Chapter 16 - Black Market

The Kingdom of Meredhia is often referred to as a prosperous country, its people live happily. However, inevitably, there are still some groups whose lives are still struggling, poverty, and high crime cases. The kingdom can't fully control all aspects of the country.

Amara and I went to the house of a brown-haired boy named Rossi. My sister promised to cure his mother. Well, even if it meant using my money.

"There's a slum neighborhood in Capital?" Amara was surprised to see a neighborhood that wasn't suitable for living in.

Trash was scattered all over the place, cockroaches and rats roaming around, foul odor. Amara was speechless at all that.

"You only hear good things from Capital. And well, these are the ulcers of Meredhia's royal capital."

"When did you start living here?" Amara asked Rossi.

"I don't know. It's probably been generations, according to my mom!" Rossi replied in a flat voice.

"That's... The kingdom should know about this. How can you be allowed to live like this?"

Rossi didn't respond. Well, I could already tell the truth.

"There's no one to grant your wish, is there?" I said.

Amara was surprised.

"Our voices are not being heard!" Rossi said.

After walking for a few minutes. We finally reached Rossi's house. Amara saw the state of his mother. She was very sick, suffering from some kind of disease for which medicine was very expensive and hard to come by.

Do I have enough money?

We bought the medicine for Rossi's mother.

"Thank you. I don't know what to get used to. I ...." Rossi was crying and about to prostrate himself before us.

"No, no. You don't need to return the favor!" Amara immediately stopped him.

"But, your money. It was very expensive!"

"There's no need to worry. This brother of mine can always be counted on to find money, even if the source is unclear. I also have a hunch that he likes to rob the criminals in this town!?"

Ugh... that upright is so on point. Women's intuition is scary.

Rossi didn't understand what Amara was talking about, he tilted his head in confusion.

"Well, if you insist on returning the favor. There is one way!" said Amara suddenly with a smile.

My sister's smile was sweet, but she rarely showed it.

"You have to survive. You, your stepbrother, your mother, and everyone you know here. I promise to change your lives for the better." Amara said seriously, her eyes radiating determination.

She then muttered in a low voice with a dark expression. "Useless nobles!"

After finishing our business with Rossi, we continued our date which was almost completely over. My money had run out and it was almost nighttime.

"My brother, we're not going back to the dormitory!"

"Huh? What were you thinking?"

"We have to investigate the baby trafficking. This can't be allowed!"

Well, the main character started moving. The named characters will intervene in this matter as well.

We then traveled around the Capital through quiet alleys. Our goal is to find a criminal or something related to baby trafficking. Amara believes that it has been going on for quite some time and needs to be eradicated.

Rossi had previously told us about the place where he would sell his brother.

"My sister, we'd better report this case to the royal court," I suggested suddenly. "Our enemy is probably a large group. It's too dangerous!"

"Nothing can be expected from the nobles! They'll ask for solid evidence and make excuses. After hearing Rossi's story, I finally understood. After all, I don't intend to hunt them down. But, just to gather evidence."

"Huh, that's up to you. I can only support you."

"That's enough. Nothing will happen, I will protect you. What happened five years ago when we were hunting bandits won't happen again!" Amara smiled.

I just nodded. My sister had indeed developed her magic and sword skills. She was one of the strongest students in our batch. But, she still needs to learn many things.

We finally arrived at the place Rossi had told us about. It was a liquor bar.

We sighed before entering the adult section.

"Wow, we have a very sweet customer today. Hey, young lady, want to play with me? I'll give you pleasure as you've never felt."

Amara ignored all the advances directed at her. The disgusting men here were trying to annoy my sister.

We arrived at the bar and spoke to the man serving drinks. Amara told him the code written on the paper leaflet Rossi had.

"Oh, I see. Please follow me!" The guard led us to a door at the back of the bar. It was a room for storing liquor.

He lifted one of the bottles on the storage shelf and it shifted. There was a secret passage leading underground.

"Thank you."

The bar staff also gave us a lantern to light our way.

We descended the stairs one by one.

"It's a little strange, my sister. They're not suspicious of us at all. Don't they think we're knights?" I said, breaking the silence.

"That makes sense. But, this already shows that this information is caused in certain circles. Probably just poor people and criminals!" Amara's answer was quite good.

We had been walking for half an hour. The stairs were over and now it was down a long hallway.

After 10 minutes, we came to a large room. It's like a market, well a black market. Everyone is buying and selling illegal goods.

Amara and I focused on the people carrying babies.

"They're just desperate people! Willing to trade babies for money!" Amara was upset at the sight. She wanted to help them, but she was aware of her abilities.

We joined the crowd of people carrying babies and exchanging them for money. Well, it was a lot of money.

This is strange. Why would someone or a group look for babies and spend so much money? Will they be sold again?

No, that's too simple. Money is no longer the main issue.

'Is this what I think it is? Human experimentation. Many fictional stories tell that babies have many advantages over adults to become lab rats. Huh, let's hope our enemy isn't a heretical sect that wants to gain power instantly by worshiping the devil!'
