The sudden vibration of Reggie's phone shattered the silence that had settled over the dinner table as we all ate. His eyebrows knit together as he glanced at the screen, then back up at Lucas and me.
"I'm sorry, I have to take this," he said, pushing his chair back from the table and disappearing into the hallway.
Lucas's eyes bored into mine, the hazel flecks of green and brown flickering in the lighting from above. I could feel the tension between us, heavy and suffocating. My heart raced with the anticipation of the conversation I knew was coming.
"Can you believe these prices?" Lucas remarked, trying to be nonchalant as he moved his spoon slowly through his soup, but I could sense the anger behind his words, jealousy eating at him like a starving beast.
"Lucas, we need to talk," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, reaching out to place my hand on his forearm to hopefully calm him some.
He looked up from his food, his expression full of frustration and hurt.
