What are you saying?""I am saying that this world is not the one you used to live in," Li Yuan replied. "I understand if you find it difficult to believe such a thing, and I will not force you to do so. However, what I said is true."Fen Lei was silent for a long moment, waiting for them to confess that they were only messing with her, but there was no hint of a lie in their expressions. "Fine, I will pretend to believe it. But why have you brought me here? If this is a different world, how can I find my murderer and bring justice to my death?"Li Yuan could only scratch his head and offer an awkward smile in response."What a treacher," Fen Lei muttered."How dare you address my master in such a manner!" He Jin vociferated, pointing at her."Am I not allowed to speak the truth?" Fen Lei replied."You!" He Jin was about to charge at Fen Lei when he noticed Li Yuan scowling at him. He fell into an abrupt silence and quickly took two steps backward, pursing his lips to shut his mouth.Li Yuan's scowl disappeared when he turned his gaze to Fen Lei. "I will help you, but you have to help me first."Fen Lei heaved a sigh, unable to figure out what this man wanted from her. "What exactly do you want me to do?"Li Yuan was silent for a while before responding, "Be my substitute.""Ha?" Fen Lei and He Jin exclaimed in unison, stupefied."Wait a second. Are you saying that I should possess you?" asked Fen Lei, but Li Yuan shook his head. "Then how is that thing possible if I do not possess your body?"Aside from Li Yuan, no one had dared to delve into the depths of dark arts in the past five centuries, as the gods had forbidden all magic involving demonic techniques. But despite the fact that dark arts remained largely unexplored by many, a few were still aware of some forbidden techniques. One of these techniques was the self-sacrifice ritual.Needless to say, no one ever attempted to perform this forbidden technique, as it required the sacrifice of a living body to the soul that would become the new owner of the sacrificial body. Who would indeed be willing to resurrect the dead in exchange for their own body?No one, aside from Li Yuan. The cave was deafeningly quiet for a long moment. Li Yuan was hesitant to speak, considering that his disciple was right beside him. His expression did not change much, but he could feel a pang of sadness swiftly blossoming in his chest. However, even though this pang was ready to break forth through his eyes at any moment, he was able to alleviate it and keep it hidden. He Jin's eyes widened upon apprehending the situation. "That is not possible..."
