"Dad!" I ran straight to him, where he sat in the chair, his head hung low.
He looked up at me with his tired eyes, but for a fleeting second, his gaze travelled past me and to the window. His face darkened with sadness, and he instantly brought his gaze back to the ground, unable to lift it up and meet the eyes of the people he had cheated.
Joanna must have sensed that because she rushed to close the curtains though that would not be much useful.
"Dad are you okay? Please talk to me dad." I squatted near him and held his hand in mine.
He gazed up at me and nodded his head. "I am fine! We were waiting for you." His voice was devoid of any emotions. It was as artificial as a robot's.
"Elena, can I have a word with you in private?"
I looked up at Sheriff Bolt. He wore an apologetic expression on his face, but his hands were tied by his duty. Yet he was helping me in every way possible.
"Sure."
