Nicholas entered the room, he was the alpha's aide. I had been locked inside this room for some days while they thought of what to do with me. Things had escalated since I marked the alpha. However, it isn't complete. I would need to drink his blood for the mate mark to be complete. And that as we know is never going to happen.
"At least this would keep me from death's door," I said out loud. Leaning on the sofa next to the window.
"Hopefully" Nicholas' voice broke me from my wandering daze. I gave him an unbothered look.
"He has a message for me." He announced, I raised an eyebrow folding my arms to my chest.
"Are you sure it's from him?" I asked sceptically because the last we saw he wanted me six feet under.
"The message is 'watch where you go, cause if we are to cross part I will kill you" more death threats. But he can't kill me.
I nodded, "Yeah that definitely sounds like him" I wouldn't mistake it for another person who wished me dead.
"What's his deal anyway about having no mate? I thought it's something every werewolf looks forward to." At least that's what I read.
"It's true having a mate doesn't come easily for everyone. However, our alpha was born from a special lineage of wolves. It is something of utmost importance." I rolled my eyes at his obvious emphasis. But curious about what he meant I asked further. "What do you mean by 'special'?"
"He has the ability to see and feel premonitions into the future." He stated.
"Then if he could see into the future he should have predicted me " It didn't come out as calm as I hoped you could hear the resentment pure in my voice.
He shrugged nonchalantly, "He must have a reason. I assure you even though He may be callous, merciless, a bit difficult, cruel…" he listed.
"Be careful your true thoughts are slipping out" I warned, he cleared his throat before he continued.
"-But he is still a fair and just alpha who cares for his pack." He concluded finally.
I was fed up hearing praises about him. Every single person praised him like he was some righteous person.
I changed the topic, sick of hearing his name about. "Can I leave this place now? I'm tired of seeing the walls." I spat aggressively not holding back my seething anger for you know whom.
He stepped aside revealing a woman, young, she looked to be in her thirties. She came forward. I relaxed my furrowed brows hoping she didn't hear me speak badly of her alpha.
"My name is Daphne" she spoke with obvious resentment in her tone. Her voice was sharp and strong. She lifted her head, slicing a gaze at me. Then her face softened as she tilted her head with a small smile.
"I'll help you get settled in," she said in a softer tone. For a second I thought I imagined the resentful gaze.
I looked at Nicholas for an explanation, feeling her razor-sharp gaze burrowing through the side of my head. I just made another enemy. Great
"Oh, yes forgive me for failing to inform you. You will now be working as a maid in this mansion." He gestured to her. "and she will help guide you through it."
I looked at him flabbergasted by what he said. "What? A maid? Whyyy?" I raised my voice.
"It was decided by the alpha" I wanted to retort but he cut me off immediately, "and no, you cannot see him for anything." I was at a loss for words.
I was going to escape anyway. Nicholas, about to leave, turned back. "If you think about escaping Daphne will handle your torture. So my piece of advice, don't try escaping." He left.
I was left alone with a silent Daphne shooting daggers at me. though It never showed up upfront in her face. I smiled back at her.
"Follow me," she said with a scowl turning away to leave. "We need to get you into proper uniform"
When I didn't move a step she stopped at the foot of the door. Sending her cold gaze my way. I shrugged off the child I felt from her. She doesn't scare me.
"You want it the hard way then, I will be more than happy to oblige as you want"
My gut slumped to my stomach, I stepped back, my eyes darting to her side where her hands went slowly pulling out a knife she had hidden under her gown. I looked into her eyes. She's just bluffing. She couldn't kill me.
But the look in her eyes said otherwise. I closed my eyes tightly, giving into the fear that ran through me.
"Fine" I shouted, I didn't want to get harmed. Memories of the night I got attacked haunted my thoughts. It was hard to get rid of and the sight of a blade reminded me.
The sound of her blade sheathing underneath her skirt. "Now we go change your uniform." She said, calmly. I reluctantly went along. It was just for now. When I got the gem. I would escape.
She took me to another part of the mansion, where another building was located. It had many people walking about and was busier than the main house. She called it the servant building.
I was going to be staying here with the rest of the servants. And she was going to keep a close eye on me while I stayed here. She dropped a set of clothes onto my arms.
"This is your uniform." She said I collected them without a word. And she walked ahead. Some people greeted her with warm smiles. And she smiled back at them waving away.
"So you live a double life, ordinary friendly maid by day and an assassin by night," I stated. She said between gritted teeth as she smiled at a couple of girls passing by at that minute.
"You aren't allowed to talk about anything regarding your encounter with the alpha. No one must know about it." She stopped abruptly, "also we are colleagues working together in this place."
"Yeah right" I muttered
