Chereads / Dark Abyss: Meteor Apocalypse / Chapter 34 - Against the Invisible 1

Chapter 34 - Against the Invisible 1

"Sylph?"

Ray easily recognized her even from his distance. "I guess she met it first," he said in disappointment. "The least I can do is not be late."

"Wait! W-We're not d-done yet!"

He looked at Jonny who had taken a fighting stance.

"Sorry. But I can't play with you any longer." After saying this, Ray streaked away leaving the unconscious Randy, shocked Mark and enraged Jonny, who wanted to go after him, but couldn't, as he had underestimated the damages he had received from Ray. Especially his arm.

"I'll s-surely get you," he vowed.

Sylph noticed a golden streak approaching her position. 'He was closer than I thought.'

She fixed her gaze back to the strange sight in front of her. Blood was trickling down mid-air to the ground.

She had succeeded in injuring the abyssal. She wondered what kind of face it would be making.

"I see you started without me. Truly heart breaking," Ray, who had arrived, commented. "Hmmmm! You've performed quite the number on it." He stared at the blood which seemed to have turned to face him.

Ray placed his hand on his head with an exhausted expression. "You gave me quite a headache. I hope you make...….." His eyes suddenly widened as the abyssal had already charged at him.

'Shit! it's fast!' His aura enveloped him as he crossed his arm before the abyssal's attack made contact sending him rocketing into a building.

Sylph shook her head when she saw this. She raised her right hand up as large amounts of wind drew towards her and began spiraling above it continuously, while taking the form of a flat, shimmering disc.

She was about to hurl it towards the abyssal when she felt a prick on her skin.

"I didn't want to do this, but you gave me no choice. You can't go around hurting people," the Sentry who she had seen earlier voiced out in exhaustion with a victorious smile.

Going after someone who could fly was a major challenge and he used almost all his stamina doing so. He was glad that he had his gun with him. This gun was gifted to him by a high Noble after he saved his daughter. It was capable of paralysing a 2.0 greater abyssal for two minutes.

She remove the dart from her hand, immediately knowing what it was. Her eyes shone slightly with worry as she began losing control of her body.

The attack which she was preparing got dispersed as she lost altitude, not being able to sustain herself any longer. She fell directly towards the abyssal, which wasted no time to swing towards her.

She closed her eyes with a calm unbothered expression. Only her knew what she was thinking.

"Vwwooommmm!!"

A golden beam shot from within a building, straight to the black trickling blood, causing it to be sent flying into the opposite building. And by the nature of the attack, it was something which was thrown.

Before Sylph could make contact with the ground, Ray appeared next to her.

"Thud!"

Ray looked at her. "Just bare with this."

Sylph was lying on a small mattress which he had put below her. He raised his arms displaying their bloodied state. "I can't believe that abyssal did this to me." He looked around, but the abyssal was already gone.

"Hey! Stay away from her, she's dangerous." A voice came from behind.

Ray slightly shifted his gaze to see a young man walking towards him. Immediately, he knew that this man was a Sentry.

"Her paralysation would only last for five more minutes, so if I were you, I'd better be wherever the wind takes me by now."

He frowned after listening to Ray. "Young man, I'd advise you to step aside." He pointed the gun, which had three more darts at him.

"You don't wanna do that."

"Swish."

Ray had his hand outstretched with his index and thumb holding the dart. He wanted to throw it back at him, but decided to keep it for a more important time.

Seeing Ray catch the dart which was sent at such speed, his hands got sweaty. "Umm! I.. I'll let you both off this time. M-Make sure you don't cause anymore destruction, or else I won't be so.....um, nice, thank you," he said nervously before turning around and walking away.

Ray sat cross-legged with his eyes closed and after 5 minutes, Sylph sat up bringing her gaze to his injured arm which had stopped bleeding and gradually started healing. She was a little surprised how he was able to guess when the effects would wear off.

"We lost it huh?" she muttered in disappointment.

"Not necessarily," Ray replied casually.

"What do you mean?" She asked.

"Hmph!" He opened his eyes with a smirk. "That dagger I threw at it earlier had a tracker which latches onto its targets when it pierces. Do you think I'm going to let it go after looking for it for so long? No offence."

She shook her head and stood up from the mattress. "Do you have it?"

"No, we'll have to get back. Besides, going after it now is suicide." He responded.

"Why do you say that?"

"It's getting late. Fighting something invisible at night is plainly crazy." He also stood up.

"So you suggest we go after it tomorrow?" She knew what he said made sense, but she didn't want the abyssal in the neighbourhood even for just another night.

"Yes. I'll be heading out first." Ray turned around to leave when she spoke up.

"Why did you let him go?"

"Come on, he was just doing his job." He chuckled before streaking away.

*************************

Some minutes later,

Dusk had arrived and most people were beginning to retire back to their houses, mostly because of the increasing cases of kidnapping and the 7:30 PM curfew which the Count of the neighbourhood had imposed.

Inside a room, two people could be seen seated on opposite sides of a small table while looking at a radar, which had a slowly moving red dot.

"The distance from us and the abyssal is about 2 km and is still slowly advancing. That area it's heading to has a great amount of population." Sylph's angelic voice had a hint of worry.

"Hmm. Maybe it decided to go all out. "

She looked at him for some time, and he seemed to be lost in his own thoughts. She had been observing him since they met, and according to what she had observed, he was a carefree, selfish person who won't sacrifice his interest for that of others and was willing to go as far as, to achieve his goals.

He was amusing and disrespectful to enemies, while distancing himself from normal people and allies.

She didn't have a problem at all about his character. On the contrary, his character was one of the few she preferred.

"It stopped," said Ray after noticing the red dot no longer moving. 'Something is wrong.' He didn't know why, but his instincts were kicking in after studying the Abyssal's movement.

"I'll be back." Sylph took the radar and walked towards the window before flying out.

Ray who already knew what she was going to do rested his back on that of the chair he was seated on with a sigh.

The injuries he had sustained from the abyssal were almost completely healed and he believed that he would be as good as knew in the next two hours.

Not just him, other aberrants were also able to heal, although more powerful aberrants were able to heal faster. This was caused by the genes of the abyssal as they were all capable of healing, which was the greatest challenge the military faced when they confronted the abyssal's five years ago, as some of them were even capable of instant regeneration.

If it wasn't for the discovery of this slaisten metal, they would all be dead by now.

Sylph graciously floated into the room through the window some minutes later, with a frown on her face.

"What is it?"

"It has publicly attacked the area where it is located." She replied.

A sigh escaped Ray's lips when he heard this. "Too bad for them."

"What do you mean? You won't be going after it?"

Ray stared at her blankly. "Of course not. It's too dangerous. I'll advise you not to go."

She stared into his eyes for some time before breaking the eye contact and walking towards the room's door. "Thanks, but I won't be taking your advice," she said before walking out of the room.
