Chapter 8 - The heir

I heard the phone ring and woke up. My mother was still fast asleep in bed, her ventilator making a soft noise. I glanced at the clock on the wall and realized that I had been asleep for five hours. It is evening now, and my head is still aching and dizzy.

I clicked on the phone screen without even paying attention to who the caller was. My father's loud voice rang out.

"Esther, you, bitch. Where are you? Go back to Joan's mansion, I have something to talk to you about, not about inheritance."

"I'm not going back there. You locked me there like you're putting me in a prison, and yet you think I'll go back there? Never."

Was he angry and yelling at me? I'm the one who should be angry. Immediately, I hung up the phone and turned off the power. I don't want him to contact me, and I also want to cut ties with Joan's family. I hate my own name.

At first, I thought of leaving the inheritance money to them and only taking a little to take care of my and my mother's difficult life. However, they treated me badly, especially my father, he was a greedy old man. I have decided, I will take all this trillions fortune, become a powerful rich woman, cure my mother's illness and live a happy and leisurely life. I don't need to be kind to people who don't even take me seriously.

...

At Joan's mansion...

Mr. Curtis's face turned red in anger. He didn't seem to expect Esther to be so rebellious. He tried calling Esther a few more times but couldn't. He got frustrated and put the phone away, then returned to the living room.

"Sorry, I can't contact Esther Joan. My daughter was not raised properly.

She lives with her mother and doesn't receive the same strict upbringing as Joan's, so she behaves really rudely." Mr. Curtis looked at the two men sitting in front of him.

"It's okay, perhaps Lady Esther is in some trouble. We should still discuss the engagement between the two families and reconfirm with Lady Esther later."

Mr. Donald Arnold smiled politely. And Dominic Arnold sat quietly next to his father.

Their date today is scheduled for Esther Joan and Donald Arnold to meet and discuss their engagement. Great-grandfather Joan and great-grandfather Arnold were close friends. Several years ago, after great-grandfather Joan learned of Esther's existence, he consulted with great-grandfather Arnold and arranged an engagement for two children of two great families.

Great-grandfather Joan loved all of his children and grandchildren, and he also felt sorry for Esther because she had suffered more than the other children of the Joan family. Therefore, he wanted to use the marriage between the two families to make up for that loss for Esther.

Now, both great-grandfathers have passed away. Therefore, Donald Arnold, the current head of the Arnold family, felt the need to meet with Esther's father to discuss this matter seriously.

"Yes I agree with you." Compared to Mr. Donald's polite and calm demeanor, Mr. Curtis did not show any confidence at all.

"As I have told you, the Arnold family is willing to hold an engagement ceremony for my son and Lady Esther if she agrees. I wonder if you have asked Lady Esther or not?"

"Um... this..."

Mr. Curtis hesitated. He absolutely did not want to marry Esther to a prestigious family like the Arnold family. At the same time, he also regrets if this marriage is annulled, because the Arnold family is currently the top family, both rich and powerful. Meanwhile, the Joan family has not prospered since the death of Joan's great-grandfather.

"As far as I know, Esther is dating Baldric Herrington. So she won't accept the engagement."

"Is that so? Oh that's a pity. I want to fulfill the wishes of the two great-grandfathers. Now it doesn't seem possible. We should respect Lady Esther's decision." Mr. Donald sighed.

"Wait, we actually have another way. Instead of forcing Esther to be engaged to someone my daughter doesn't love, we can arrange a marriage between Dominic and my eldest daughter." Mr. Curtis said hastily.

"This doesn't seem right." Mr. Donald did not really agree with Mr. Curtis' suggestion.

At this moment, a girl knocked on the door and brought a tray of cupcakes. She is a beautiful blonde. Her figure is sexy and attractive, her face is rather sharp and her eyes are slightly slanted, but overall she is really pretty.

"Everyone enjoyed the freshly baked cupcakes. I heard the Arnold family was our distinguished guest, so I made the cake myself."

"This is my eldest daughter, Kaylin Joan. She is currently the top student at the prestigious Malibu Academy."

Mr. Curtis just wanted to show everyone how beautiful and talented his eldest daughter is. He was always proud because Kaylin was always the best girl. Kaylin has an outstanding appearance, an outgoing personality, and is well-spoken. Since childhood, Kaylin has always made people love her because she is very intelligent and has an admirable ballet ability.

Kaylin Joan's life can be described in one word: perfect.

"Thank you, Miss Kaylin. These cakes are really pretty." Mr. Donald smiled. His demeanor was really like a warm and mature gentleman.

"Dominic, would you like to taste the cakes I made?" Kaylin smiled and handed the cake to Dominic.

Until now, Dominic had never spoken, he kept quiet and listened. When he saw Kaylin take the initiative to talk, Dominic immediately replied.

"No, thanks. I've already had dinner, madam. And I'm not hungry right now." Dominic coldly refused.

Kaylin was embarrassed to hear that, perhaps this was the first time she had been rejected so harshly.

"These cakes took me two hours to make, and they're pretty good. Try it and I bet you won't regret it." Kaylin gave a charming smile and tried to persuade once more. She likes this man and wants to make a good impression on him.

"No thanks. I didn't come here for cake." Dominic stood up and straightened his suit. "I need to return to my company because there are many things. The engagement will be discussed in the presence of Miss Esther Joan in person."
