Chapter 22 - Chapter 21 Demon Governor

The phrase "Please give me your Mana" actually carries derivative meanings beyond the literal sense and originated from the Empire before spreading across the continent.

In the usual sense, it is generally believed that the birth of offspring stems from the intermingling of the parents' bloodline and corresponding soul (Mana), which is why the children of aristocrats only marry into other aristocratic families they deem worthy.

Thus, the meaning of "give me your Mana" bears a resemblance to "give me your DNA".

However, it's a phrase that's not easily misunderstood... it can be intentionally misinterpreted in a skewed direction, but those exchanging it generally don't think that way.

"Is it related to the Governor?"

Hilena, who asked this question, received a nod from Yila, who said, "I'm rather curious if the Mana of someone with special talents like Tipcapu is different from that of an average succubus."

"Hmm... can I consider this compensation related to 'fertilizer'?"

After hesitating for a moment, Hilena said this...

It's quite excessive; although they hadn't completely discussed what compensation Yila should receive, undoubtedly, the compensation shouldn't just be written off like that.

"Alright."

Yet Yila said this, which Hilena didn't expect such a decisive response to, and she raised her head in confusion, then her tail was suddenly grasped by Yila.

As the warm palm made contact with her tail, Hilena's body flinched sharply.

"Ugh!!"

Just as he previously ignored Tipcapu's strange cries, Yila now ignored Hilena's soft cries and panting as he extracted magic power. He extracted roughly the same amount of Mana and then immediately let go.

"Huff... huff..."

"Lord Yila... if it's a surprise attack... it's too much..."

Yila glanced at Hilena, blushing, who was playfully scolding him, and simply said: "I don't need any compensation; if you wish to repay me in the future, just remember this moment when the Demon King Territory decides to betray me."

"..."

These words seemed like a way for Hilena to graciously accept a kind gesture, but they also seemed to reflect Yila's genuine thoughts. For a moment, Hilena snapped out of the strange feeling caused by the extraction of Mana.

It seems Yila was indeed troubled by the Empire's attitude, and his words undoubtedly meant he hoped everyone in the Demon King Territory would remember his actions... rather than providing tangible compensation.

Sincere interaction merits sincere repayment, which is not excessive — it could even be considered slightly humble.

"Such a day will never come."

Hilena said, guaranteeing as she respectfully bowed her head towards Yila, "If there comes a day, Lord Yila, when you wish to leave the Demon King Territory, we will never stop you."

This is the greatest promise a head maid can make. Although their interactions suggested Hilena held more power than a typical maid.

As Hilena spoke, a familiar voice to them both came from the other side; "Indeed, it would be impossible to block a Governor with monsters, wouldn't it?"

Vera, who was speaking, walked over from the corridor, fiddling with her large wizard hat as she said, "If I imagine such a scenario, it would only be Yila breaking through the blockade of the army."

Those words weren't wrong; it could even be said... currently, if Yila wanted to leave, no one could stop him.

Vera seemed to have been eavesdropping on Yila and Hilena's conversation for a while. Curiously, she looked at Hilena, whose blush had not yet faded, and said, "So that's how it feels to have your Mana extracted by the Governor? On the battlefield, then, isn't it?"

Saying this, Vera conjectured about the creatures on the battlefield whose lives and Mana were being harvested... perhaps their deaths were not as painful as those killed by ordinary professionals? Given that it might be pleasurable while they die?

Lost in her thoughts, Vera felt that as a mage with a strong thirst for knowledge, she should try it herself. She placed her pale, almost ashen arm before Yila, saying, "Please accept my Mana."

Undoubtedly, she hoped Yila would extract her Mana.

Interestingly, she intentionally used a phrase most likely to be misinterpreted in the Empire, which could be extended to mean "accept my DNA".

It's hard to believe it wasn't deliberate.

Though Yila knew what Vera misunderstood, he didn't understand her thoughts that deeply; he placed his hand on Vera's arm doubtfully, saying, "Then, please don't resist."

Drawing out the magic power belonging to the Witch Demon from Vera's body, he felt the Mana circulate in his wing pillar and said, "But perhaps only succubi have a special reaction when their Mana is extracted."

Yila waited until after he had begun the extraction to tell Vera... since it was free Mana offered, he had no reason not to collect it.

No matter how one thinks, if during the extraction of Mana on the battlefield through an arm puncturing a creature, it could also bring about the pleasure similar to that of a succubus being drained of Mana, then the Governor's dignity might vanish.

It doesn't sound that dignified either.

"..."

Vera, as a Witch Demon, had high-quality Mana, much like the half-dragon Witch Demon she once eliminated during wartime. Yila clearly remembered comfortably using the Witch Demon's Mana in the third wing pillar (long-range attack) at that time.

"Hmm... this feeling..."

Realizing she wouldn't exhibit the same expression as Hilena didn't disappoint Vera; she searched through her familiar vocabulary for suitable words but could only say, "Quite novel and wondrous."

"More intriguing is how you Governors differentiate between my Mana from when I was a Witch Demon and from when I was human. From my perspective, they're essentially similar."

Curious, Vera watched the ash-grey Mana gathering in Yila's hand and, amidst the incongruity while her magic power was being used continuously, said, "Why can't 'Governors' utilize human Mana and can only use monster Mana?"

In response to Vera's curious inquiry, Yila narrowed his eyes slightly but eventually decided to explain...

Yila: "Why do you think it's not possible?"

Vera: "Eh?"

...

"The inability to use humans as 'bullets' is a constraint rather than a limitation for Governors; it's about what 'shouldn't be' rather than what 'can't be'. It's something I proposed and designed."

Yila said, contemplating as he looked at Vera, patting her on the shoulder, and said: "By using special means to erase a few bytes of the World Spell in the Talismanic Knot on my neck, I can become an unconstrained Governor."

At that point, Yila would truly become a fearsome professional, terrifying everyone... a Governor allied with demons.

"A Demon... Governor?"

Vera murmured softly.
