I felt a surge of pain as I opened my eyes. I was lying on the cold, hard ground, surrounded by the corpses of zombies and my comrades. I had a vague memory of a figure standing over me, but it must have been a hallucination. I was alone in this hell.
I forced myself to sit up, using my katana as a crutch. I looked around and saw a few of my men still breathing, but barely. They were covered in blood and wounds, too weak to move or fight. I felt a pang of guilt and sorrow. I had failed them as their leader.
I heard a growl behind me and turned to see a zombie charging at one of my men. I instinctively reached for my pistol, but it was empty. I had used up all my ammo in the last stand. "Shit!" I cursed and ran towards the zombie, hoping to reach it before it could bite my man.
"You little shit!" I shouted as I threw my katana at the zombie, aiming for its chest. The blade pierced its flesh and stopped it in its tracks. I quickly followed up with my knife, stabbing it in the head. It fell to the ground, lifeless. I panted as I retrieved my katana and wiped off the blood. "Wake up!" I yelled at my men.
They didn't respond. I shook them one by one, trying to rouse them from their stupor. They groaned and opened their eyes, but they had no strength left. The horde was still after us, and we had no way to escape. We could barely walk, let alone run. Our fate seemed sealed.
Our pace had slowed to a painful crawl, and the relentless pursuit of the undead loomed ever closer. The exhaustion weighed heavy on our shoulders, but the urgency to survive pushed us forward, even if just at a sluggish pace.
"Souta! Souta!" A distant voice called out. I blinked, wondering if I was hearing things. But the voice was real, and it was getting louder. I lifted my binoculars to my eyes and scanned the horizon. I saw a large group of people moving towards us. They were armed.
"Souta!!" The voice belonged to Jenny, she was left in the mansion as we go to the farm, so the mansion was okay? What a relief, it looks like she was coming to save us. She ran towards me, tears in her eyes. She hugged me tightly, as if she never wanted to let go. "I thought you were dead!" She sobbed.
"Jenny" I whispered, feeling a wave of relief "We're all exhausted, take care of my men" I said, and collapsed in her arms.
In such a short time, I woke up, panting, I can still remember the hell we went through. "Where— am I?" I asked but the room looks familiar, it was our room in the mansion, beside me is Amy and Steff resting. My head hurts, I force myself to get out of bed. I saw outside the window, it was midnight, the same time we got ambushed by the horde.
I opened the door, and went outside my room. The mansion feels empty as they are all in their room. I walk downstairs, and saw Jenny sitting on the couch and looking at the laptop.
She noticed me and immediately went to me, "Souta! You're awake!" She exclaimed, hugging me. "Yeah… how was them?" I asked for the wellbeing of my men. "They are fine" she said as she help me sit on the couch.
"What about the horde?" I asked, "We take care of them, burning the whole forest" she said
"I see… can you tell me what happened?" I asked and she start to tell me her story. When we drive away going to the farm, as expected horde of zombies came. However with traps and barricades they hold them back. And after an hour they successfully killed all of them. Then a large explosion was heard. It was when the truck exploded. Worried, they immediately set out a team to check out what happened.
And as soon as they got in to the road where the explosion take place, the other group in the town was also there. We told them about the horde and asked for their help, that's when they help them cleared the remaining horde and help them find us.
