Chereads / The Book Of Lugar / Chapter 3 - The Proposition

Chapter 3 - The Proposition

The following morning a farmer was mulching his fields and came across a trail of blood. He quickly ran back into the house and returned with his shotgun following the trail. Finding all of his sheep to be killed and partially eaten. The trail of goo led him to a crop circle. In the center of the circle he discovered was a boy sleeping. That boy was Lugar.

" Go ahead n wash yourself up , there is a sink in the restroom right here and then you're gonna come out and tell me why you killed my property and how you made that crop circle." - The farmer said while showing him to the restroom.

" Honey, what's going on, dinner is just about fixed." - His wife came to see what all the fretting was about.

" You won't believe it, I found this boy out in the middle of a dag-on crop circle! And our sheep , he slaughtered all of our sheep!" - The farmer was livid.

" Well, it could not have been him, he is just a boy." - She said, wiping her hands on her apron.

" Just have a look at his clothes!" - He was pacing back and forth in disbelief.

When Lugar came out of the restroom he immediately was sat down and interrogated by the farmer.

"Well tell me why'd you do it." - The farmer said while nudging Lugar's shoulder.

" You go easy on him!" - Snapped his wife.

" I don't, I don't remember. I would never do such a thing." - Lugar was in limbo and his body sore.

" Well, then tell me what you saw. You had to see something, ain't no way you ain't seen nothing. Look at the size of that crop circle, look at all my sheep!" - Insinuated the farmer.

" Now you must have seen something boy, your shirt is all bloody and torn." - His wife backed him this time.

Lugar had said all he could say. He could not acknowledge the mistake because it was something that he did not fully encompass in knowledge. Instead, he just sat on the sofa staring at his own bare feet.

"Speak son!" - Shouted the farmer.

" Now that's enough, the boy must be hungry."- His wife was a very traditional southern woman.

" Hungry, we are not feeding this boy, this boy is going straight to the station!" - The farmer was scared of what he lacked in understanding of the situation.

" He is here now, might as well eat before we drive him down to the station, come on in here." - She insisted.

A plate was fixed and placed in front of him and they followed behind him beginning to eat. Lugar was careful when eating his food. The couple just stared at each other. The wife had a list of questions to ask Lugar. Where did he come from? What was his name? His age and so on. Everyone's thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of their house phone. The farmer went to pick it up.

Upon returning, he said, " that was Mikey Louis. Just told me to be careful, be careful because he thinks there is a bear out here killing our livestock! When in fact it was this alien!" The farmer was rushing towards Lugar.

It was an hour drive down to the station. Undoubtedly, he was accompanied by his wife. She helped get Lugar settled in the back seat, offering him a blanket to cover up; he barely had on any clothes.

" Man I can't wait to see what type of reasoning you come up with for slaughtering all my god darn sheep!" - The farmer laughed hysterically.

He continued," I'm gonna tell 'em as straight as it is. I found a weird boy lying in my field, better yet in a crop circle with the blood of all my dead sheep on his shirt. My sheep and Mikey Louis's sheep."

When they arrived at the sheriff's department the farmer jumped out of his truck missing both steps and flung open the door that separated him and Lugar. All together they marched at his angered pace into the office. Leaving the keys in the ignition to the vehicle.

"Sheriff, sheriff, this him." - Said the farmer.

Lugar was wrapped up in the blanket given to him by the farmer's wife. Standing on the cold police department floor with no sock or shoes. Stains of dirt and blood covering his body.

The sheriff whistled, " well what do we have here? Heard you've had a long night, a rather particular night."

" Tell him about the crop circle." - Said the farmer.

" A crop circle?" - Asked a nearby deputy.

The sheriff whistled again, " mmm mm mm, on a full moon too, yeah we got something going on. You tell Mikey Louis to cancel that bear search. Tell him I said he can leave all those friendly bears alone."

" Well what about my sheep Sheriff somebody has got to pay for that. " - Said the farmer.

" I'll make sure to have you and Mikey Louis resupplied. Now it might not be as good as no sheep but we will keep you fed for time being." - The sheriff said offering him a hand to shake.

" What is going to happen to this child Sheriff? " - Asked the farmer's wife.

" We will see to it that we locate his family and take the proper precautions in handling him. Wouldn't want the Fed's to get involved and come along snooping around our town anyway. I'll give you three calls when I get some answers." - Responded the Sheriff.

The farmer and his wife went back to their vehicle and down the road. He was cussing and fussing the whole ride home. Both of them left puzzled by what power Lugar or extraterrestrial assistance he would of had to have to accomplish such wild doings in one night.

" A crop circle and sheep obliterated on two separate farms, Sheriff, what do you think?" - Asked the deputy.

" Let's let him sit in a cell , give him time to think of his story, then I will go talk to him. Meanwhile, I need you to call around and check on everybody. Ask about anything that happened strangely or out of pocket last night and get the boy some shoes." - Ordered the Sheriff.

It was only two cells that occupied that office in particular that night. Lugar had yet again been placed in confinement. He did not obtain the mental capacity to come up with a solution or even an explanation for the things that he has been apart over the course of the past year. His memory was very vague and he behaved very idiosyncratically, like someone who had post traumatic stress disorder.

Eventually the Sheriff came into the cell and took a knee. Lugar looked him dead in the eye but with a sense of being lost. The sheriff was just as concerned and confused after hearing the news from his deputy.

" You had trespassed and destroyed the property of two farmers and now I have the remains of three doctors and a werewolf hunter on my hands, with my number one suspect being a boy who can't be no older than the third grade." - The Sheriff was sucking his teeth and tapping his knee.

" I just want to go back home." - Said Lugar.

" Then why are you here, why are you here." The sheriff said repetitively. " We gon finish this talk." - He continued.

" A werewolf hunter eh Sheriff?" - Asked the favored deputy.

" Don't worry about it, if that boy is a werewolf, he won't be changing for another twenty nine days. Full moon is never but twenty nine and a half days apart. " - The Sheriff informed his right hand man.
