Chapter 7 - The Substitute Gains A New Experience I

He Jin's desire to murder Fen Lei dissipated immediately, and his curiosity grew the longer he looked at the gathered people.Fen Lei's interest was piqued as well. Thus, they approached the scene only to discover two wounded villagers being aided by their fellow villagers—one was conscious, and the other was unconscious. These wounded villagers were young men dressed in ripped robes that appeared to have been ripped by a hundred blades, and every rip in their robes revealed a strange purplish wound on their skin."Their wounds are strange." Fen Lei mumbled as he observed their wounds. He then turned his attention to the unconscious villager and noticed a large rip in his right sleeve, exposing a bleeding purplish wound that appeared to have been cut by a sharp and very thin object. His bleeding knee was also exposed by another large rip in his lower garment. He Jin was alarmed, but his voice was calm as he asked, "What happened?""Gentleman He, a gauwoki attacked us," answered the young man in a weak voice. He Jin took a close look at the cuts on the young man's robe before asking once more, "Can you tell me how you got those cuts?"The young man grimaced slightly as he stammered, "T-the cobwebs. The cobwebs that wounded us were sharp.""Can you describe the gauwoki that attacked you? And where were you when it appeared?" There was a deep furrow in He Jin's brow as he spoke."It was a huge spider with a human head, and we were in the forest near the waterfalls when it attacked us. I am begging you, Gentleman He and Gentleman Li. Please save our fellows." The young man was on the verge of crying. He Jin nodded and turned his gaze to the villagers. "Bring these two to the village doctor."The villagers immediately followed He Jin's orders, and Fen Lei could not help but be impressed upon witnessing this. He thought, had these people always been this obedient and respectful to Li Yuan and He Jin?"Let us go." He Jin gave Fen Lei a glance before opening a portal in front of them. They then entered the portal and arrived at the falls in less than ten seconds. And upon reaching the scene, the cobwebs entangled among the branches and trunks of the trees were the first thing that caught their attention. He Jin walked up to the cobwebs and examined them closely. He frowned after a moment, realizing they were just ordinary cobwebs, completely harmless. But he was not easily persuaded; and thus, he summoned his bow, aimed it at the cobweb hanging from a huge tree branch, and discharged a silver arrow that struck seven cobwebs in a row. However, nothing unusual occurred."Wait, is this your commission?" asked Fen Lei.He Jin gave a nod. "This is the commission I accepted five days ago. And, as described earlier by the young man, this gauwoki is a large spider with a human head. It has been over a week since it appeared and caused havoc in several villages. It only attacked animals at first, but it later began to attack humans."Fen Lei was overcome with goosebumps as he imagined the human spider's appearance. He had never heard of such creatures existing outside of fiction in his world. "Apart from the two villagers earlier, did anyone else survive among those who were taken away by it?"He Jin shook his head. "Nobody knows if they are still alive."The surroundings were serene and tranquil, with only the birds' warbles and the joyful swish of the waterfall over the rocks to be heard. There were no signs of danger. He Jin continued to investigate the area for clues to the villagers' whereabouts, but not a single trace of them could be seen. Meanwhile, Fen Lei picked up a piece of wood from the ground and destroyed the cobwebs, expecting something strange to happen, but the webs remained lifeless."These webs are not sharp. I wonder how they got those cuts." Fen Lei could not contain his curiosity. Thus, he pressed his index finger against the cobweb as he spoke.Seeing this, He Jin's eyes immediately widened in panic. "Do not touch it!" he exclaimed, but it was too late.Fen Lei examined his finger for a few seconds before smiling at him, confirming that nothing strange had occurred. "Hehe, I did not get hurt, so do not worry too much about me."He Jin's desire to murder Fen Lei was reignited upon seeing his smile. Much to his irritation, he grabbed a piece of wood from the ground and hurled it at Fen Lei. However, Fen Lei was quick to react and was able to avoid it with a cheerful smile on his face."Who said I was worried about you! Keep in that stupid mind of yours that you are using my master's body! Tch! I would have kicked you out of that body a long time ago if master had not asked me to guard you!" the young man argued as he pointed at Fen Lei.Although his words were offensive, Fen Lei did not have time to be offended. How could he be offended when he found the angry He Jin to be more amusing than intimidating? To him, He Jin was like a lapdog—one that barked loudly but lacked the courage to bite.Noticing Fen Lei's amused face, He Jin hurled another piece of wood at him, but Fen Lei was able to dodge yet again. However, his face was not as cheerful as the previous one as he had been almost hit by the wood. He gave a snort of displeasure, pointing at He Jin. "You! I thought you were protecting this body. Why does it seem like you are now the one causing harm to this body?"The moment he finished speaking, his gaze was drawn to the falling leaves. They looked like large confetti falling from the branches and dancing in the wind before landing on the ground. He Jin kept on with his one-sided argument, but Fen Lei no longer paid attention to him. He kept his sight focused on the falling leaves. But the truth was that he was more concerned with the wind than with the leaves. There certainly was something strange in the wind. However, it brought no danger, but rather a familiar feeling with which he was unfamiliar—a comfort with which he felt strangely comfortable and a longing for which he could not put his finger on.As he watched the leaves sway and turn in mid-air, he noticed that some of them were splitting into two or three before they could land on the ground. It was as if they were being cut by unseen blades or sharp strings invisibly placed in mid-air. Fen Lei noticed He Jin had already stopped squabbling and was looking at him with a complicated gaze."I believe the cobwebs that harmed those villagers are invisible," Fen Lei stated."What do you mean?" He Jin asked with a squint.Fen Lei picked up a handful of dried leaves from the ground and cast them into the air. Before falling to the ground, the majority of these leaves were split into twos or threes.Seeing this, He Jin immediately understood what Fen Lei meant. He then gave a remark, "If so, how did they know it was the cobwebs that wounded them if these cobwebs were not perceptible?"However, Fen Lei did not seem to hear He Jin as he was occupied with looking around the area. He then saw a piece of wood on the ground a few steps away and quickly grabbed it, intending to throw it at the invisible cobwebs, but as he took it from the ground, he felt a tiny prick in his palm. He uncurled his fingers and noticed a strange cut in his palm that was starting to bleed. The cut was purplish, similar to the cuts on the skin of the two wounded villagers. He shifted his gaze to the cobweb that was slowly emerging in front of him. He was certain it had not been there earlier. However, he eventually understood the situation after a few moments of thought. The cobwebs began to appear around after they came into contact with his blood. It was as if a spark was constantly passing through the air, leaving trails of thick cobwebs until the entire area was surrounded."Watch out!" He Jin exclaimed. But even before Fen Lei could look up, a large net of cobwebs fell on him. The net wrapped itself around his body and quickly bounced back up, suspending him from the tree. He groaned in pain as the net tightened against his body, cutting through his robe and reaching his skin.He Jin immediately summoned his bow and shot the net, releasing Fen Lei from the trap and allowing him to fall to the ground. He then dashed over to him, cursing under his breath as he saw the bleeding cuts on his skin."It looks like blood is required to make those cobwebs visible," Fen Lei remarked with a grimace. He Jin was about to speak when he was interrupted by the crisp sound of parting bushes and rushing steps on leaves. He quickly helped Fen Lei stand, and the two of them hid behind a tree."It is approaching," He Jin whispered. After a while, he began to channel spiritual energy to Fen Lei.Fen Lei could not help but grimace as he felt his wounds throb in pain. "What exactly are these wounds?""Those cobwebs are poisonous," He Jin replied as he took a small bottle of medicine from his hanan. "Drink this. It slows the spread of poison throughout the body."Fen Lei nodded as He Jin handed him the medicine. He did not say anything else and drank it in silence. After a while, the sound of footsteps disappeared and was replaced by the eerie sound of heavy breathing. Despite his fear, Fen Lei could not suppress his curiosity and peeked from behind the tree. The lower and upper lids of his eyes parted further upon seeing the said creature. It was exactly as the villager had described: a giant black spider with a human head. It stood three meters tall and had long black hair, razor-sharp teeth, and red-sharp eyes. The human spider seemed to have sensed a pair of eyes observing in the distance; thus, it turned its head to look in Fen Lei's direction. Fortunately, Fen Lei had already hidden himself back behind the tree before it could see him.He gasped, "That was close!"Meanwhile, He Jin was occupied with casting a spell on him. As soon as he completed reciting the incantation, he attached a paper talisman to Fen Lei's shoulder. "This forest is filled with dangers, so never remove this talisman from your body. You must not leave this spot until I return."Fen Lei nodded and replied, "Be careful."He Jin stepped out from behind the tree, and the human spider rushed over to attack him the moment it saw him. A thick web protruded from the tip of its abdomen and extended toward him, but he was able to dodge and run. He dashed away from the tree and headed west, allowing the human spider to chase him down. After a while, the surroundings became serene. Fen Lei was left seated on the ground, examining the paper talisman affixed to his shoulder. He had seen a few talisman illustrations in the books He Jin had given him, and he was certain this talisman was a concealing talisman used to conceal someone's presence. He could not keep a sigh from escaping his lips as he shifted his gaze to his disheveled appearance. His robe was riddled with cuts, and his wounds had not ceased throbbing. He leaned against the tree, watching the leaves sway on the tree branches as he ruminated on the unfamiliar nostalgia that the wind was bringing him.The wind was blowing gently, and he could hardly keep his eyes open as he felt it caress his skin delicately. However, just as he was about to close his eyes, he was startled awake by the sound of leaves rustling nearby. He looked in its direction and noticed the bushes swaying roughly. It was as if something was trying to pass through them.Fear of coming across another terrifying creature propelled him to rise to his feet quickly, paying no heed to the pain of his wounds. He kept observing the bushes as they moved, until a white fox emerged from among them."A white fox?"
